Maybe there is hope for the next generation…
We all constantly hear and read stories on the news and on the web of the horrible things that people do to each other everyday.
The violence in the Superdome, the latest bombings in Iraq, and those poor children that were found in cages in Ohio, are just the kind of things I am talking about. Every time I have think I have seen or heard the worst case of human depravity, something else tops it.
Then I hear stories of people going that extra mile to help people in need, like all the people that have volunteered their time and money to help those people affected by hurricane Katrina and I know that not everyone is as sick and twisted as some of the others that you know that are out there.
Personally, I am putting most of my hope in the next generation of people that are out there to make things better. Hopefully the people that are kids today will see what has happened to our country and learn from the sacrifice that others have given to help their fellow countrymen, strangers or neighbors alike.
When I read stories like the one Rick Fogarty tells about his grandson, I know that my hope isn?t misplaced. I also heard a story about my nephew (Austin, my sister Stacie?s son) the other day that just made me smile.
My nephew will be two years old in November and I hear that the people at the daycare he stays at have come to call him the ?grandpa? of the playground. He is almost ready to move up to the next age group and is somewhat older than the other kids in his current group.
From what I am told Austin watches out of the other kids in his group while they are out on the playground. If one of them falls down, he runs over and helps them up. If they cry from the fall, he puts his arms out and says ?Hug?. If one of the kids loses a shoe, Austin will run to pick it up and give it back to them.
No one asked him to do those things, but I know that he picked up some of that from his parents; they are really good to him. Call me biased, but it looks like they are doing a great job raising Austin, and I am proud of them.
Maybe there is hope for us after all.
