While I was in San Diego…
I am down at the Microsoft Management Summit (www.mms2006.com) this week and I found a place I was never expecting…

Unfortunately Superman and Batman weren’t in. I thought I heard a low flying plane while i was taking this, but I couldn’t see anything.
The one sad thing was that Marvin, Wendy, and the Wonder Twins were outside picketing unfair treatment of sidekicks. I tried to take a picture of them, but they sicked Wonder Dog on me. Luckily that dog is about 300 years old in dog years, or he would have caught me.

“Star Trek” franchise set for 2008 revival: report
Fri Apr 21, 2006 3:12 AM ETLOS ANGELES (Reuters) – More than three years after the
last “Star Trek” movie crashed at the box office, the venerable
sci-fi franchise is being revived by the director of the
upcoming “Mission: Impossible” sequel, Daily Variety reported
in its Friday edition.
The as-yet-untitled “Star Trek” feature, the 11th since
1979, is aiming for a fall 2008 release through Paramount
Pictures, the Viacom Inc. unit looking to restore its
box-office luster under new management, the trade paper said.
The project will be directed by J.J. Abrams, whose Tom
Cruise vehicle “Mission: Impossible III” will be released by
Paramount on May 5. Abrams, famed for producing the TV shows
“Alias” and “Lost,” will also help write and produce.
Daily Variety said the action would center on the early
days of “Star Trek” characters James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock,
including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and first
outer-space mission.
The paper described “Star Trek” as Hollywood’s most durable
performer after James Bond, spawning 10 features that have
grossed more than $1 billion and 726 TV episodes from six
series.
The 10th film, “Star Trek: Nemesis,” bombed at the box
office on its December 2002 release, earning just $43 million
in North America. Last year, Viacom-owned broadcast network UPN
pulled the plug on the low-rated series “Star Trek: Enterprise”
following a four-season run.

BLADE
The new Spike TV live action series has made a new foray on to the web, launching a website for one of the “vampire houses” that will be featured on the show.
STARDUST
Creator Neil Gaiman made a post on his blog
saying, “The wall of people-who-have-been-cast in ‘Stardust’ at
Pinewood now includes on it Mr Peter O’Toole, Miss Billie Whitelaw and
Mr Ricky Gervais. It starts shooting on location in Skye next week. I
don’t know if having the multitudinous readers of a blog concentrate on
making sure the weather in Skye is as unseasonably clear, warm and
sunny as possible starting next Wednesday will do any good, but it
couldn’t hurt. (I won’t be there, alas, although Skye is possibly my
favourite place in the world, whatever the weather.)”
SAILOR MOON
According to Moviehotties.com,
the scourge of the streets is looking at sliding into a schoolgirl
skirt and kicking some butt. We now pause for requisite cleanup of any
drool that may have occurred during the reading of this alleged news
item.
X-MEN 3
IGN’s FilmForce has an article
about how filmmakers focused on the Danger Room for this mutant minded
movie. “It was pretty important,” said production designer Ed Verreaux.
“This time, when we went in to the studio, we said ‘We really want to
have this! This is an X-Men thing!’ We changed it a little bit because
we wanted to open it up, otherwise you don’t see as much of the room as
you would have seen. The first set, it was really just sort of ‘a
space.’ Not much room. But now [the actors] are doing a bunch of stuff
and they’re actually all in the space.” (emphasis theirs)
Meanwhile, Zak Penn described the process of writing the film to Comics Foundry.
“Simon and I were hired separately to write two separate ideas. The
studio and the production had all these things that needed to have
done, partly because of availability, partly because of whatever. It
was a whole long list of things that had to be done in this movie. Some
of them were story points, by the way, I will admit that. Me and Simon
(Kinberg) got together and said, ‘Given this, what’s our vision?’ And
we both agreed. ‘That’s what you want to do? That’s what I want to do
too.’ And when Matthew Vaughn came in, we basically all got together
and talked about what we wanted and he said, ‘That sounds great; that’s
what I want to do. If you can show me 30 pages of that by tomorrow, I
won’t quit the movie. But otherwise I don’t think we have time to make
the movie.’ So Simon and I looked at each other, and we’re both
screenwriters in our own right — we’re not writing partners — so we
said let’s try it. We sat down and instead of writing 30 pages, we
wrote 80 pages, and we did it in six days.”
Finally, IGN has been helpful enough to collect all of the trailers for the film in one convenient place. What a swell bunch!
Y: THE LAST MAN
CHUD is reporting
that comics writer Brian K. Vaughan is working on the screenplay for
the adaptation of his Vertigo work. “Yeah, I’m really in the loop. In
fact I would upgrade it from development hell to development limbo,
maybe,” he said. “I am actually writing the screenplay right now for
‘Y: The Last Man;’ they’re letting me take a shot at it. It’s been
really good. The input I’ve gotten so far has been really positive.”
LEGION OF SUPER HEROES
Comics Continuum
notes that April Winchell is providing the voice of President Winema
Wazzo in the upcoming animated series. In the series, President Wazzo
is the mother of Phantom Girl and doesn’t approve of the Legion.
I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS
Here’s where you get in
on the action. Did you see a link we didn’t catch? Have you snuck into
a closed movie set, and have inside data? Maybe your cousin is dating
somebody who knows something, and they had to tell you? Whatever it is,

BOYS IN GREEN: GIBBONS TALKS “GREEN LANTERN CORPS”
by Dave Richards, Staff Writer
Posted: April 14, 2006
This June, when DC Comics ongoing “Green Lantern Corps” series begins, writer Dave Gibbons and artist Patrick Gleason will be jumping ahead “One Year Later” and be taking readers many light years away from Earth and into the farthest corners of the galaxy. CBR News spoke with Gibbons about his plans for the Guardians’ elite force of emerald clad
ring slingers.
“Green Lantern Corps” #1 picks up one year after the events of the “Green Lantern Corps: Recharge
“>Green Lantern Corps: Recharge” mini-series and in the intervening time, life on the Corps home world has changed. “Life on Oa is very different. Oa is very different,” Gibbons told CBR News. “Following the attack by the Spider Guild in ‘Recharge,’ the Guardians realized that just to have a naked little planet floating there in space was maybe a little foolish. So, they’ve taken steps to fortify it. Just how, you’ll see in the first issue and I wouldn’t want to spoil it.”

GHOST RIDER
According to Vancouver 24 Hours,
“Nicolas Cage, Peter Fonda and Sam Elliot were making the fantasy flick
Ghost Rider south of the border, but Vancouver has been chosen as the
location for last-minute reshoots.” By “south of the border,” of
course, they meant “in Australia.” Oh, Canadia … anyhoo, “Ghost
Rider” is scheduled for a February 16, 2007 release.
30 DAYS OF NIGHT
Director David Slade told Zap2It
that filming of the Steve Niles adaptation will probably begin in July.
“There is a degree of responsibility to Ben Templesmith’s artwork,
which will be reflected in the production design, absolutely,” Slade
said. “There were three drafts written before I came to this project,
and I believe that Brian’s draft is the most faithful to Steve Niles’
writing, and Steve has been in the loop.”
300
Warner Brothers has updated the official official website with a new item in the production blog, as well as new concept art.
X-MEN 3
Director Brett Ratner is quoted by USA Today
giving high praise to Ellen Page as Kitty Pryde. “She’s the most
chameleon-like actress I’ve ever met,” Ratner told the publication.
“She’s a shy person, until she wants to become something else.”
“The thing I like about
acting is being able to lose yourself completely in someone else,” Page
said. “I’m not that comfortable when I get recognized.”
Meanwhile, MSN Video has posted a behind-the-scenes look at the production from last December, speaking with actress Famke Janssen, producer Ralph Winter and director Ratner himself.
Finally, the XVerse has the possibly spoilery plot summary of the novelization of the film.
JUSTICE LEAGUE
Comics Continuum
has a boatload of screen captures and quotes from story editor Dwayne
McDuffie about this Saturday’s time travel-centric episode.
SMALLVILLE
Recent episodes made mention of a Project Mercury blog, and those wacky kids at the network went ahead and made it a reality complete with a video clip about the quest for the good professor.
Meanwhile, our pals at Kryptonsite have both the TV Guide and network description of the May 4th episode “Oracle,” as well as high resolution screen captures of next week’s episode, “Mercy.” Finally, rival site Devoted to Smallville has the actual trailer in Windows Media format.
THAT’S A WRAP
