The Movie Blog: Ian McKellen in Magneto Spinn-Off
This was also forwarded from a reader…
O.K. I am officially pissed at Marvel again. Is Marvel really bound and determined to pump out movies of their characters just to get any amount of money they can?? I certainly will pass on this one if it does come out…
When Ian McKellen comes on screen for the first time in X-Men 3, we
see him 20 years younger through the magic of modern technology. Both he and
Patrick Stewart we given extensive make-up jobs and had digital effects applied
to them to appear much younger… rather than getting other actors to play the
younger versions of themselves.
Since the first sneak peaks of that scene came out, a lot of people have
wondered if they would actually get Ian McKellen back to play Magneto in the
spinn-off prequel. I personally said they’d never do that… but it looks like I
may have been wrong! Well… sorta. The bood folks over at Comicbookmovie
give us this:
Ian McKellen will play Magneto in the X-Men spin-off movie,
according to John Bruno, X-Men: The Last Stand FX supervisor by way of Superhero
Hype. The movie has been touted as a prequel/origin story so it’s likely that
McKellen would portray the mutant at his present age, flashbacking to the past,
rather than as a young man.
This was borne out by comments made by outgoing Marvel Studios exec Avi Arad
who talked with iF Magazine. The Magneto movie, he said, would be “starting with
a younger version. It’s the story of Magneto’s life, and it will span some
years.”
So it’s a little unclear what is being said here. To
me it looks like McKellen will indeed be in the Magneto spinn-off… but that he
won’t play the younger version of himself. This makes sense to me.
Yes, the effects on Xavier and Magneto in the begining of X-Men 3 looked
amazing… but to do that sort of effect through an whole film would be mind
blowingly hard, and VERY VERY expensive. So I still don’t think that’s what will
happen. But it sure would be good to see him in there as himself at his current
age!

The Movie Blog: 4 Villains for Spider-Man 3
This was forwarded to me from a reader..
WHAT?!?!?!?! Is Arad out of his freaking mind??? I agree with this guy, this a very very BAD idea!!
This is the first time I’ve had a negative feeling about a
Spider-Man movie. A few days ago Avi Arad confirmed in an interview that there
were indeed going to be 4 (yes that’s right boys and girls… FOUR) villains in
Spider-Man 3. This is a bad move
in my opinion.
The ones we already know about are Venom, Sandman, and Green Goblin. Arad
said they would probably announce who the fourth bad guy is at Comic Con.
A lot of people think the fourth bad guy will be Lizzard (since we see him in
Spider-Man 2), but personally I don’t think this is a real posibility. Know who
I think it’s going to be?
Ok, keep in mind that I have NOTHING to base this on… this is just pure
speculation on my part… but I THINK WE’RE GOING TO SEE KINGPIN in this
flick.
Ok, back to the 4 baddies = Bad idea thought. If nothing else, the one thing
Batman and Robin gave us is the lesson that you can’t introduce too many new bad
guys in a film at once unless you plan on using them in minor minor roles.
Multiple villains killed Batman… and I fear 4 villains in Spider-Man 3 could
do the same thing. To quote Han Solo… “I’ve gota bad feeling about this”.
Thanks to Lizardfreak for the heads up.
Your thoughts? Good diea? Bad idea? And who do you think the fourth
villain will be?

Review – X-Men: The Last Stand
I went to see the new X-men movie this weekend with my wife, and I have to tell you, I was kind of disappointed.
Now don’t get me wrong, special effects and the action were very good.? Without giving anything away (I hope), my biggest problem was the plot.? I didn’t like how this movie was put together, I think it could have been done a lot better.? In fact it almost pisses me off that they made the movie like they did.
Now I haven’t read any X-Men in years, so for all I know, the comics are just like that now.? Call me ‘old school’ if you want, but if the comics are like the movie, then I am glad I stopped reading them when I did.? If I wanted to watch something that depressing, I would just turn on the news.
I don’t want to talk about the details, its too early after the movie’s release to post spoilers.

REFLECTIONS: TALKING “WONDER WOMAN” WITH ALLAN HEINBERG
by Robert Taylor, Staff Writer

Reflections Volume 2 Number 18Damn you, Allan Heinberg, damn you to heck!
I’m sure it’s his fault that everything he touches turns into something completely irresistible to me.
When it was announced
that he would be writing some book called, of all things, “Young
Avengers” with Jimmy Cheung, I sent Cheung an email pretty much
questioning his sanity at drawing a book called…ugh…”Young Avengers.”
Cheung told me to try
watching Heinberg’s television show “The O.C.”, so I bought the boxed
set and watched all 28 episodes in 3 days, and suddenly couldn’t wait
to see what Heinberg could do for the comic industry. From there I
turned into a crazy television person: you know, that weird guy that
lives next door and is up until 4 a.m. watching DVD boxed sets.
Heinberg wrote “Gilmore Girls” and “Sex and the City?” Suddenly I am
addicted to those shows as well, devouring the boxed sets like fruit
roll ups.
And his work in the
comic medium is just as addictive. “Young Avengers” rightfully got an
Eisner nomination for best new series this year, and deserves all the
heaps of praise and high sales it’s been getting since launching. His
writing of confused teenagers trying to be adults when they may not be
ready is amazing, and got a friend of mine to try comics for the first
time as a result. His follow-up work on books like “JLA” has been just
as captivating.
Just as “Young
Avengers” is winding down, and “The O.C.” and “Gilmore Girls” (both of
which he has left) have gone on summer hiatus, I figured it was the
perfect time to focus on getting over my Heinberg-related addictions.
Then it was announced he was writing a “Wonder Woman” relaunch for DC.
Damn you, Heinberg, damn you to heck.
