NBC’s Heroes Debut Along with Web Comic

Mondo Media, Scoop, Friday, September 29, 2006

This past week, NBC debuted their latest hit television property,
Heroes, as well as announced that they will be releasing a weekly online
comic tie-in to coincide with each new episode. Heroes combines comic
book action with government conspiracy and apocalyptic visions to create a world
where flight, rapid regeneration and teleportation are a part of natural
evolution.

Tapping into the comic industry’s pool of talent, including
Michael Turner, Jim Lee, Tim Sale, Aron Coleite and Jeph Loeb, who is also the
co-executive producer, the tie-in web comics fill in the gaps between episodes
and shed some light into the characters taking center stage in the show. The
first “webisode” details Mohinder Suresh search into the death of
his father, taking fans from his childhood experiences with his father to his
migration to New York City.

“We’re going to do one a week to
correspond to the episodes,” Coleite told News-a-Rama. “Michael
Turner and Aspen are doing the first four. Jim Lee and Wildstorm are doing the
second four. And if we can tear Tim Sale away from all of the great work he’s
doing on the series, maybe he’ll do one or two. We’ve been so lucky to work with
these amazing artists.”

Interested readers can check out
information on the show, as well as read current webisodes by visiting www.nbc.com/Heroes.

ROBERT DOWNEY JR. CAST AS TONY STARK – NEWSARAMA

ROBERT DOWNEY JR. CAST AS TONY STARK – NEWSARAMA

ROBERT DOWNEY JR. CAST AS TONY STARK

And we’ve got a Tony Stark.

The news broke last night, and hit the trades this morning – Robert
Downey Jr. will play Tony Stark/Iron Man in the upcoming film version
of the Marvel comic series.

At his MySpace Iron Man Movie Group, director Jon Favreau wrote as the news was breaking:

“It is true. Robert Downey Jr. is Tony Stark. I am about as excited as
I can be. I saw what he can do and he is extremely enthusiastic about
playing Stark. I can say with absolute certainty that there is no
better choice. The humor and emotional dimension he brings truly raises
the bar on this project. Get ready.”

As reported previously, the film will be the first feature to be
produced independently by Marvel Entertainment and distributed by
Paramount. As The Hollywood Reporter describes the plot:

Downey will portray Tony Stark, a billionaire industrialist and
genius inventor who is kidnapped and forced to build a devastating
weapon. Using his intelligence and ingenuity, Stark instead builds a
high-tech suit of armor and escapes captivity. Upon his return to the
U.S., he uncovers a plot with global implications and must don his
armor and protect the world.

The screenplay is written by Art Marcum & Matt Holloway and Mark
Fergus & Hawk Ostby. Filming is slated to begin in February, and
the movie is scheduled for a May 2, 2008 opening.

Marvel’s press release for the casting reads:

Academy Award(R) Nominee Robert Downey Jr. will take on the role of one
of Marvel’s greatest Super Heroes, signing on as the title character
for Marvel Studios’ highly-anticipated IRON MAN. This project, the
first feature film to be produced independently by Marvel
Entertainment, will launch into theaters May 2, 2008. The film is being
directed by Jon Favreau and will be distributed by Paramount Pictures.

Downey is widely recognized as one of Hollywood’s most versatile
actors. Nominated for an Oscar(R) for his extraordinary portrayal of
Charlie Chaplin in Chaplin, Downey has been featured in more than 50
films. His upcoming credits include Fur (co-starring Nicole Kidman), A
Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, and the David Fincher film Zodiac. He
has also recently been seen in such films as: A Scanner Darkly, The
Shaggy Dog, Good Night, and Good Luck, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Gothika,
The Singing Detective and Wonder Boys.

Based upon Marvel’s iconic Super Hero, IRON MAN tells the story of
Tony Stark, a billionaire industrialist and genius inventor who is
kidnapped and forced to build a devastating weapon. Instead, using his
intelligence and ingenuity, Tony builds a high-tech suit of armor and
escapes captivity. Upon his return to America, Tony must come to terms
with his past. When he uncovers a nefarious plot with global
implications, he dons his powerful armor and vows to protect the world
as Iron Man.

“Robert Downey Jr. is one of the most talented and acclaimed
actors of this generation. His versatility sets him apart and makes him
an ideal fit to play such a complex character as Iron Man. We could not
think of another actor better suited to bring one of Marvel’s crown
jewels to the big screen and be the centerpiece of our first
independently produced feature,” said Kevin Feige, President of
Production, Marvel Studios.

Marvel Studios is currently casting all supporting roles. Filming is slated to begin in Los Angeles in February 2007.

IRON MAN will be produced by Mr. Feige and Avi Arad. Executive
Producers are Michael Helfant, Ari Arad, Mr. Favreau, Louis D’Esposito
and Peter Billingsley. Mr. Downey is represented by CAA.

Well this should be interesting…

CNN.com – Robert Downey Jr.: I am ‘Iron Man’ – Sep 29, 2006

Robert Downey Jr.: I am ‘Iron Man’

LOS ANGELES, California
(Hollywood Reporter) — Robert Downey, Jr. is suiting up to star in
“Iron Man,” a superhero movie based on the Marvel Comics character.

Jon Favreau is directing the Paramount Pictures release. Filming is slated to begin in February in Los Angeles.

Downey
will portray Tony Stark, a billionaire industrialist and genius
inventor who is kidnapped and forced to build a devastating weapon.
Using his intelligence and ingenuity, Stark instead builds a high-tech
suit of armor and escapes captivity. Upon his return to the U.S., he
uncovers a plot with global implications and must don his armor and
protect the world.

The comic debuted in the 1960s, and Iron Man’s
origin involved Stark being a prisoner of the Viet Cong. The movie
version will be set in today’s geopolitical climate.

Budgeted at
more than $100 million, it marks the first feature film to be produced
independently by Marvel Entertainment, which previously licensed its
characters, such as “Spider-Man” and “X-Men,” to other studios.

Marvel president of production Kevin Feige said the filmmakers looked for the best actor to embody the character.

“The
Marvel characters are not just about how high they jump or how fast
they fly, they’re about their character flaws,” Feige said. “They’re
about their inner demons. They’re about the struggles that they go
through between being a man and being a hero.”

Downey, who has
battled his fair share of inner demons, worked hard to get the role,
getting in shape and even growing a goatee like the one Stark sports in
the comic books.

“In every casting announcement we’ve done,
people in their mind’s eye have their own view of it and let us know
about it. We’re used to it,” Feige said. “The point is, we looked at
everybody, and we found the best person for the role. It’s as confident
a casting move as we’ve ever done. The proof will be in the pudding,
but he is Tony Stark.”

Downey returns to theaters on November 10 in the Diane Arbus bipic “Fur” opposite Nicole Kidman.

OCCULT CRIMES TASKFORCE, SPIDER-MAN 3, 300, INVINCIBLE: SEPTEMBER 27TH COMIC REEL WRAP

OCCULT CRIMES TASKFORCEVariety is reporting
(subscription required) that Dimension Films has acquired movie rights
to “O.C.T.: Occult Crimes Taskforce,” an Image Comics series that
launched in July. Creator Rosario Dawson will produce as well as star
in the film.
SPIDER-MAN 3

Reader Bruce Kitun wrote in to note that a trailer playing on On Demand in Queens, NY has an interesting spoiler for the film (stop reading now if you don’t wanna know).
He writes, “I happened to read the description of the movie and was
surprised to read something along the lines of: “After working with a
specimen from the moon, Peter Parker realizes his new costume has a
life of its own…’” Interesting.

300

Frank Miller sat down for a chat
with Comics2FIlm, where he talked about bringing another project to the
silver screen. “It’s really hard to tell,” Miller said about what was
most satisfying to see translated. “The darker part of me would be when
they start to push the dead soldiers on the immortals. It’s so
perfectly realized, but the combat stuff is pretty stunning. There are
hundreds of images that I just looked at and, if I have to pick an
ultimate favorite it’s the shot of the boy stabbing the spear and
seeing the shadow of the wolf with the spear going through his mouth.
That was one of my favorite panels that I drew and he captured it to
perfection.”

INVINCIBLE

Right here at CBR,
creator Robert Kirkman noted a movie version of his teen hero is in
development. “I’ve turned in the first draft of the screenplay and
people seem to like it. Other than that, nothing to report.” Thanks to
Mike Dano for reminding us of that one.

30 DAYS OF NIGHT

Ghost House Pictures has posted a seventh behind the scenes clip from the Steve Niles adaptation, this time discussing having “Hard Candy” editor Art Jones on board.

HEROES

According to the Hollywood Reporter, “Melrose Place” veteran Rena Sofer has landed a recurring role on the NBC superhuman drama, playing the wife of an aspiring politician.

IRON MAN

Director Jon Favreau was interviewed on KCRW, and audio versions are available in multiple formats.

HELLBOY

There’s an article at IESB which has some looks at the animated Hellboy and discusses the differences in the depiction.

SMALLVILLE

MSN has an inside look at the series, while Kryptonsite has a new promotional gallery showing Aaron Ashmore as Jimmy Olsen. Nice sweater vest. Meanwhile, Devoted to Smallville has captured a new promotional banner ad for the show (and “Supernatural”), as well as an MP3 of a radio ad for the season premiere.

SMALLVILLEKryptonsite has both guest star spoilers and the official network description of this season’s third episode, “Wither.” They also have galleries of promotional imagery featuring Michael Rosenbaum and Kristin Kreuk. Meanwhile, Devoted to Smallville has a scan of FHM’s Fall TV Special, focusing on the show.

Hollywood North Report has an interesting casting rumor claiming that the rapper Bow Wow is listed on call sheets playing a “dual character” in the episode “Reunion.”

PEACH GIRL

According to Toon Zone,
“at Anime Weekend Atlanta, Funimation announced the acquisition of
anime series Peach Girl. The anime series is based off of the long
running manga.”

ALIEN VS. PREDATOR 2

There’s a report in Variety
(subscription required) noting that Reiko Aylesworth and Steven
Pasquale have been cast as the leads in 20th Century Fox’s “Alien vs.
Predator 2,” which begins filming next week in Vancouver. Greg and
Colin Strause direct from a script by “Armageddon” writer Shane
Salerno. Davis Entertainment’s John Davis and Robbie Brenner are
producing.

ASTERIX

This page from New Zealand features info on the new live action film as well as a photo of Clovis Cornillac, the new man in the helmet.

TRANSFORMERS

Screenwriter John Rogers talked to Newsarama
about what he’s been able to learn about the Michael Bay-helmed
production. “Yep, I wrote the first draft,” Rogers said. “I’ve seen the
shooting script, and it’s about half and half. They’ve moved one of the
storylines a little earlier, and they’ve increased the big military
aspect, whereas I had focused on some of the smaller, personal stories.
Yeah, you know, I get a credit, we’ll see. We’ll see what it looks like
eventually. It goes from me, to the other guys, who work quite
extensively with Michael Bay, so using what he needs to get his vision
across. The characters are the same, the rough plot’s the same, and
I’ve seen the mock-ups of the battles and it’s gonna be frickin’ huge.
It’ll be a lot of fun to see.”

SUPERMAN RETURNS 2

Director Bryan Singer has no problems building big expectations for what’s next in Metropolis, according to quotes at Today Online.
“When you do a first film like ‘X-Men,’ for example, you’re introducing
a world and a set of characters. Once those characters are introduced,
once we’ve lived with them for awhile and we know them, when you get
into a second film like an ‘Empire Strikes Back’ or a ‘Wrath of Khan,’
you can make an action-adventure film and you don’t have to bank all
that time getting to know the characters. Now you can raise the stakes,
raise the jeopardy and make a leaner, meaner movie.”

FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER

According to the Hollywood Reporter,
20th Century Fox has chosen Peter Jackson’s Academy Award-winning
visual effects house Weta Digital to oversee the upcoming film. Noted
character actor Doug Jones will provide performance and movement
references for Weta, in a process similar to the way Andy Serkis
portrayed Gollum in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. The voice casting
of Silver Surfer has yet to be determined. Weta has developed an
advanced computer-generated animation process that employs
motion-capture techniques updated to add further dimensionality to the
liquid-metal hero.

THE BATMAN

Comics Continuum has an interview
with producer Michael Goguen who talked about some developments
expected in the fourth season. “Robin is hugely important to the
series, just as he is to the entire Batman mythos, in that he helps to
humanize Batman, and give him an ally and partner that truly
understands his motivation, being the only person close to Batman that
shares the same tragic circumstance in his origin story. Robin is in
every story this season, and we’ll get to see him being trained and
growing into a stronger and stronger crimefighter and an integral part
of what is becoming a deeply connected ‘Bat Family.’”

The Continuum also has a rundown of episode titles and synopses.

THE CASTING COUCH

Here’s where you
get in on the action. Did you see a link we didn’t catch? Have you
snuck into a closed movie set, and have inside data? Maybe your cousin
is dating somebody who knows something, and they had to tell you?
Whatever it is, we wanna know it all — fire off an email

MARVEL, CRYPTIC, MICROSOFT TEAM FOR MARVEL MMO – NEWSARAMA

September 28, 2006 by Chris Mosby · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Comic Book News, Marvel Comics, Tech Stuff

Ok, now this surprised me. Not sure that it makes much sense though…

MARVEL, CRYPTIC, MICROSOFT TEAM FOR MARVEL MMO – NEWSARAMA

MARVEL, CRYPTIC, MICROSOFT TEAM FOR MARVEL MMO

The last time anyone put the words “Marvel” and “Cryptic” together in a new article was…well, the two parties announced that they had settled all litigation related to the suit Marvel filed against Crytpic Studios in relation to the game City of Heroes.
Throughout the battle between Marvel and Crytpic, there were fans who
suggested that the comic publisher and game studio needed to put their
differences aside, and focus on creating a kickass massively
multiplayer online game, a la CoH but set in the Marvel Universe, and using Marvel characters.Fans who suggested that are getting the last laugh today, as it was
announced at X06 that Cryptic will join Marvel and Microsoft Game
Studios (their partnership was announced last summer) in developing a
Marvel Universe MMO for both the Xbox 360 and Windows platform, and
will allow seamless play for players on either system.

“For us, this is a very exciting announcement for multiple reasons –
one of the first is that the Marvel Intellectual Property is
universally recognizable,” Frank Pape, Senior Director of Business
Development, Microsoft Game Studios told Newsarama. “We believe that it
transcends the boundaries that currently exist on cross-platform on the
two different audiences that you seem to find on both platforms. We
believe that this can transcend that, and bring a new, fresh experience
to the players on the MMO space on console, and Cryptic is our first
choice, and the best choice we could have possible made to develop this
game. We’re very lucky to have had them sign on to develop the game.
They’ve had a great track record in delivering MMOs such as City of Heroes and City of Villains – both highly rated and highly successful games; as well as having games developed in a very timely fashion.”

While the parties declined to discuss how former legal sparring
partners turned into business partners (“We call it water under the
bridge,” Pape said), it was suggested that Marvel and Microsoft were
pursuing Cryptic.

“There has been a very vibrant discussion with trying to get Cryptic to
sign on as the developer, and both Marvel and Microsoft were very
interested in having them become our partner, and that’s been going on
for many months,” Pape said. “The deal was signed a couple of months
back, and now we’re ready to announce it to the world so everybody
knows what they can expect to see out of the Marvel MMO. It’s been
going on for a while – these things take time, but it’s time very well
spent.”

According
to Ames Kirshen, Vice President of Interactive, Marvel Entertainment,
the Marvel characters are the perfect choice to make the jump between
the platforms. “The Marvel IP is the perfect IP to break the stereotype
of MMOs,” Kirshen told Newsarama. “They’re primarily fantasy based and
have been primarily on the PC – almost completely on the PC. The Marvel
IP is the perfect IP to break that mold, bring it to the console, and
have it be a very different experience than the MMOs that are on the
market right now.

“That being said, we’re still developing it simultaneously for both
platforms, and it’s up to the wizardry and magic of the guys at Cryptic
to have it appeal to both audiences, and I can’t imagine a developer
who’s better equipped to do that than Cryptic is.”

Jack Emmert, Creative Director, Cryptic Studios: “We’re committed to
making sure that we capture the Marvel experience, and you can ask
comic writers like Mark Waid, Ed Brubaker and Brian Bendis about my
knowledge of Marvel, and they will attest to it, because we’ve met and
talked over the years – as well as my passion of the Marvel properties.

“One of my frustrations of the past, although certainly not recently is
that superhero games are not really that linked to the Marvel Universe.
It doesn’t feel like it – although that’s obviously changed with games
like Ultimate Spider-Man
which is just so awesome, because it felt just like the comic. So what
I’m focusing on as Creative Director is making sure we capture what is
it like to open up a Marvel Comic today? Every Wednesday I go to the
store. I read about 90 titles a month, and I am on a crusade to make
sure to make sure that the game represents the mainstream Marvel
Universe. Not the Ultimate Universe, not the Supremeiverse, but earth
616 with the Avengers, Fantastic Four, Spider-Man that we’ve known and
loved for decades.”

Not only will the game be set on Earth-616, Emmert stressed that the MMO will reflect current – and changing – continuity.

“This is where Ames and all of Marvel has been great. I have carte
blanche to be able to be part of the discussions of what’s going on at
Marvel, not just now, but in two years, to make sure that the game
properly reflects the IP when it’s released. It’s terrific to talk
about ideas that we can have events in the game that reflect events
that are going on in the Marvel Universe. A great example of something
like that is Civil War – when thing like Civil War happen, the game will reflect that, and Marvel’s been terrific about that.”

Although,
Kirshen pointed out, the Marvel MMO won’t strictly adhere to what’s
going on in the comics, as with any MMO, the players end up dictating
the story, he said, and the Marvel MMO will be no different.

The decision to stick to the current continuity in the Marvel Universe
was rooted in the idea of making the game as accessible to as wide an
audience as possible, Pape explained.

“When we sat down and all talked and thought about what slice of Marvel
we were looking to create or go after, I think to go back and make
things based in history, and making the player have to do ‘homework’ so
to speak to get up to speed in regards to what the world is that we’re
creating just didn’t make sense. It’s a lot easier for the player now
to pick up a comic book at a comic shop or bookstore, or go to
Marvel.com and get a snapshot feel of what the Marvel Universe is like
today, and then just jump into the MMO game and understand what they’re
doing.”

And while the game will be accessible to newbies to the Marvel
Universe, Emmert said that he wasn’t about to let all his arcane and
obscure Marvel knowledge go to waste. “There will be plenty of Easter
Eggs, and for the people who really know Marvel, and I consider myself
one of them, there will be plenty of hints and suggestions of
Marvel’s…even ancient history. But, at the same time, the game has to
be accessible to somebody who can just pick up a comic book today.
That’s the goal.”

Asked if the Marvel MMO will be a similar flavor to City of Heroes and City of Villains, Emmert said that the assumption that the game will be just like CoH with a Marvel overlay isn’t quite true.

“With City of Heroes, we really had a very different goal
in mind than we do with this particular game,” Emmert said. “Certainly,
with the technology, we’re doing the next rev on it. The fact that all
of our servers were up and running – we didn’t have queues, we didn’t
have crashes – those are the important things. That experience
will be the same. But in terms of what the player does, the sky’s the
limit, and we’re not thinking inside of any box right now. We’re
definitely going to expand gameplay and change it and make this game
its own.”

As for the most fundamental possible similarity – players creating
their own characters, none of the principles would confirm or deny that
players will be able to assume the identities of existing heroes or
create their own. Although, who would own characters that were created
by players, Emmert, Pape, and Kirshen declined to comment.

What Emmert would confirm is that the game will be set in New York City
– something that will make it fundamentally Marvel, he said.

Pape stressed that the gameplay between platforms will be seamless,
allowing players playing on PC to interact with players on the Xbox
360, something that, when combined with the Marvel characters, will
have a serious impact on the MMO market.

“Cryptic’s technology is robust and proven, the Marvel IP is
universally recognized, and the Microsoft strength is Xbox Live and our
publishing ability,” Pape said. “That’s what makes it unique, and what
will bring in millions of users when the game releases. Frankly, this
is going to be something fresh, instantly recognizable, very broad
based in its appeal, very intriguing, and paired with the right
developer to make sure that you can play seamlessly and that you have a
killer experience.”

Kirshen: “From the Marvel perspective, this is a big reason why we went
with Microsoft as opposed to another game publisher. What they bring to
the table in terms of making this game accessible to the masses, both
on the Xbox 360 and everything they’re doing there, in addition to the
tens of millions of people running Windows and what they’ll be able to
do on Vista, and have the two operating systems talking to each other.

“Plus, MMOs are a completely different animal – to publisher for them
is not like getting a game on the shelf and walking away. These things
are living, breathing entities that require constant updating and
logistical resources. Not every publisher has the infrastructure to
support this kind of game. Obviously, with Microsoft being the platform
owner on the two platforms we’re going out on, in addition to our face
and where Microsoft is going with the 360 and ht XBox brand in general
were the key factors for us to not be platform agnostic as we have been
in the past by going with third parties.”

As is usual with announcements of development teamings, the three
declined to even give a guesstimate for a release date of the Marvel
Universe MMO, with Pape saying, “When the game is ready and ready to
grab the world and invite it to come in and play, then we’ll release
it.”

What a great issue!  I can’t wait to see more of John’s work on this title.

GEOFF JOHNS – GREEN LANTERN, OA, PRIME, & MORE – NEWSARAMA

GEOFF JOHNS – GREEN LANTERN, OA, PRIME, & MORE

With Green Lantern #13,
Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis wrapped up “Revenge of the Green Lanterns,”
an arc which saw the (assumed) dead return to active duty, the Cyborg
Superman come back to major threat-level status, Hal Jordan (and Guy
Gardner) disobey the Guardians, the Manhunters be taken off the board
(hopefully), and an update on what’s been going on with Superboy Prime
since he was jailed at the end of Infinite Crisis

Sound like a lot? Well, yeah – it kinda was. We sat down with Green Lantern writer Geoff Johns to get the nitty gritty of issue #13, as well as what’s to come in the next arc, “Wanted: Hal Jordan.”

Newsarama: Geoff, let’s start with the big reveal of Green Lantern #13
- aside from the return of the Lanterns thought to be dead – the last
page, showing that we’ve not seen the last of Superboy Prime. To the
Guardians, he represents what? A danger that only they know about and
thus, can handle?

Geoff Johns: Yeah – he’s a huge danger, and the Guardians have a
perspective on it that nobody else will have that will be revealed down
the line, but he’s a massive, massive threat, and the key power
player that’s going to play into some stuff that’s coming up as well.
And of course, it ties into the whole of 52 and everything
else. There are still a lot of major revelations for the DC Universe
that are going to happen in Green Lantern, with the Guardians of the
Universe already being aware of a lot of things that the readers aren’t
– and so are a few other characters, like Cyborg Superman who knows
something.

So yeah – Superboy Prime is going to play a role in some upcoming storylines. He’s a dangerous, dangerous guy.

NRAMA: A question that has to go with him being so dangerous – why’s he naked?

GJ: Well – he was shirtless when we left him there, but more
than that, it’s a subtle thing – he’s looking at his belt, and he’s
contemplating who and what he is. You’ve got to remember, with this
appearance, he’s been there for over a year. And you can see when they
post Guy Gardner as one of the guards – they’re still treating him as a
high level threat. The guards aren’t allowed to leave their post for a
month.

For us, him being naked was an acknowledgement of stripping himself
down to being this kid again, and being completely absorbed in what
he’s done, and what he’s going to do.

NRAMA: If we had to lay money on it, what’s the safer bet – that
Superboy Prime could redeem himself, or he’s a member of Bad Guys
4-ever?

GJ: I think it’s a split. You saw his reaction when he did what he did in Infinite Crisis,
but at that same time, he’s walked over that line. Does he think he can
walk back? Should he? Does this universe even matter to him anymore? Is
it the fact that, now that he’s got a big dent on his car, another one
won’t matter? If he’s already on that path, is he going to continue on
it, or is he going to really try and work and go back?

It’s
a tough thing, but of course, the parallel is Hal Jordan, which is why
he works so well in that book. It’s no mistake or coincidence why
Superboy Prime is going to be dealt with in Green Lantern quite a bit.

NRAMA: He’s not a direct mirror to Hal Jordan, but rather…

GJ: He has some echoes of Hal. Also, the Guardians of the Universe
bring the cosmic element into it, and tie into the overall DCU
mythology that we’re going to be unveiling. He’s a central figure to
everything. Emotionally and thematically, he’s going to give us a lot
of story. He’s not somebody that you want to completely throw away. And
he’s not going to be one-note either – he’s not a psychotic, murdering
character. He has his episodes, but he’s much more complex than that.

NRAMA: And of course, something that can’t be ignored in that scene – the Guardians whispering “52”…

GJ: Right. I think this is the first time we’ve mentioned “52” in a monthly book…

NRAMA: Obviously, you’re not going to say much, if anything…but: event? Number? Group of people? Where they parked?

GJ: That’s the question, isn’t it? What does that number mean? That’s
something that we wanted to make sure we were doing when we were
working both on Crisis and 52 – “52” is going to mean something. It’s
really there to set the stage to let people know that 52 isn’t just a story about Booster Gold and Black Adam and these other characters – it’s a DC Universe story.

NRAMA:
And moving backward a little from there…putting Guy on guard duty at
Superboy Prime’s prison. No slight to the Giffen DeMatteis era, but that Guy, put on guard duty would’ve probably been a setup to the escape of the prisoner…Guy as he is now – not so much?

GJ: Oh, Guy now? It would never, ever happen on Guy’s watch.

NRAMA: So he’s not there as the foil – next issue shows Guy asleep or reading a magazine while Prime escapes?

GJ: Not at all. That’s ridiculous. Anyone who’s read Guy Gardner for the last two years in Green Lantern or in Corps
knows that he’s a much better, stronger character than that. And even
in the old Giffen stuff, he would probably break some rules, taunt the
other heroes, and drink a beer or two, but he wouldn’t be that much of
an idiot. He was never that much of an idiot, and certainly not with
what I’m doing with him, or with what Dave Gibbons is doing with him in
Corps. He has his moments, and he’s a really fun character, but he’s
definitely not gong to be a moron. His role is not DCU Moron. His role
is DCU Shitkicker.

NRAMA: Moving on from here in Green Lantern, you’ve still
got some missing time to fill in, in regards to the missing year when
Hal and his co-pilots were captured and held as prisoners of war…not to
mention he’s got bounty hunters and Global Guardians chasing him down…

GJ:
Right – the next arc really goes into what Hal went through during the
missing year, and the next four issues literally set up the next year
and half of Green Lantern – and put a new villain on the board that I’m
really excited about.

NRAMA: Any teases?

GJ: He’s a minor villain that appeared, but he’s just the perfect Hal Jordan villain.

NRAMA: So he’s been seen before?

GJ: Yes, briefly. Years ago. Trust me, for what we’re doing, and what you’ve seen so far in Green Lantern, this villain makes perfect sense.

NRAMA: And the “Wanted: Hal Jordan” arc will also explain why the Global Guardians are after him as well?

GJ: Yeah – it’s Hal finding out why everyone is chasing him, as well as
Hal dealing with his time as a POW and finding out what that was
actually about. It also talks about his duty as a Green Lantern,
comparing and contrasting it with the jobs that other super heroes do.
There’s a scene where he’s being lectured by another hero about the
Freedom of Power Treaty which prohibits foreign metahumans from
operating in other countries, and telling him that he needs to respect
the Treaty. As Hal’s said before, he answers with, ‘Borders are
ridiculous. I’m Green Lantern and my duty is to the whole planet if I
need to go somewhere, I’m going to go.’

And then, he adds: ‘Do you realize that I’ve been to hundreds of planets – hundreds, and the only one with countries is earth.’

NRAMA: Nice.

GJ: Whenever you see an alien planet in the DCU, it’s completely homogenized. You never see borders or states. Even with Hawkworld,
even though they had classes and zones, it was all one world. So we’re
playing with the idea that, in the universal view, earth is really this
primitive, primitive planet.

NRAMA: That goes back to where you showed one of Hal’s early trips back
to Oa after coming back, and there were some alien GLs who were
surprised that earthlings still existed, and could speak.

GJ: Right. They don’t know. And again, in their view, the people of
earth – there have been, other than the heroes, what, five that have
ever left their home planet, and they only went to the moon and hustled
right back. They think that’s hilarious. It’s basically like a guy
saying that he lives in Cincinnati and is somewhat worldly, because he
went up in a hot air balloon once. Woo.

But I think that’s fun – it gives a fun element to Green Lantern,
which the book needs to have. I think having Hal Jordan being the human
underdog is a great idea to mix in with everything else in the Corps.
We’ve always had this idea that the earth is the great center of
everything, and it’s not. What makes it strong is its diversity.

NRAMA: Just to touch on another of the larger themes that you’re bringing into the book – something that you played with in Rebirth
and also in the opening arc is something that’s reflective of the time,
that is, as Hal Jordan sees the earth, it’s almost polluted with fear.
It’s become the predominant emotion in the world, replacing even hope…

GJ:
Right – and that’s what Hal has to deal with. The borders with walls on
them – that’s out of fear. Airports – take a plane flight today, and
you come face to face with the effects of fear. Not only in the
screening process, but you look around – you’re asked to look around, and report on who scares you.

Whenever I fly – I’m half Lebanese – half of my family gets looked at
when they get on airplanes. They don’t blame people, it’s just what
they’re going to do, but it doesn’t make it any less annoying. I was
getting flagged at airports, because my middle name is Lebanese. My
wife and I couldn’t understand it when I kept getting pulled aside for
extra screening, and I finally realized that my middle name is right
there on the boarding pass.

Yeah, it’s a huge emotion, and in the book, there’s Coast City – a whole city that no one will live in because they’re afraid
of it. We had that whole scene when Hal was basically resigning himself
to the fact that he was going to be the only person living in Coast
City, and that fear is the biggest, strongest emotion there is, and
nothing can overcome it, when boom – his brother is driving in to Coast
City with his family to live. That was what Hal needed to see. People
can get over fear, and as Hal sees it, if it’s his job to help people
get over it, that’s what he’ll do. It plays into the whole view we’re
taking with the Green Lanterns and the Corps – when you see a cop
walking down the street, you feel pretty safe.

NRAMA: It seems that it’s really added a whole new dimension for you to
play with in regards to the character. Even though Hal was “born”
during the Cold War when there was plenty of fear to go around, this
inclusion of it in the larger picture…seems to really tie him to the
world a little more…and perhaps suggests that if he’s fighting an enemy
who uses fear as a weapon, it might be a tougher fight?

GJ: Could be. That could be.

NRAMA: Finally – how’re things looking schedule-wise?

GJ: We’re going as fast as we can, and we’ve talked about getting fill in artists here and there, but…look, on Titans,
we’re having all these fill in artists come on, and they’re okay, but I
love Tony [Daniel] to be there, but when you look at Ivan Reis on Green
Lantern, you just want him to draw the book. We’re trying our best to
get on track. Will we have a fill-in artist at some point? Maybe so we
can get to 12 issues a year. Right now, we’re at about nine a year. But
the quality…I’m so proud of the first arc. If you flip through it,
it’s just beautiful. I think we’re really on a roll, and I’d just hate
to break that up.

I know everybody’s worried about schedule at DC, and we’re seeing Grant
and Andy having fill-ins on Batman, and Wonder Woman has gone
bi-monthly, and it’s weird – it’s become commonplace for books to be
delayed for quality.

NRAMA: Yeah, but at the same time, and playing Devil’s advocate, why
not embrace the James Robinson model with an arc, then a “Times Past”
fill-in, and then another arc?

GJ: We did that with Flash with the Rogues and I’ve done it with Teen Titans,
where we just did a special Kid Devil/Blue Devil issue which really
reveals everything you need to – or didn’t need to know – about Kid
Devil, and those flesh out the characters and set up some stories for
the future. We have talked about doing one-off issues like that, where
we would tell a story where a planet is taken hostage, and they call in
Green Lantern as a hostage negotiator. What’s that like? They’d call in
a telepath from Titan on that as well…it’s a fun story, and if we get
behind again, we’ll probably do that, but I don’t want to sacrifice
quality. Anyone who’d come on for that issue is going to have to be at
Ivan’s level or better…or Ethan’s [Van Sciver] who’s doing the project
with me in April.

But we’re working as fast as we can, and I know it’s always a question
of what do people want? Do they want a book every month, or do they
want the best book the creators can do every month? We’re trying to get
everything on schedule, and the fact that Ivan’s into #15 right now,
and #14 is on track for the next couple of weeks…hopefully, we’ll get
things back on track.

NRAMA: Hey – of course if you need an idea for a one-off issue, you
always could reveal where John Stewart is…where is he anyway? Hal said
he’s undercover, but that was a long time ago…is he out from
undercover?

GJ: I don’t know…keep reading, and you’ll find out…soon. He’s not gone.
He’s going to be back and playing a prominent role in the book.
