WONDER WOMAN, UNDERDOG, FANTASTIC FOUR 2, ZOOM: JUNE 29TH COMIC REEL WRAP

WONDER WOMAN

According to a report at Slice of SciFi, “Evidently Joss and company are in negotiations with actress Priyanka Chopra
to play the lead in his next big blockbuster comic-to-movie project. It
had been thought from the beginning that Morena Baccarin
(‘Firefly’/'Serenity’) would get the nod. Morena, however, has since
signed on to do several guest spots on the hit TV show ‘Stargate: SG-1′
portraying ValaÕs daughter who is really a super-Ori. It is possible
that scheduling conflicts between the two projects have brought all
this about, or it could also mean that Baccarin was just one of many
serious candidates for the famous comic heroine.”

UNDERDOG

Superhero Hype
has a press release from Realscan 3D about their work in bringing the
cartoon favorite to the big screen. “Realscan 3D provided the
production with animation-ready precision digital doubles of the lead
character, ‘Shoeshine,’ Underdog’s alter-ego, and the heads and muzzles
of the cast dogs in the film. Realscan also created a digital double of
the film’s villain, Simon Barsinister, played by Peter Dinklage.”

FANTASTIC FOUR 2

Actress Kerry Washington talked to MTV
about the upcoming sequel. “It probably will be darker,” she said.
“They have handed in two different scripts, and they are trying now to
take the best of both. So we’re not exactly sure yet what it’s going to
look like.” She also discussed a certain major character, whose name
we’ll leave out in case you want to avoid spoilers. “You would think
that the [NAME REDACTED] would be its own movie franchise, because
people really love that character,” Washington said. “I think it’s
really exciting that they’re bringing that to ‘Fantastic Four.’ I think
it’ll be huge.”

ZOOM

Hollywood.com has a first look at the trailer for the Tim Allen superhero vehicle.

SUPERMAN RETURNS

We’ve got a fresh review of the film in IMAX 3D, as well as a poll gauging fan response to the Brandon Routh-fueled adventure. As well, ShowbizData
lists the first day tally for the movie at $21 million, the eighth
biggest opening on a Wednesday for any film. Finally, there was a very
informative interview with director Bryan Singer on KCRW’s The Treatment available for immediate download, discussing music in particular.

SPIDER-MAN 3

There’s a spoiler-filled blog that speculatively plays connect the dots with the teaser trailer released this week and plot elements in the movie.

SMALLVILLE

Kryptonsite has fresh spoilers about the season opener, with more Kryptonian goodness jammed in.

BLADE

What? You missed the
season premiere last night on Spike TV? Thank goodness for technology
– for one week, iTunes users can download the entire two-hour show for
free. Yes, free. Regular one-hour episodes start next Wednesday. At
presstime, the iTunes Music Store hadn’t been updated to include the
episode in its search function, but it can be found under the link for
TV shows.

YOU’LL NEVER WORK IN THIS TOWN AGAIN!

Here’s where you get in
on the action. Did you see a link we didn’t catch? Have you snuck into
a closed movie set, and have inside data? Maybe your cousin is dating
somebody who knows something, and they had to tell you? Whatever it is,
we wanna know it all — fire off an email
and let us know whether you want your name used or your contributions
to geekdom to go down anonymously. Broadcasting live from Los Angeles,
this is novelist/karaoke host/all-around lunatic Hannibal Tabu saying thanks for your time and indulgence, check for fresh comics reviews, and [tagline sent back to development hell until something hipper can be dreamed up].

I am not sure that the comparison to Spider-Man 2 is a fair comparison. One it was a sequel to a very succesful film that was out only a few years back.  Second, gas prices weren’t as high as they are now.

SUPERMAN RETURNS OPENS TO $21M

Box office estimates for Superman Returns
Wednesday opening (including Tuesday evening showings that began after
10pm) are in and the Bryan Singer film took in an $21 million, making
it the 8th largest Wednesday opening ever, according to www.boxofficeguru.com.

For comparisons sake, Spider-Man 2, which also opened the Wednesday before the Fourth of July weekend two year ago, debuted to $40.4 million.

What affect the unusually long holiday weekend period (which many people taking Monday and Tuesday off from work) may have on up-front demand for the film will remain to be seen.
