Unkown Golden Age Pedigree Debuts
Industry News, Scoop, Friday, July 14, 2006
Scoop has just learned of a comic book pedigree, which has been kept
a secret. For over 13 years, Brian Peets the owner of A-1 Comics has kept a lid
on one of the best collections he had ever been lucky enough to come across.
Until recently, he didn’t have a name for the collection, but he certainly had a
good story about how he bought it. “I was given the number of a motel in Grass
Valley, and immediately placed a call to the individual’s room at the motel.
After a short conversation in which I verified the type and quality of the
books, I made the one hour drive to Grass Valley from my location in Sacramento.
Finding the motel was easy, but seeing the books for the first time was
breathtaking,” said Peets.Upon arriving Brian wasn’t prepared for what he witnessed. Before him,
spread out over the entire bed, where Golden Age comics with the whitest pages
he had ever seen and included titles like Four Color, Batman,
Superman, Tarzan, Tip Top Comics, Famous
Funnies, and many more. Each comic exhibited amazing color and
freshness.Brian purchased the comics and then did something that most people in his
situation don’t do; he kept them. He knew he had something special, and realized
that he may never see another collection like it again. Now, after 13 years and
one agonizing decision later, the newly pedigreed Central Valley Collection is
making its public debut on the website, www.comicpedigrees.com.
Samples of the collection will be available for viewing at the A-1 Comics booth
this next week at Comic-Con International: San Diego.Nearly every comic from the pedigree is being certified by CGC. “When I
went out to see the collection, it blew away all of my expectations. After
working at CGC and grading almost a million books, and owning some of the best
books in the world prior to CGC, I have never seen some of these issues in any
grade, let alone in these high grades. The page quality of these books rivals,
if not blows away the quality of the Mile Highs and San Francisco’s, said Steve
Borock President and Primary Grader of CGC.“This collection represent a tough time period during the Golden Age of
comics. When this collection finally hits the market, it will give seasoned
collectors who have been looking forever for these scarce comics an opportunity
to finally obtain high grade examples of books they thought they never could,”
said Borock.Comic Book Pedigrees (CBP), is a new website dedicated to all things
pedigree, has the entire collection listed on its site, including large scans of
every book prior to it being CGC encapsulated. Matt Nelson, CBP president and
owner of Classics Incorporated, is delighted to introduce the Central Valley
pedigree to everyone. “This is a great springboard for what I hope will become
the epicenter for pedigreed comics. Brian’s collection is fantastic not only
because of the quality, but because it was kept intact, and its transition into
the market will be completely documented through both CGC and the CBP website.
It’s a trend that I hope continues in the future,” said Nelson.“We plan on expanding the website considerably over the next two years to
include a database of all existing pedigreed comics. Many of these books
represent the best of what exists in our hobby, and they should be documented.
We’ve got many of the original lists, so it’s simply a matter of connecting the
dots.”CBP will continue to provide breaking news on pedigreed collections, as
well as offer pedigree comics for sale, and updates on the forthcoming book on
pedigrees that will cover the greatest comic collections from the 1930s to the
1950s.For more information visit: www.comicpedigrees.com.

GETTING COSMIC WITH JIM STARLIN II: MYSTERY IN SPACE
by Byron S. Dane
Yesterday, we spoke with Jim Starlin about one of his upcoming cosmic projects, the Kid Kosmos Kidnapped graphic novel coming from Dynamite Entertainment. Today, we hit the legendary creator up with some questions about Mystery in Space, the eight-issue, September-launching miniseries starring Captain Comet and the Weird, and illustrated by Shane Davis.
Newsarama: Turning our attention to another corner of the galaxy, what can you share about Mystery in Space, your new project for DC?
Jim Starlin: Well, to start off with Mystery in Space was supposed to feature Adam Strange. But because of events taking place in DC’s 52
series, just before I was set to start writing the series we discovered
we couldn’t use Adam. Captain Comet and the Weird were enlisted to be
his replacements.I was ready to walk off the project right then and there. But my
girlfriend urged me to take a walk down the beach and think it over. I
did so and started to realize what an opportunity this really was. DC
wanted me to jazz up Captain Comet and do whatever I felt like with the
Weird. So I disassembled the Adam Strange story and converted it into
the joined-at-the-hips Comet and Weird tales.Once this was done I found I had a much better story than the Adam Strange tale had been.

The sixth video journal from the production is now online at Moviefone, while Comingsoon.net claims that the MPAA has rated the film R (for graphic battle sequences throughout, some sexuality and nudity).
LIGHTSPEED
Stan “The Man” Lee is
still at it, with his new live action superhero story debuting on the
Sci Fi Channel July 26 @ 9pm ET/PT, according to a press release posted
at Superhero Hype.
The film is produced by FWE Picture Company, Jeff Franklin (“Stuart
Little”), Elie Cohen, directed by Don E. FauntLeRoy, written by Steve
Latshaw and John Gray, the cast of stars include Jason Connery,
(“Wishmaster 3: Beyond the Gates of Hell,” Dominic Senatori on
“Smallville,” and son of Sean Connery), Daniel Goddard (“Beastmaster”),
“Baywatch’s” Nicole Eggert, and “The Six Million Dollar Man,” Lee
Majors.
FANTASTIC FOUR 2
Writer Don Payne is quoted at Sci Fi Wire
confirming some details about Galen and Norrin’s Excellent Adventure.
“That’s the worst-kept secret in town,” Payne said. “The Silver Surfer
will be in it. The Fantasticar will be in it. We’re just trying to make
it more exciting and funnier, and, you know, we’re trying to top the
first one. I think people know the characters now. They know the tone a
little bit better. Origin stories are always hard to get off the
ground, and we’re going to be up and running. I think the one thing I
really want to do is make Reed Richards, that character, smarter and
tougher. He’s the leader. I think Ioan did a great job [in the first
film], but I think he could have had more stuff to play as the leader.
Reed Richards has his nerdy side, but he ultimately has to make some
tough choices.”
AMAZING SCREW-ON HEAD
We got an email from
Stephen Gerdling pointing out the new commercial that’s been airing on
Sci Fi Network, now available for web viewing at Kung Fu Rodeo.

Comingsoon.net also notes that the Nicolas Cage vehicle has been rated PG-13 (for horror violence and disturbing images).
