Monitor Duty: Wide-Scale Speculation of the New Post-Crisis

Go over to Captain Comics Message Board here.

Apparently Dan Didio is trying to restore the DCU to his own personal Golden Age…. comic books when he was 12. Circa 1982.

I remember DC Comics of 1982. I can tell you almost exactly what that the DC Universe looked like around 1982. This could be pretty.

There is some pretty wild stuff in that post on Captain Comics. I could go into it, but I am just going to hang tight and see what happens.

Now this is good news. I have been a Lone Ranger fan since I was a kid, when I watched the TV show reruns with my Dad. We need more heroes like that around these days. Thanks again to Monitor Duty for finding this info.

Monitor Duty: The Lone Ranger To Ride Again

The Pulse is reporting that Dynamite Entertainment has obtained the license to bring back the Lone Ranger (and pressumably Tonto) to monthly comics. No info was given concerning a creative team, plot concepts or when the first issue will debut.

Infinite Crisis causing infinite confusion??

If reading issue #2 of “Infinite Crisis” has you saying, “What the hell are they talking about??”, or “Earth -1, Earth-2, huh??”

Newsarama has a pretty good (if you can ignore the commentary) of issues #1 and #2 of Infinite Crisis that can help you figure things our a bit.

Also, as I am sure as it has been covered in numerous other blogs , IC #2 gave a pretty good rundown of the now classic “Crisis on Infinite Earths” from over 20 years ago.

If you were two young to be around to read the first Crisis when it came out, or don’t have the hardvcover or the trade paperback of this series (if you don’t you should its great stuff), you might be a little confused to where all this Earth 1 and 2 stuff came from.

Since I have every issue of the original Crisis (I was about 15 when it came out, so do the math) , I figured I would help some of you to understand what exactly the first Crisis was all about.

How am I going to do this? Well I could write up an account in my own words, tempered with 20 years of (faulty) memories, but that might not help. I thought it would be better to hear it from “the horses mouth” so to speak, so I very tenderly scanned the letters column from my copy of Crisis #1 (pictured below, and autographed by George Perez I might add).

Crisis on Infinite Earths #1

You can read parts one and two of that column written by series writer Marv Wolfman, right here:

Part 1

Crisis #1 Part #1

Part 2

Crisis #1 Column part 2

After reading that column, does it sound familiar? It should to some degree. As was quoted at the DC’S “CRISIS COUNSELING” PANEL at WIZARD WORLD

“Another fan asked if “Infinite Crisis” was going to destroy the current continuity and replace it with a new baseline. DiDio immediately responded that “Infinite Crisis” was “not another baseline attempt.” Rucka emphasized this point, saying that, “We like our continutity.”

One thing DiDio did point out is that as a result of “Infinite Crisis,” the incongruities in continuity since “Crisis on Infinite Earths” would be resolved by the new series. Rucka went further and stated that “Infinite Crisis” was, in fact, a sequel to “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” “in the same sense that ‘The Two Jakes’ is a sequel to ‘Chinatown,’” said Rucka. “

I have already covered some of what Mark Waid was quoted as saying about Infinite Crisis in a Lying in the Gutters column, back in September. My favorite quote from that was ”

?The good news is, and I guarantee you this, when we?re on the other side of the CRISIS, those days are GONE. Just gone. We?re sick to death of heroes who are not heroes, we?re sick to death of darkness. Not that there?s no room, not that Batman should act like Adam West, but that won?t be the overall feeling. After all this stuff, after everything shakes down, we?re done with heroes being dicks. No more we screwed each other and now we must pay the consequences. No, we?re super-heroes and that?s what we do. Batman?s broken. Through no ONE person?s fault, but he?s a dick now. And we?ve been told we can fix that.?

I am so glad to hear that, because Batman has gradually become an ass over the years, and I don’t like it. You can see evidence of it in IC #2 and in the “War Games” storyline before that.

However, I have been reading some things that have me worried were things are going “one year later” after reading a few things on Newsarama:

[Updated] DAN DIDIO ON EVEN MORE DC CHANGES

This week?s edition of Wizard Magazine provided some additions to the ever-growing pool of info regarding the make-up of the DC Universe and its ?One Year Later?/post-Infinite Crisis line-up of titles.

While the DC offices were of course closed Thursday and Friday, Newsarama managed to track down DC?s Dan DiDio on our special 24-hour hotline for five minutes of his time and a few brief comments on some of the new information.

Each title includes the information revealed to this date followed by DiDio?s comments?

# Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner new Blue Beetle ongoing: ?Keith Giffen and screenwriter, John Rogers, are all set to take on a new Blue Beetle monthly starting next spring, and Cully Hamner?s new look for the character is quite amazing. But before the series starts, the scarab pops up in Infinite Crisis #3.

# Bill Willingham Shadowpact ongoing series: ?Bill Willingham will be both writer and artist on this series, as the Shadowpact spins out from Infinite Crisis: Day of Vengeance Special. Bill has been looking for the right project to pencil and I?m glad he picked this one for his return. As for Justiniano, stay tuned, big plans to be soon announced.?

# Geoff Johns & Kurt Busiek on Superman/Action Comics crossover, and a James Robinson written storyline crossing-over Detective Comics and Batman: ?We have planned stories to help re-establish Superman and Batman in the post-Crisis DC Universe. What follows each of these arcs? Let?s save that for another day.?

# Greg Rucka on Supergirl: ?Greg Rucka joins Ian Churchill on Supergirl, ?One Year Later?. What can I say, Greg loves strong women.

# Rucka and Jesus Saiz on Checkmate series: ?What can I say, Greg loves board games. This series spins directly out of, surprise, surprise, Infinite Crisis: OMAC Project Special and Jesus Saiz did a wonderful job designing the new Checkmate. Look for a lot of familiar faces, meta and non-meta, to fill the chessboard.

# New Wonder Woman series illustrated by Terry Dodson: ?More announcements shortly on follow ups to some recently cancelled series.?

# Ron Marz & Greg Tocchini Ion series: Ron did such a great job filling you in, you don?t need me here.

# Anything new that you can add Dan??: ?Two members of the extended Bat-family are seeing some changes as well. Bruce Jones steps in as writer of Nightwing while Adam Beechen and Karl Kerschl take on Robin. As for who is in the costumes ? that?s still open for discussion?

?Whew ? glad you didn?t ask me anything about Aquaman.?

Update 11/28: Newsarama received an email from Dan Didio Friday evening and he wanted to pass along the following…

“Must have been a little sleepy from all the turkey I ate, forgot a few important pieces of information…

“Spinning out from Infinite Crisis: Villains United Special, there will be new secrets and a new six in the Gail Simone/Brad Walker Secret Six mini-series.

“Not sure how things can change One Year Later when the stories are taking place thousands of years in the future, but the future is about to get more exciting in the newly titled Supergirl and the Legion of Superheroes. And no, that is not a typo, wide awake now.

“Lastly, since you asked so nicely, Aquaman becomes Aquaman: Sword of Atlantis with issue #40. But I think that might raise more questions than answers.

“Now back to our regularly scheduled days off.”

Look for more info and creator interviews expanding on this week?s news soon here at Newsarama..

I have to say the things that bother me the most is the Supergirl and Nightwing news. I LOVE the new Legion of Super-Heroes title and they should just leave it alone. Nightwing is so screwed up by Devin Grayson that they should use the Crisis to take things back to the way they were before she showed up somehow. Ultimately there isn’t much I can do about it, except bitch about it here, so we will have to see how it all turns out.

DeLay failed to comply with House requirement

Next thing you see is he wants the charges dissmissed against him.

Thanks to Bill P. for calling in about a major outage at Cogent.
Looks like it affects all of their major peering points:
keynote internet status

Bill did mention a major fiber cut. The Cogent website is not reachable at
this point. Posts to the NANOG list suggest a cut in DC or NY.

Brian Krebs (Washington Post) was able to confirm the dual cut with Cogent. See his blog for details.

more details will be added as they become available.

HEEEEYYY YOU GUYYYSSSSSSS!!

I HAVE to get this when it comes out!!

Amazon.com already has it available for pre-order

Mondo Media: ‘Electric Company’ Set Sees Release

Shout! Factory followed up its initial July announcement of an Electric Company boxed set with an offiical release date and several other details on the contents of the collection.
Available for the first time on home “video,” the DVD release of The Best Of The Electric Company will contain four discs with 20 episodes.

The wildly popular 1970s-era Emmy award-winning children’s television series was created by the non-profit educational organization Children’s Television Workshop (now Sesame Workshop) and featured an ensemble cast with Morgan Freeman, Bill Cosby and Rita Moreno, with voice-overs by Mel Brooks, Gene Wilder, Joan Rivers and Zero Mostel. The Short Circus provided a youth element to the cast, featuring Irene Cara and others. With its roots in the Motown Sound, Broadway and The Carol Burnett Show, The Electric Company became a cultural phenomenon of the ’70s, teaching children basic reading and grammar skills, with an emphasis on fun.

The Best Of The Electric Company DVD set features a wealth of bonus features including new interviews with Moreno, creator Joan Ganz Cooney, executive producer Sam Gibbon, head writer Tom Whedon (“Golden Girls,” “Alice”), and Short Circus member June Angela. Show trivia, new episode introductions by Moreno, classic outtakes, and a fun Karaoke version of “Silent E” round out the discs’ extras.

The box will become available on February 7 for the suggested retail price of $49.98. As with all Sesame Workshop products, proceeds from the sales of the DVDs will help fund their educational projects around the world.

Mondo Media: Stiller to Bust Ghosts?

I could have sworn that I read or heard that this movie was shot down. Hopefully this will be much better than the second movie.

Mondo Media: Stiller to Bust Ghosts?

According to numerous sources, Ghostbusters director Harold Ramis is considering Ben Stiller as a ghostbusting staff addition in his upcoming third installment, Ghostbusters in Hell.

Should Stiller sign on, he will join original cast members Rick Moranis and Dan Akroyd (who is penning the script).

The film is still in its earlier stages, and there’s no word yet on a tentative release date or additional cast additions/reprisals.

Mondo Media: ‘Jumper’ Makes Big Screen Leap

I read this book a long time ago (at least 15 years or so) and really enjoyed it. It will be interesting to see how this translates to the big screen.

David S. Goyer is one busy guy, his name has been turning a lot it seems. He also co-wrote the screenplay for Batman Begins
(and was heavily involved in its production) and was one of the writers that redid the very popular JSA series for DC Comics.

Mondo Media: ‘Jumper’ Makes Big Screen Leap

Steven Gold’s sci fi graphic novel, Jumper, will make its way to the big screen in 2007, according to Variety.

Fight Club writer Jim Uhls will rewrite a script by David S. Goyer (TV’s Threshold) for the story of a teenage boy who discovers unique teleportation abilities. Production will begin in the spring with Doug Liman at the helm as director.

Liman’s previous work includes Swingers, The Bourne Identity, and Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
