Industry News: DC Returns to the Weekly Format With 52

DC Returns to the Weekly Format With 52

Industry News, Scoop, Friday, April 07, 2006

DC Comics’ 52, set to hit store shelves on May 10, is the company’s
first foray into a weekly comic since they experimented with the weekly release
of Action Comics, which ran from June of 1988 to March of 1989 in issues
#601 – 642. Slated to fill in the gap between this year’s Infinite Crisis
mini-series and the events of “One Year Later,” 52 will bring fans into
the day-to-day world of the DCU.
Although DC attempted to bring fans a
weekly in the past, this is the first relaunch of such an endeavor in over 15
years and they have stacked the deck with some of the best talent in comics
today. This event, which will tell a year-long, in-continuity story, is
unprecedented in the comics industry and incorporates the talents of writers
Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison, Mark Waid, Greg Rucka, Keith Giffen, and many more.
In the aftermath of Infinity Crisis, the DCU must pick up the
pieces of its shattered world, while asking the question that’s on every
characters mind: “Where are Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman?” This question,
along with many others will be answered as many of DC’s second stringers take
center stage to guide fans through the missing “52.”

Oh man, to get a hold of one of these…

Industry News: Action Comics #1 Listed on eBay

Action Comics #1 Listed on eBay

Industry News, Scoop, Friday, April 07, 2006

A restored copy of Action Comics #1 has been posted for auction on
eBay. With the first appearance of Superman, many collectors consider this issue
to be the most important comic book in the hobby. The cover date for the book is
June 1938.

Many forget that the book is actually a great anthology with
quite a few solid back up features. The book opens with the very first Superman
story by Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster. Other features in the title include Tex
Thomson, The Adventures of Marco Polo and Pep Morgan. While the majority
of the features are in color, the book does contain 12 pages of black and white
art.

Superman gets all the attention, but the book also contains a
memorable Zatara story with great pencils by the great Bernard Baily. Magicians
were a very popular subject during the early days of both comic books and
newspaper strips. Zatara lives on into today through the presence of his
daughter, Zatanna. Since her first appearance in the Hawkman #4, she has
become an integral part of the modern DC Universe.

The book has been
graded in an apparent 5.0 VG/FN condition. The restoration is considered to be
moderate. The restoration includes cleaning, pressing and reinforcement.

The book will be listed for seven days, ending on April 12,2006.
Diamond International Gallery is listing the book on consignment. The opening
bid of $25,000 has already been met. You can find the book at www.ebay.com. The item number is
6619929923.

The Scoop – Industry News: Comic Books and Safes

Very interesting news…

Industry News: Comic Books and Safes

Comic Books and Safes

Industry News, Scoop, Friday, April 07, 2006

Scoop has just learned of a recent development in regards to comic
books and storage. The discovery has been made that certain safes may be harmful
to comic books.

Uncle
Scrooge is a conscientious collector who watches over his money bin
with great fervor. If you have or are looking into storage for your
comics or prized collectibles be sure to investigate all the details.

Over a year ago, CGC was contacted by a collector
stating that he had some books with rust growing on the staples of a few comics.
There had been no rust when he last saw the books and he was asked to send them
to CGC for inspection. When the books arrived the staff of CGC was very
surprised to see extremely rusty staples that had not been rusted a few years
prior. After a long investigation and with the help of the collector, CGC
learned that rust could have developed because of the chemical compound used to
make his safe fireproof or fire resistant. But because information was limited,
at that time it was suspected that heavy moisture in the room where the safe was
located contributed to the poor storage conditions for these books, not just the
safe itself, since this had never been heard of before.

Recently a
collector, well-known to CGC, called them to ask about the same problem
affecting a single book. He was told to send his book in so that they could
inspect it. After thinking about it and remembering the safe incident from the
year before, he was asked what type of storage he uses for his comics. His
comics were also stored in a fireproof safe. Coincidently, both reported
incidents involved the same brand of safes. There is strong reason to believe
that any fireproof or fire resistant safe might create a harmful storage
environment for your comics or possibly other collectibles with metal parts.
Also fireproof/fire resistant safes are prone to develop moisture. Many fire
resistant safes contain insulation, which in turn, contains water crystals; thus
the high content of moisture.

If you have a fireproof or resistant safe,
or if you are thinking about buying one, please do as much research as possible
to determine if it can be harmful to non-precious metals.

SPIDER-MAN 3, 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, FANTASTIC FOUR 2, JUSTICE LEAGUE: APRIL 7TH COMIC REEL WRAP

SPIDER-MAN 3

Actor Thomas Hayden Church was interviewed by About.com,
and he said that some of the filming didn’t go the way he expected.
“Despite all of the airs and graces of this being a hugely successful
franchise and action movie and superhero movie,” Church said, “Sam is
ultimately a brilliant actor’s director … He’s very specific and he
pushes really hard, but it’s very rewarding. I shot a scene in January
that was a very emotional scene in the movie for my character. And I
didn’t understand … we shot all the other coverage all day long, and
I was actually starting to get kind of frustrated. I could feel it. I
was starting to get a little irritable. And as they day progressed we
broke for lunch and we hadn’t gotten any coverage on my side. I was
like, ‘Well this is bulls**t man. I’m like working my a** off over here
and Sam doesn’t seem to be in too big of a hurry.’ We continued
building and building, and then we came back from lunch and we kept
building and building. There was a lot of coverage, there was a lot of
lighting changes because there’s a whole kind of thing where a window
blows out and a storm blows in and there’s all these effects that had
to be captured on camera. And I really felt myself becoming more and
more physically aggressive. I kind of snapped at a couple of people –
and I apologized. I felt myself becoming more emotionally aggressive.
He then set two cameras on me and we went for a rehearsal. I slammed
the stunt guy; I grabbed him and I slammed him really hard into the
wall. Sam came over and goes, ‘You’re ready for your close-up.’ He knew
exactly what he was doing. That just gave me goosebumps. … He knew I
was right there and that’s exactly how I had to be in the scene, which
was, you know, super aggressive — almost homicidally aggressive … he
shot the close-up first and then he started backing the camera out and
shooting the rest of the coverage. And really, I went up to him when we
wrapped and I hugged him. I was like, ‘Wow, you taught me so much today
that I really thought I knew, and I didn’t know.’”

Meanwhile, the Daily News
notes that “Crossing Jordan” actor Steve Valentine “is making a
busman’s holiday of this hiatus period — he’s reporting to the
‘Spider-Man 3′ set to play a fashion photographer in the third Spidey
flick to star Tobey Maguire. He wouldn’t have missed it: ‘As a kid, I
was a Spider-Man junkie.’”

Finally, Sneak Peek claims to have spoiled the surprise and know who all three (not two) villains are for the film.

30 DAYS OF NIGHT

According to Comingsoon.net, the Steve Niles adaptation will hit theaters on October 19, 2007, helmed by David Slade (“Hard Candy”).

FANTASTIC FOUR 2

Jessica Alba talked to MTV
about moving on past Victor von Doom. “Dr. Doom is dead, and ‘Fantastic
Four’ invisible woman Jessica Alba is now looking forward to
vanquishing a villain whose identity she’s prohibited from revealing.
What Alba is allowed to reveal about 2007′s ‘F4′ sequel, which begins
filming soon, should nevertheless raise a few geeky eyebrows. ‘We’re
making the right changes,’ Alba said, responding to detractors of the
first flick. ‘It’s gonna be an amped-up version, this next one. It’s
gonna be faster, and it’s gonna be a more intense story line that kind
of references the comic a bit more.’ All the major stars from the first
film are set to return and, Alba said, the heroes might finally get
their famously pimped-out flying vehicle from the comics. ‘Maybe [we'll
have] the Fantastic Car,’ the actress said, ‘which I’m excited about.’”

However, producer Ralph Williams told Comics Continuum
that the script’s not done and that for a certainty the old gang –
including Julian McMahon as Dr. Doom — would be calling it a comeback.

JUSTICE LEAGUE

Speaking of Comics Continuum,
they note that the last two episodes of the series will run on Cartoon
Network May 6th and 13th. The network description of the episodes says,
“In the series conclusion of Justice League Unlimited, the powerful
force behind the world’s villains is revealed as an army of bad guys is
formed. The biggest face-off yet between good and evil causes a
relentless fighting match that takes place on both Earth and in space.
This time around, Superman and the others must enlist all the help they
can get to save the world, even if it means making one of the most
unexpected team-ups in Justice League history.”

X-MEN 3

Hugh Jackman is quoted by IGN’s FilmForce as taking on all the big names in this mutant minded movie, with some mid-level spoilers on what will happen.

SMALLVILLE

Our friends at Kryptonsite have new photos from the April 20th episode, “Mercy.”

SUPERMAN RETURNS

There’s a new behind the scenes photo of a wire-bound, costumed Brandon Routh over at the Superman Homepage.

BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN

Finally, Freeze Dried Movies has the alleged plot for the stillborn Wolfgang Peterson project.

THAT’S A WRAP

Here’s where you get in
on the action. Did you see a link we didn’t catch? Have you snuck into
a closed movie set, and have inside data? Maybe your cousin is dating
somebody who knows something, and they had to tell you? Whatever it is,
we wanna know it all — fire off an email
and let us know whether you want your name used or your contributions
to geekdom to go down anonymously. Broadcasting live from Los Angeles,
this is novelist/karaoke host/all-around lunatic Hannibal Tabu
saying thanks for your time and indulgence, and [tagline sent back to
development hell until something hipper can be dreamed up].

CHRIS CLAREMONT TAKES TIME FOR RECOVERY

Press Release

On March 5, comic industry legend and current writer of
Uncanny X-Men and Excalibur, Chris Claremont, was overcome by
exhaustion while attending a conference in Italy.

Thankfully, he is expected to make a full recovery and return to the comic industry he helped build.

Chris Claremont is best known for being the definitive X-Men writer and
over thirty years later is still writing Uncanny X-Men along with New
Excalibur.

After treatment and tests in Italy, Claremont was diagnosed with
cardiac stress and last week returned to New York City where he will
continue his rehabilitative therapy.

Due to this brief hiatus, Claremont?s newest projects ? his taking over
Exiles and debuting GeNext ? will be pushed back until late in the year
when he returns. Claremont will be coming back to the fold soon, and
Marvel is pleased to announce that he will be a part of this family for
many years to come, as he recently renewed his exclusive contract.

Marvel wishes Claremont a speedy recovery and looks forward to future classic stories from an industry legend.
