The Scoop - Superstars: NASCAR in Comics

    Superstars: NASCAR in Comics

    NASCAR in Comics

Superstars, Scoop, Friday, March 31, 2006

“Miles the Monster,” the heart and soul of the Dover
International Speedway, makes his comic book debut from the creative minds of
Mark Wheatley, Al Gross and Insight Studios. Insight, in conjunction with Dover
International Speedway, will be releasing a limited edition Miles the
    Monster
#1 to NASCAR fans who will be in attendance at the June 2-4
    race.
According to Mark Wheatley, who has taken on and refined the
character, “I am refining the visual design of Miles, since the Miles of
the comic book is now the “official” Miles the Monster upon which all else will
    be based.”
The book, which reached record numbers in the internet presale (500 copies in the first half an hour), tells the story of Miles, builds a large supporting cast, and adds a great personality the Monster. The character of “Miles” is a fun outgrowth of the nickname for the track, “The Monster Mile.”

Wheatley, who has been a huge sports-comics enthusiast, has been very vocal on the marketability of comics at
sporting events. The June 2-4 race will see 140,000+ attendees over the course of the weekend, and if the presale numbers indicate anything, this comics will become the most sought-after book of the year.

“I feel confident in predicting that with no sales outside of the Dover Track, Miles the Monster
#1 will easily break into the top 50 comics sold for June,” said Wheatley. “And after the September race, I will not be surprised to see additional sales that would take it into the top ten.”

The Scoop - Industry News: Overstreet #36 On Sale Next Week

Posted by Chris Mosby on 31st March 2006

I know I will be picking up my copy…

Industry News: Overstreet #36 On Sale Next Week

Overstreet #36 On Sale Next Week

Industry News, Scoop, Friday, March 31, 2006

Wednesday, April 5, 2006 should witness the arrival of The Official
    Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide
#36 in comic book specialty shops.

The Random House edition for traditional bookstores should follow soon after. As has been the tradition for almost a decade, there are two covers, and each of the covers are offered in hard cover and soft cover
    editions.
George Pérez (Infinite Crisis) drew one of his
signature characters, Wonder Woman, in an original composition for the Guide. This crafty blending of Golden Age and modern sensibilities is the second Overstreet cover by Pérez, the first coming just last year on the
bookstore edition of CBPG #35 with a 25th anniversary
recreation of New Teen Titans #1.

The cover was also featured on The Big, Big Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide in the Direct Market.John K. Snyder III (Doctor Mid-Nite, Fashion in Action) illustrated the Thor cover, which features his recreation of Jack Kirby’s cover to Journey Into Mystery #83, the first appearance of the character.

This is the latest in the artist’s series recreating key Silver Age classics from Marvel which have thus far included Fantastic Four #1 (CBPG #31), X-Men #1 (CBPG #33 - bookstore version), Incredible Hulk #1 (CBPG #34 - bookstore version), and Tales of Suspense #39 featuring the first appearance of Iron Man (CBPG #35). Snyder also provided a modern interpretation of All-Star Comics #8 for the cover of CBPG #33.

His bookstore edition covers have also been featured on The Big, Big Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide in the Direct Market on three occasions. This year’s Guide contains new feature articles by comics
historians Will Murray, Michael Kronenberg (Spies, Vixens and Masters of Kung Fu) and Michael Eury (Back Issue), and other new elements as well.

The Scoop - Industry News: Celebrating the Nerd in All of Us

Posted by Chris Mosby on 31st March 2006

    This should be pretty entertaining…

Industry News: Celebrating the Nerd in All of Us

Celebrating the Nerd in All of Us

Industry News, Scoop, Friday, March 31, 2006

TwoMorrows Publishing enters the parody genre with June’s Comic Book
    Nerd
one-shot magazine featured in April’s issue of Previews..
Spoofing their own publications, their competition, and the comics industry in
general, Comic Book Nerd takes a light-hearted look at what makes fanboys
    and fangirls tick.

Creating a humorous alternate universe of the comics
fan press, Pete Von Sholly leaves no corner of the comics industry untouched as
he bring the funny, obscure, and outright weird aspects of fandom to the
forefront with both a deep appreciation and warped respect.

    “I wanted to
make some statements about how I felt about [the state of the industry],” said
Von Sholly, “and also make some loving statements about what I do love about
    comics.”

Featuring parodies of such publications as Wizard, Alter Ego,
    The Comics Journal,
and even Previews, Comic Book Nerd tackles
every issue from variant covers to comic shop gossip to slabbed books with a fun
(if not almost too true) poke.

“I tried to mix things up so that Comic
    Book Nerd
is not a rant nor an attack, but rather a freewheeling,
confetti-filled shotgun blast at fanzines, journalism and comics creators and
collectors. Not aimed to kill but rather to make noise and entertain in a
    satiric way,” said Von Sholly.

    Check out a 16-page preview at www.twomorrows.com.
