WONDER WOMAN, UNDERDOG, FANTASTIC FOUR 2, ZOOM: JUNE 29TH COMIC REEL WRAP
by Hannibal Tabu, Staff Writer
Posted: June 29, 2006
WONDER WOMANAccording to a report at Slice of SciFi, “Evidently Joss and company are in negotiations with actress Priyanka Chopra
to play the lead in his next big blockbuster comic-to-movie project. It
had been thought from the beginning that Morena Baccarin
(‘Firefly’/'Serenity’) would get the nod. Morena, however, has since
signed on to do several guest spots on the hit TV show ‘Stargate: SG-1′
portraying ValaÕs daughter who is really a super-Ori. It is possible
that scheduling conflicts between the two projects have brought all
this about, or it could also mean that Baccarin was just one of many
serious candidates for the famous comic heroine.”
UNDERDOG
Superhero Hype
has a press release from Realscan 3D about their work in bringing the
cartoon favorite to the big screen. “Realscan 3D provided the
production with animation-ready precision digital doubles of the lead
character, ‘Shoeshine,’ Underdog’s alter-ego, and the heads and muzzles
of the cast dogs in the film. Realscan also created a digital double of
the film’s villain, Simon Barsinister, played by Peter Dinklage.”
FANTASTIC FOUR 2
Actress Kerry Washington talked to MTV
about the upcoming sequel. “It probably will be darker,” she said.
“They have handed in two different scripts, and they are trying now to
take the best of both. So we’re not exactly sure yet what it’s going to
look like.” She also discussed a certain major character, whose name
we’ll leave out in case you want to avoid spoilers. “You would think
that the [NAME REDACTED] would be its own movie franchise, because
people really love that character,” Washington said. “I think it’s
really exciting that they’re bringing that to ‘Fantastic Four.’ I think
it’ll be huge.”
ZOOM
Hollywood.com has a first look at the trailer for the Tim Allen superhero vehicle.

lists the first day tally for the movie at $21 million, the eighth
biggest opening on a Wednesday for any film. Finally, there was a very
informative interview with director Bryan Singer on KCRW’s The Treatment available for immediate download, discussing music in particular.
SPIDER-MAN 3
There’s a spoiler-filled blog that speculatively plays connect the dots with the teaser trailer released this week and plot elements in the movie.
SMALLVILLE
Kryptonsite has fresh spoilers about the season opener, with more Kryptonian goodness jammed in.
BLADE
What? You missed the
season premiere last night on Spike TV? Thank goodness for technology
– for one week, iTunes users can download the entire two-hour show for
free. Yes, free. Regular one-hour episodes start next Wednesday. At
presstime, the iTunes Music Store hadn’t been updated to include the
episode in its search function, but it can be found under the link for
TV shows.
YOU’LL NEVER WORK IN THIS TOWN AGAIN!
Here’s where you get in
on the action. Did you see a link we didn’t catch? Have you snuck into
a closed movie set, and have inside data? Maybe your cousin is dating
somebody who knows something, and they had to tell you? Whatever it is,
we wanna know it all — fire off an email
and let us know whether you want your name used or your contributions
to geekdom to go down anonymously. Broadcasting live from Los Angeles,

SUPERMAN RETURNS OPENS TO $21M – NEWSARAMA
I am not sure that the comparison to Spider-Man 2 is a fair comparison. One it was a sequel to a very succesful film that was out only a few years back. Second, gas prices weren’t as high as they are now.

The Movie Blog: Kate Holmes Back For Next Batman. Dies?
I can’t wait!!
http://www.themovieblog.com/archives/2006/06/kate_holmes_back_for_next_batman_dies.html
The guys over at Moviehole
have put up a VERY interesting comment about the upcoming Batman movie revolving
around the poster girl for “Waste of potential” Katie Holmes. Despite the fact
that almost NO ONE on the planet wants her in the next Batman flick, it appears
she will be there… but maybe that’s a GOOD thing! Here’s what he had to say:
Yep, Katie will indeed be reprising her role as Rachel Dawes for
the “Batman” sequel – as brief as her turn may be. Can’t say anymore without
being pummelled by David S.Goyer.
Ok, so this COULD be a good
news/Bad news situation. The bad news is obviously that Holmes will be back in
Batman (If you believe the story that is). However… saying it’ll only be a
small part… that COULD be FANTASTIC news. Think about it… why else have her
in there for a short time unless THEY’RE GOING TO KILL HER OFF!!! Oh man! Can
you imagine the cheers in the movie theaters across North America if that
happens! People want to see a “dark” batman? Imagine how “dark” they can make
him if his girl gets beaten to death by someone (probably the joker… but I’m
just guessing). Man, that would set up an AMAZING hate on between Bats and Joke.
So yeah, by all means bring Katie Holmes back… and then kill her. JOY!

The Movie Blog: Fantastic Four 2 Plot?
Hmmm interesting. Let’s hope Galactus isn’t in a guy in a big rubber suit…
http://www.themovieblog.com/archives/2006/06/fantastic_four_2_plot.html
A couple of places around the web are reporting that the
plot synopsis for Fantastic Four 2 has been
released. I personally can neither confirm nor deny the authenticity of this…
but several other sites out there that I respect are saying it is. So there you
go.
The good folks over at Canmag gives us this outline of
the plot:
Marvel’s first family of superheroes, The Fantastic Four, meets
their greatest challenge yet in Fantastic Four and the Silver Surfer as the
enigmatic, intergalactic herald, The Silver Surfer, comes to Earth to prepare it
for destruction. As the Silver Surfer races around the globe wreaking havoc,
Reed, Sue, Johnny and Ben must unravel the mystery of the Silver Surfer and
confront the surprising return of their mortal enemy, Dr. Doom, before all hope
is lost.
Ok, now let’s just assume for a moment that this is all
legit. To me, that’s a pretty solid sounding basis for the next Fantastic Four
film. Now, we already know what the “secret” of the Silver Surfer is (Galactus),
but seeing a Silver Surfer on screen is going to be pretty damn cool… as long
as they can figure out a way to make sure he doesn’t just look sorta silly on
screen (I mean come on… you have to admit the POTENTIAL for high cheese is
there when the dude is called “The SIlver Surfer” and flies around on a cosmic
surf board).
Also, it looks like the studio heard everyone complaining about the title
“Fantastic Four: The Next Chapter” and have apparently changed the name to
“Fantastic Four and the Silver Surfer”.
Your thoughts?

SUPER-SHOTS: A BEST SHOTS LOOK AT THE BEST OF SUPERMAN

Your Host: Troy BrownfieldS-Day is finally here! After a near two-decade absence from cinema,
Superman returns to the big screen. And to celebrate, members of the
Best Shots team have gotten together to recommend and speak on some of
their favorite Superman tales.Up first, representing Texas, is Corey Henson.
When Troy asked me to write about my favorite Superman story, I had a
hard time figuring out what to write about. Would it be Joe Kelly’s
great “What’s So Funny About Truth, Justice and the American Way?” from Action Comics #775? Alan Moore’s “Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?” send-off to the Silver Age? Or that cool scene in JLA where the electric Blue Superman used his new powers to create an electromagnet and push the moon away from the Earth?

So who HASN’t been attached to the role of Wonder Woman?

It
seems like every actress in Hollywood has been rumored to be attached
to the role of Wonder Woman … which is why we’re now importing
Bollywood actresses to start rumors about.Cinematical brings us the latest Wonder Woman casting rumor — Priyanka Chopra, co-star of the big hit Bollywood movie Krrish. Per the site:
Apparently, Miss Chopra is popularity incarnate in
Bollywood right now, and Whedon thinks her charm might play just as
well in the West. This does some pretty serious damage to browncoat
hopefuls who have been pulling for Morena Baccarin, as Baccarin was
leading the popular rumor races of late. Some thoughts suggest
Baccarin’s newly accepted regular guest role on TV’s Stargate might
have resulted in conflicting schedules, but I have trouble believing
she’d opt for a few TV guest spots over a major motion picture. If
she’s out, it’s most likely because the Powers That Be have rejected
her for some reason. Or possibly even Joss himself …
In the comments section, a reader points out that the rumor comes from the Wonder Woman page on the Internet Movie Database, which he points out is “highly unreliable when it comes to casting for upcoming movies.” So take it for what it’s worth.

The Lone Ranger #1
From: Dynamite Entertainment
Writer: Brett Matthews
Art: John Cassaday, art director and cover artist; Sergio Cariello, interiors
Colorist: Dean WhiteLook around: we might live in the best possible time to be a fan of
“genre” fiction. Comic films dominate the box office. Programs that
trade heavily in science fiction or feature the suggestion thereof draw
plenty of television ratings across many networks. The comics
themselves have begun to garner attention from reputable newspapers and
magazines on a, dare we say it, regular basis. Knowing that such
interest exists, and knowing that all culture exists in waves that
strike, recede, and return, it’s no surprise that certain characters
from the past would get the chance, in this new climate, to ride again.Making a most welcome return in the pages of a sterling new Dynamite series is The Lone Ranger.
It’s actually extremely appropriate that the Ranger is returning in the
wake of the new Superman film, as both characters headlined incredibly
popular radio programs that segued into incredibly popular television
series. In his day, the Lone Ranger was indeed a media titan, running
for nearly 3,000 radio episodes between 1933 and 1954. He and his
trusted companion Tonto also rode the TV airwaves from 1949 to 1957 and
starred in novels, movie serials, and yes, comics. Silent in recent
decades (with rare exceptions like the legendarily ineffective Legend of the Lone Ranger
feature in 1981 [die-hard LOTLR fans, save your mails; I saw it in the
theatre and remain unconvinced] and the weak 2003 Chad Michael Murray
revival attempt on the WB), Lone Ranger and Tonto fans have waited
patiently for a vehicle to do them justice.

Wasting absolutely no time, Fox announced yesterday that it’s keeping Hugh Jackman busy in the wake of X3: The Last Stand:
“20th Century Fox announced at Cinema Expo International that a
Wolverine movie spinned off the ‘X-Men’ film franchise will be ready
for release sometime in 2007, according to The Hollywood Reporter…
The movie plans to delve into Wolverine’s quest to discover more about
his past, which he cannot fully remember. David Benioff (’Troy’) is
working on the script. A director has not been chosen yet, but Jackman
and veteran ‘X-Men’ movie exec Lauren Shuler-Donner are producing.”Ready for release sometime next year? Meeting demand or hoping to cash in before the bubble bursts – You be the judge.
