Wait, there are gay superheroes and fans?

Wednesday June 14, 2006, 9:16 am

Has it really been five days since the last “lesbian Batwoman” story? My, how time flies.

This morning, the Morris County, N.J., Daily Record chimes in and, thanks to the magic of Wikipedia, concludes that Kate Kane isn’t the first homosexual supehero.

Northstar
and Pied Piper? Both gay, columnist Matt Manochio uncovers. Plus, a
local informant tells him, so is Ultimate Colossus who, in “an
alternate universe,” is dating Northstar, “even though (Colossus) is a straight character in the normal universe.”

And folks say daytime soaps are complicated …

But the best (only?) revelation comes from media-savvy comics fan
Adam McGovern, who has his own theory about all the mainstream
attention being heaped upon Batwoman:

It mostly proves the superpowers of DC
Comics’ marketing team. If you stopped people on the street, 10 out of
10 could tell you that Batwoman’s gay, though maybe one out of 10 could
tell you who Batwoman is.”

Meanwhile, via Crocodile Caucus, comes word that Examiner.com columnist Ken Garcia is shocked — shocked,
I tell you! — to discover the existence of gay comic-book fans: “It
appears that superheroes that are unbelievably good-looking and lead
double lives have taken on cult status in the gay community. Long
before Brokeback Mountain appeared on the horizon, it appears
that there were questions about the private lives of planet-hopping
individuals. People with magical powers who somehow got pushed out of
the mainstream of society apparently hold great appeal to gays.”

Yes, so it appears.

Note: As Joe Palmer points out in the comments, Gay League has an invaluable, up-to-date list of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender comic book characters.

SNAKES IN A COMIC SHOP – DC ADAPTS SNAKES ON A PLANE

It was only a matter of time, wasn’t it? The (perhaps unprecedented) Internet phenomenon known as Snakes On a Plane has infected – or perhaps that’s infested – comic books.

DC has confirmed that in August, they are publishing a two-issue
adaptation of the New Line/Samuel L. Jackson action flick set for
release August 18th, written by Chuck Dixon, penciled by Gordon
Purcell, with covers by J.G. Jones and Jerome Moore.

Here is how DC is describing the two-issue project…

Issue #2 Variant cover by Jerome Moore

You’ve heard the Internet buzz…seen the hair-raising trailer…now
experience the comic of the sensational summer movie Snakes on a Plane,
written by Chuck Dixon (NIGHTWING) with art by Gordon Purcell and
painted covers by J.G. Jones (52) and Jerome K. Moore!
Snakes on a Plane stars Samuel L. Jackson as an FBI agent assigned to
escort a government witness on a flight to Los Angeles. But when a
crimelord sets loose hundreds of deadly snakes during the flight, the
agent must band together with the pilot, frightened crew and passengers
in a desperate attempt to survive and protect his witness!

There are mother$%#@!! Snakes On The mother$%#@!! Plane!

Retailers please note: Each issue will feature two covers; see order form for details.

Issue #1 on sale August 16; issue #2 on sale August 30 (1 & 2 of 2) 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US MATURE READERS

Newsarama
also had a chance to catch up with Dixon and Purcell for a few comments
on being part of the perhaps the most talked and written about movie in
years. We first asked both creators what they originally thought of the
hype and attention surrounding the film, before they got involved in
the comic book adaptation…

”I made an awful lot of fun of this project around April Fool’s Day,”
revealed Dixon. “ Iwas convinced that this flick was a joke. Guess the
joke’s on me. This kind of transparent, naked marketing seemed more
like something that Homer Simpson would go see rather than a real-world
movie. When I found out this was not a hoax I admired the ballsiness of
the filmmakers and marketers in not taking themselves seriously. The
whole thing now is a brilliant parody of how films are promoted.”

”Once in awhile, you gotta love a concept so simple that it can be
summed up in four words,” added Purcell. “And Sam Jackson cast as the
lead writes itself! I love that the movie creators were flexible enough
to incorporate some of the online fandom’s contributions into the film
- this is one baby with a lot of godfathers!”

As to why the hype surrounding the film has taken on such a life of its
own, Dixon believes it’s due to the sophistication of movie audiences
today, which he considers greater than what they get credited for in
Hollywood.

“They ‘get’ it and are already celebrating the flick for its puncturing
of show biz clichés and the concept of synergy that we’re assaulted
with every time a new movie opens,” said Dixon. “It’s a brilliant move
to make us all not only a part of the movie but a part of the run-up as
well. If the stories are true about Samuel L. Jackson insisting that
the movie retain its working title then the man is more of a genius
than even I previously thought. And I’m a major fan of the guy.”

Purcell has his own take…

”People don’t like being herded into planes and flung into the air in
the first place – but traveling with screaming babies or drunk
businessmen is one thing – poisonous snakes is another! It combines two
of America’s biggest fears. Spreading the word on this movie is part of
the fun – much like Blair Witch and the JibJab boys, it’s fun to be part of something early on!

Speaking of the story, the writer charged with adapting it to the comic book page is a fan…

”It’s a great popcorn, thrill ride movie that will exceed
expectations,” said Dixon. “It’s fast moving and fun. A good time at
the multi-plex. It begs you to have lowered expectations so it can
easily vault over them.”

Dixon called the process of writing it for the comic book page “It’s pretty cut and dried”

”The screenplay is clear and concise,” he said. “There’s the usual
telescoping and compressing to get it all in seamlessly. But it’s
working out well so far.”

He described the #1 priority of his job to “to try and match the breakneck pacing of the film.”

”My job is to re-tell (along with Gordon) it in a series of static
pictures. The dialogue’s all here. The action’s mapped out. We just
have to make a comic book out of it. And, if you don’t know what you’re
doing, that’s not so easy to do. But me and Mr. Purcell are good at
what we do.”

“I’ve done some previous movie adaptations (two Star Trek films, Barb Wire) along with a lot of licensed stuff (X-Files, Xena, Lost In Space),
and I approach these gigs as giving fans snapshots of the film,” added
Purcell about his process and priorities. “You can’t include every
frame of the movie in 44 pages, but you can hit the highlights and tell
the story that works as a comic and as a film adaptation.

“I want readers to know this is Snakes on a Plane, not
just any action film. Most fans like getting to see the stars drawn
like the actual actors at their best, and not generic comic characters.
I promise they’ll get plenty of Sam Jackson in this one!”

As to parting thoughts from the creators?

”Clear the runways, kids – Sam Jackson’s got snake @$$ to kick – and Chuck Dixon and I are providing the boots!” said Purcell

Said Dixon, “See the movie. Wear the t-shirt. Download the screensaver. Buy five copies of the comic book!”

TRANSFORMERS, SPIDER-MAN 3, LEGION OF SUPER HEROES, TEEN TITANS: JUNE 14TH COMIC REEL WRAP

by Hannibal Tabu, Staff Writer

Posted: June 14, 2006

TRANSFORMERS

Superhero Hype has another set report from the filming of the Michael Bay-helmed adaptation, complete with photos of the car chase being filmed.

SPIDER-MAN 3

Superhero Hype also has a tidbit from a scooper who heard actor Thomas Haden Church on a radio show giving a minor spoiler about what a certain character would look like. They also have a set report with photos of ol’ Web Head in action.

LEGION OF SUPER HEROES

According to Comics Continuum,
“Star Trek: The Next Generation” actor Wil Wheaton will be voicing the
character Cosmic Boy in the Kids WB series. They also report that Mekt
Ranzz, Lightning Lad’s brother will appear, and that new characters
will be mixed in with old Legion villains.

TEEN TITANS

The aforementioned page at Comics Continuum also has screen captures from the teaser for the direct-to-DVD animated feature.

SUPERMAN RETURNS

Actor Kevin Spacey was quoted at Sci Fi Wire
talking about reuniting with people he’d worked with before, saying
director Bryan Singer “had obviously more money and more tools at his
disposal and more toys to play with, but he’s the same guy he was 10
years ago. And for us it was a great joy, because it wasn’t just Bryan
and me, but his cinematographer, costume designer, the editor and
composer, so it felt like the family was coming back together again.”

Meanwhile, a new TV spot aired during the NBA Finals, and you can take a look at it here, as well as checking out a clip of actor Brandon Routh being interviewed on E! News Live with even more footage from the film.

Finally, Superhero Hype has a possible description of the new trailer, scheduled to hit theaters on June 23rd attached to the film “Click.”

YOU’LL NEVER WORK IN THIS TOWN AGAIN!

Here’s where you get in
on the action. Did you see a link we didn’t catch? Have you snuck into
a closed movie set, and have inside data? Maybe your cousin is dating
somebody who knows something, and they had to tell you? Whatever it is,
we wanna know it all — fire off an email
and let us know whether you want your name used or your contributions
to geekdom to go down anonymously. Broadcasting live from Los Angeles,
this is novelist/karaoke host/all-around lunatic Hannibal Tabu
saying thanks for your time and indulgence, and [tagline sent back to
development hell until something hipper can be dreamed up].

NEWSARAMA.COM: SHANE DAVIS ON MYSTERY IN SPACE

June 14, 2006 by Chris Mosby · Leave a Comment

This looks interesting.  DC is really going out of their way to revive older characters, I think that is pretty cool, but it is putting a dent into my wallet.

NEWSARAMA.COM: SHANE DAVIS ON MYSTERY IN SPACE

SHANE DAVIS ON MYSTERY IN SPACE

by Jon Hook

Announced in Philadelphia, DC is bringing back a classic title this November, with the launch of Mystery in Space, an eight issue miniseries written by Jim Starlin and illustrated by Shane Davis – and Starlin.

Breaking it down,
each issue will feature two stories, the lead story, by Starlin and
Davis, will feature a new Captain Comet…or just “Comet,” maybe, and
will be a detective story set in the far reaches of the DCU, while the
second story will feature The Weird, a character Starlin created in
1988 at DC.

Both
stories have their heroes individually and in their own way battling a
corporate church that goes by the name of “the Eternal Light
Corporation” for the first seven issues, with the two joining forces in
issue #8.

We spoke with Davis to get some insight on the cosmic nature of the miniseries.

The Movie Blog: Superman Circa 1998 Movie Project Concept Art

Somebody lock up Tim Burton before he ruins anymore superheroes ok?

Superman Circa 1998 Movie Project Concept Art

Superman Circa 1998 Movie Project Concept Art

Superman-ConceptSome of the concept art for the 1998 incarnation of Tim Burton’s Superman project has surfaced on the web… and man all I can say is THANK WHATEVER GODS YOU WORSHIP THAT THIS THING NEVER GOT MADE!!!!!!!

Seriously folks, the images and storyboards over on this site
look absolutely ridiculous. How on earth DC or any WB executives
allowed this thing to progress as far as it did it totally beyond me.
This sucks!

To put this all in context, after looking at the images, make sure you go back to listen to Kevin Smith talk
about that whole era and how this movie almost came to be. After
looking at the images, and after re-listening to Kevin Smith’s
hilarious story… get down on your knees and once again thank whatever
gods you worship for Bryan Singer!

Oh man… Burton should be shot for even considering this crap. Thanks to Joel for the heads up.
