Introducing ComicBase Express!
I got this e-mail today, and all I can say is it is about time!! I have bought version 8 and 9 of this software, and it works great, but I can’t just keep shelling out $150+ every year for upgrades. Now this I can handle. Besides, its really cool to have 125,000 covers that come out with the Archive Edition, but who really needs that many?

NEWSARAMA.COM – PEEK: LONE RANGER #1 COVER
SWEET!!
NEWSARAMA.COM: PEEK: LONE RANGER #1 COVER
PEEK: LONE RANGER #1 COVER
Dynamite
Entertainment has provided Newsarama with an advance look at the cover
to September’s Lone Ranger #1 by John Cassaday.
Written by Brett Matthews, illustrated by Sergio Cariello, with
art direction by John Cassaday and colors by Dead White, the new
ongoing series will, according to Matthews, examine the Lone Ranger’s
origin in its first arc – something that is clearly indicated by
the cover image.From Newsarama’s earlier
interview with Matthews:“I’m going to incorporate
a great deal of the character’s mythology, but the unique thing
about The Lone Ranger is that despite how popular and recognizable
a figure he is, a lot of people don’t know what exactly that mythology
is. Significant ideas and events that make the character really
important have dipped below the radar or fallen out of the common
telling of the legend — for instance, the mask the Ranger wears
is made from the cloth of his slain brother’s vest, and its eyeholes
were made by the bullet holes that took his life.“That’s a canonical
element of the original origin story I find insanely cool, but many
casual fans don’t know. There’s stuff that’s darker and more challenging
than the powder blue suited image that has become iconic, but which
is no less ‘correct’ for lack of a better word.
![]()
“In short, you will
see most of the classic elements –including some you may not be
aware are — as many of them as I can work in without forcing them
there. My goal is to have these make sense and mean something within
the bounds of the tale being told and the world it unfolds in. It
will very much be an origin story.“There will be a bit
of flashback, but the heart of the story unfolds as it happens,
present day. To ground you very specifically, the first page shows
six Rangers riding into a canyon. We’re with John Reid there and
from that point on. It’s his story as much if not more than that
of the legend he will become, in as much as you can separate the
two.”Interior preview
pages are due to be released next week. And – according to sources
at Dynamite, Lone Ranger will be something unique at the
publisher – it will feature a “lone cover,” that is, each issue
will have only one cover – by Cassaday.

What’s Interlac for ‘Run this by legal’?

At The Legion Omnicom, Michael points out an interesting change in press-release language for the upcoming Legion of Super Heroes cartoon, presumably in response to the ongoing legal squabble over the rights to Superboy.
In the original press materials,
announcing the Kids’ WB fall lineup, the character with the “S” and
spit curl was referred to as “the young Superboy”: “… While their
intentions were good, their time travel skills were not, and Lightning
Lad, Saturn Girl, Brainiac 5, Phantom Girl, Bouncing Boy and Timber
Wolf end up going too far back into the past, accidentally retrieving the young Superboy instead” (emphasis added). But in the current press release, quoted by The Legion Omnicom, the
character is “the young Superman, before he moved to Metropolis”: “…
While their intentions were good, their time travel skills were not,
and Lightning Lad, Saturn Girl, Brainiac 5, Phantom Girl, Bouncing Boy
and Timber Wolf end up going too far back into the past, accidentally retrieving the young Superman, before he moved to Metropolis” (emphasis added, again). There had been a lot of discussion on message boards about how the
lawsuit might affect the animated series. It looks as if “young
Superman” may be Warner Bros.’ solution.

IIT’S NOT EASY BEING GREEN – AJ LIEBERMAN ON “MARTIAN MANHUNTER”
by George A. Tramountanas, Staff Writer
Posted: June 23, 2006
He’s the lone survivor from another planet, who found himself suddenly
jettisoned to earth. Not only that, but he has special abilities and
powers that set him apart from the average human. Oh, and he also wears
a cape.
Sounds like I’m talking about Superman, doesn’t it?
I’m talking about DC Comics’
Martian Manhunter (aka J’onn J’onzz) though, and this summer, writer AJ
Lieberman is hoping to help make the big green guy a bit more
distinguishable from that fellow with the “S” on his chest. First,
Lieberman is contributing a Martian Manhunter story to DC’s “Brave New
World,” a $1.00, 80-page one-shot arriving in stores on June 28. This
will then lead into an eight-issue limited series that begins in August
with Al Barrionuevo on covers and pencils.
CBR News contacted
Lieberman, who was happy to talk about both projects. We began by
discussing that last time Martian Manhunter was seen by readers…

ZACH SNYDER TO DIRECT WATCHMEN FOR WARNERS – NEWSARAMA

ZACH SNYDER TO DIRECT WATCHMEN FOR WARNERS – NEWSARAMA
ZACH SNYDER TO DIRECT WATCHMEN FOR WARNERS
It’s a story that clearly seems to be a challenge to adapt to film, but now, according to The Hollywood Reproter,
that’s what director Zach Snyder’s job is, as the young director was
named by Warner Bros. as the helmer of the movie version of the Alan
Moore/Dave Gibbons classic graphic novel.Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin are producing with Alex Tse writing a
script based on the comic. According to the trade, Warner Bros.
executives were impressed with Snyder’s handling of the adaptation for
film of Frank Miller’s 300, and that landed him the job.If Snyder stays on the project (and given that the film version of Watchmen
has seen Terry Gilliam, Darren Aronofsky, Paul Greengrass and
screenwriter David Hayter, as well as three studios attached at one
time or another, that’s a realistic statement, not a sarcastic one),
he’ll have his hands full from the word go – as the press will surely
chase Moore down for quotes about his dislike of adaptations of his
works, as well as cutting what is arguably one of the more complex
examples of comic literature into a two hour film that has commercial
appeal.

Industry News: Original-Owner Collection Found In Garage
Original-Owner Collection Found In Garage
Industry News, Scoop, Friday, June 23, 2006
A spectacular collection of over 11,000 Golden Age comic books from a wide
variety of genres has been discovered in the garage of a 19th century
house just outside New York City. The original-owner comics collection has the
greatest range and depth of any such collection to have been discovered during
the past three decades. Now the entire collection is headed to the auction
block, to be offered to the comic collecting public with no reserves. The comic books, the great majority of them unread, were bought off the
newsstand by a previously unknown collector named Davis Crippen. He started at
age eight, but his collection really picked up steam a year later, in 1939.
Inspired by a family friend’s collection of Big Little books, Davis decided that
from then on he would buy and keep every single new comic book as it came out.
