Dave Gibbons talks about this weeks launch of Green Lantern Corps
June 14, 2006IN BRIGHTEST DAY: DAVE GIBBONS Q+A
The writer behind ‘Green Lantern Corps’ talks about recharging Guy Gardner.
Most superheroes become crimefighters out of a sense of obligation
and the desire to be a do-gooder. The characters in GREEN LANTERN CORPS
fight intergalactic villains because they were recruited to the cause,
much like Dave Gibbons was recruited to re-establish the GREEN LANTERN
CORPS in the DC Universe.Following up on last year’s GREEN LANTERN CORPS: RECHARGE
mini-series, Gibbons launches the ongoing GREEN LANTERN CORPS this week
from DC Comics. We braved through darkest night to get his thoughts on
the further adventures of the corps. How did you first become involved with the GREEN LANTERN CORPS miniseries and then the ongoing?
GIBBONS: Dan DiDio approached me a few years ago in a convention in
San Francisco and asked me if I’d like to do the GREEN LANTERN CORPS,
write and draw it. I was very flattered and pleased because the GREEN
LANTERN CORPS has always been a favorite concept of mine and some of
the very first things I did for DC were GREEN LANTERN CORPS back-ups in
the main GREEN LANTERN title so I jumped to it.Read the rest here.

FANTASTIC FOUR 2, ASTERIX, CONAN, GREEN LANTERN: JUNE 15TH COMIC REEL WRAP – Comic Book Resources
JACK BLACK as GREEN LANTERN??? ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGHHH Hey wait a minute, he would make a good Guy Gardner…
John Cusack as Harvey Dent? That could work. Pee Wee Herman as the Joker?? Not sure if he has the acting chops. Robin Williams or Mark Hamil would be wayyyyy better.

FANTASTIC FOUR 2, ASTERIX, CONAN, GREEN LANTERN: JUNE 15TH COMIC REEL WRAP
by Hannibal Tabu, Staff Writer
Posted: June 15, 2006
FANTASTIC FOUR 2A scooper wrote in to Superhero Hype
about work on the sequel to the Marvel adaptation. “I was just at a
church creative arts conference, and I saw Ralph Winter speak (the
Executive Producer of the ‘X-Men’ and ‘Fantastic 4′ movies). There he
said that he had already rejected two ‘Fantastic 4 2′ scripts and that
the third script was almost finished and he hoped to have it on his
desk by tomorrow (Thursday). He did say that the ‘07 release date is
still expected.”
ASTERIX
According to Variety,
the Czech firm SPI, Intl. has secured the rights for the movie “Asterix
at the Olympic Games” for central European territories.CONAN
Variety also reported that Boaz Yakin
will write and possibly direct a reboot “Conan the Barbarian” film,
with an early 2007 start on production, and being produced by by Irving
Azoff, Jon Jashni, Richard Alexander and Akiva Goldsman.GREEN LANTERN
Apparently, actor Jack Black was interviewed on the radio in Portland, and said he was still in negotiations to play a servant of Oa, and was waiting on a script.
ULTRA
There’s a new “failed pilot” review over at Televisionary, talking about the former CBS project. Thanks to Danielle Maris for the heads up.
SUPERMAN RETURNS
The studio has set up a
new interactive promotional campaign for fans to show themselves
wearing the Superman logo over on the movie’s MySpace page. The studio statement reads, “In a most unique interactive campaign, Superman supporters are visiting the MySpace page at http://www.myspace.com/supermanreturns
where they can upload their favorite photos of themselves with the
Superman ‘S’ symbol. In its first day nearly 10,000 fans have posted
their photos!”
Meanwhile, Bryan Singer told IF Magazine
about choosing the Man of Steel over Marvel’s merry mutants. “[It was]
‘Sophie’s Choice,’” he said. “I developed the ['X-MEN'] scripts from
the beginning and I’m part of that process and I co-write the stories,
so there was never a material issue. It was literally an issue of me
very much wanting to do [SUPERMAN]. Part of the reason that I got
involved in ‘X-MEN,’ which was a universe that I was not familiar with
was inspired by my love of ‘SUPERMAN.’ So everyday, we had a five hour
bootleg version of Richard Donner’s ‘SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE’ that we would
watch everyday on the set of ‘X-MEN’ in the trailer.”
Also, actress Kate Bosworth originally refused the Lois Lane part, according to Star Pulse.
“”When I met with Bryan,” she said, “I was really freaked out because I
had never been in anything so big. I didn’t know if I’d be completely
giving up my privacy. I sat down with him and I said, ‘I think you’re
going to make an amazing film, and I’m such a huge fan of yours, but I
don’t really feel like I’m ready for something of this magnitude, so
good luck and thank you very much. I appreciate your time.’”
Finally, Comics Continuum
has quotes from screenwriters Dan Harris and Michael Dougherty about
paying tribute to what has gone before, complete with a production
still reminiscent of “Action Comics” #1.SPIDER-MAN 3
According to another scooper at Superhero Hype,
the production will be south of Broome Street on Broadway in New York
from 6 AM to midnight, so all fans in that area can mob the set and
report back anything they see!
Ain’t It Cool News claims that a new trailer might be attached to prints of “Superman Returns.”
BATMAN BEGINS 2
Batman-On-Film
has new rumors about casting for Harvey Dent and the Joker, claiming
that actor/director John Cusack is up for the role of the doomed
district attorney, while cable channel G4 ran a crawl across the screen
saying former Pee Wee Herman actor Paul Reubens would become the Clown
Prince of Crime.WORDS FAIL ME …
Here’s where you get in
on the action. Did you see a link we didn’t catch? Have you snuck into
a closed movie set, and have inside data? Maybe your cousin is dating
somebody who knows something, and they had to tell you? Whatever it is,
we wanna know it all — fire off an email
and let us know whether you want your name used or your contributions
to geekdom to go down anonymously. Broadcasting live from Los Angeles,
this is novelist/karaoke host/all-around lunatic Hannibal Tabu saying thanks for your time and indulgence, you’ve got fresh comics reviews
today, the movie “Dorm Daze 2″ is actually pretty funny (saw a
screening last night at DGA) and [tagline sent back to development hell
until something hipper can be dreamed up].

The Movie Blog: Conan Continues On
Not sure what to think about this one…
http://www.themovieblog.com/archives/2006/06/conan_continues_on.html
Doug won’t be happy with this news at all. It looks liike everything
is still moving ahead for the newest Conan film… however they’re just heading
in a different direction now. A VERY different direction.
Variety
gives us this:
Looking to re-establish Conan as more than a chat host, Warner
Bros. has set Boaz YakinBoaz Yakin to write and potentially direct “Conan the
Barbarian,” a new take on the Robert E. Howard-created character.
Yakin’s concept is more faithful to the Howard story than were the two Dino
De Laurentiis-produced “Conan” films that starred Arnold SchwarzeneggerArnold
Schwarzenegger as the sword-wielding conqueror.WB has tried diligently to revive Conan and got close twice. “The Matrix”"The
Matrix” directors Larry and Andy WachowskiAndy Wachowski circled, and then
Robert RodriguezRobert Rodriguez emerged, but hiring the latter became
problematic after he quit the Directors Guild of America so he could co-helm
“Sin City” with Frank Miller.
That’s a REAL shame about
losing the Wachowski script and Rodriguez. What’s even worse is that they
decided that Boaz Yakin is the guy to write and direct the next one. What else
has Boaz Yakin done? Well lets put it this way… he wrote Dirty Dancing: Havana
Nights and directed Uptown Girls. DO we really need to say anything more?
Although to be fair he didn’t do a bad job directing Remember the Titans. This
just feels bad to me. Can’t wait to hear what Doug has to say about this.

I was wondering if anyone else noticed this…

Man of Steel, Son of Man — take your pick
Wednesday June 14, 2006, 6:00 am
With all the speculation about the Man of Steel’s sexuality, the media almost forgot about that whole Superman-as-Jesus angle. Almost. Luckily, The Associated Press is there for us.
”It
is so on the nose that anyone who has not caught on that Superman is a
Christ figure, you think, ‘Who else could it be referring to?’” our
favorite pop theologist, Steve Skelton, tells The AP. Skelton is the
author of The Gospel According to the World’s Greatest Superhero.Previews for Superman Returns have
done little to discourage such comparisons. One poster shows Superman,
striking a godlike pose, as he surveys Earth from above. And, as The AP
article observes, a trailer for the film “shows the hero with his eyes
closed as the voice of his father — Marlon Brando’s, courtesy of 1978’s
Superman — tells him he was sent to Earth because humans ‘lack
the light to show the way. … For this reason,’ continues the voice, ‘I
have sent them you, my only son.’”Subtle, huh?
But not everyone is buying it. Amy Pedersen, who’s writing her
doctoral thesis at UCLA on comic books, calls the comparison “a
misrecognition,” noting that Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster were inspired
by the story of Moses and the golem of Jewish folklore.
