ADVANCE REVIEW: THE LONE RANGER #1

Advance Review by Troy Brownfield

The Lone Ranger #1
From: Dynamite Entertainment
Writer: Brett Matthews
Art: John Cassaday, art director and cover artist; Sergio Cariello, interiors
Colorist: Dean White

Look around: we might live in the best possible time to be a fan of
“genre” fiction. Comic films dominate the box office. Programs that
trade heavily in science fiction or feature the suggestion thereof draw
plenty of television ratings across many networks. The comics
themselves have begun to garner attention from reputable newspapers and
magazines on a, dare we say it, regular basis. Knowing that such
interest exists, and knowing that all culture exists in waves that
strike, recede, and return, it’s no surprise that certain characters
from the past would get the chance, in this new climate, to ride again.

Making a most welcome return in the pages of a sterling new Dynamite series is The Lone Ranger.
It’s actually extremely appropriate that the Ranger is returning in the
wake of the new Superman film, as both characters headlined incredibly
popular radio programs that segued into incredibly popular television
series. In his day, the Lone Ranger was indeed a media titan, running
for nearly 3,000 radio episodes between 1933 and 1954. He and his
trusted companion Tonto also rode the TV airwaves from 1949 to 1957 and
starred in novels, movie serials, and yes, comics. Silent in recent
decades (with rare exceptions like the legendarily ineffective Legend of the Lone Ranger
feature in 1981 [die-hard LOTLR fans, save your mails; I saw it in the
theatre and remain unconvinced] and the weak 2003 Chad Michael Murray
revival attempt on the WB), Lone Ranger and Tonto fans have waited
patiently for a vehicle to do them justice.

I’m The Best At What I Do. And What I Do Is Head Up A Franchise Expansion. Bub.

Wasting absolutely no time, Fox announced yesterday that it’s keeping Hugh Jackman busy in the wake of X3: The Last Stand:

“20th Century Fox announced at Cinema Expo International that a
Wolverine movie spinned off the ‘X-Men’ film franchise will be ready
for release sometime in 2007, according to The Hollywood Reporter…
The movie plans to delve into Wolverine’s quest to discover more about
his past, which he cannot fully remember. David Benioff (’Troy’) is
working on the script. A director has not been chosen yet, but Jackman
and veteran ‘X-Men’ movie exec Lauren Shuler-Donner are producing.”

Ready for release sometime next year? Meeting demand or hoping to cash in before the bubble bursts – You be the judge.
