NBC’s Heroes Debut Along with Web Comic

Mondo Media, Scoop, Friday, September 29, 2006

This past week, NBC debuted their latest hit television property,
Heroes, as well as announced that they will be releasing a weekly online
comic tie-in to coincide with each new episode. Heroes combines comic
book action with government conspiracy and apocalyptic visions to create a world
where flight, rapid regeneration and teleportation are a part of natural
    evolution.

Tapping into the comic industry’s pool of talent, including
Michael Turner, Jim Lee, Tim Sale, Aron Coleite and Jeph Loeb, who is also the
co-executive producer, the tie-in web comics fill in the gaps between episodes
and shed some light into the characters taking center stage in the show. The
first “webisode” details Mohinder Suresh search into the death of
his father, taking fans from his childhood experiences with his father to his
    migration to New York City.

“We’re going to do one a week to
correspond to the episodes,” Coleite told News-a-Rama. “Michael
Turner and Aspen are doing the first four. Jim Lee and Wildstorm are doing the
second four. And if we can tear Tim Sale away from all of the great work he’s
doing on the series, maybe he’ll do one or two. We’ve been so lucky to work with
    these amazing artists.”

    Interested readers can check out
information on the show, as well as read current webisodes by visiting www.nbc.com/Heroes.

    TRANSFORMERS

There’s two alerts for Transfans in the world! First, Click On Detroit
notes an opportunity to get close to the production. “Paid extras
needed for major motion picture ‘Transformers.’ The movie is directed
by Michael Bay with Steven Spielberg acting as executive producer.
Extras 16 years of age & older are needed to work outside for the
2-day scene currently scheduled for the first week of Oct. 2006. If you
are interested in possibly working as a paid extra in the film, please
    send information immediately.”

Meanwhile, if you’re in Kentucky, Hasbro has a press release
that’s right up your alley. “Thousands of TRANSFORMERS fans arriving
this weekend in Lexington, Kentucky for the official convention of the
TRANSFORMERS Collectors Club can meet the ‘voice’ of OPTIMUS PRIME.
trade action figures at more than 200 tables of TRANSFORMERS
collectibles, and many will be welcomed by a 40-member college marching
band playing the famed TRANSFORMERS theme song.”

So when you carch up with Peter Cullen, or get in the movie, all we ask is that you email us any scoops you come across.

    PAINKILLER JANE

The gun-toting creation will go back in front of the lenses this November, north of the border, according to The Vancouver Sun.
“Already making two television series and an animated feature film in
British Columbia, the fast-growing entertainment company Starz Media
will begin shooting a new series in B.C. in November. ‘Painkiller
Jane,’ based on the Event Comics comic book created by Jimmy Palmiotti
and Joe Quesada, will set up shop in Vancouver in the first week of
November. The series, consisting of 22 one-hour episodes, will be aired
in February on the SciFi Network in the U.S.”

    TMNT

Comingsoon.net reports that the release date for the action flick has been moved up a week to March 23rd, 2007.

    SPIDER-MAN 3

Actress Brenna Lee Roth posted some photos from the Sam Raimi-helmed production on her website, showing her getting her “thwip” on with ol’ Web Head himself, plus other set images.

    SMALLVILLE

Somebody couldn’t wait until tonight. If you can stand the spoilers, you can click here for Mediavillage’s early review of tonight’s season premiere. Plus, Chloe fans can get an eyeful with this image gallery of promotional photos over at Kryptonsite.

I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS

    Here’s where you
get in on the action. Did you see a link we didn’t catch? Have you
snuck into a closed movie set, and have inside data? Maybe your cousin
is dating somebody who knows something, and they had to tell you?
Whatever it is, we wanna know it all — fire off an email
and let us know whether you want your name used or your contributions
to geekdom to go down anonymously. Broadcasting live from Los Angeles,
this is novelist/karaoke host/all-around lunatic Hannibal Tabu saying thanks for your time and indulgence, fresh comics reviews are online, I’m producing a singer/songwriter showcase in San Pedro on Saturday,
and it’d be great to pack the room for some great music, and [tagline
sent back to development hell until something hipper can be dreamed
    up].

ROBERT DOWNEY JR. CAST AS TONY STARK - NEWSARAMA

Posted by Chris Mosby on 29th September 2006

ROBERT DOWNEY JR. CAST AS TONY STARK - NEWSARAMA

ROBERT DOWNEY JR. CAST AS TONY STARK

And we’ve got a Tony Stark.

The news broke last night, and hit the trades this morning – Robert
Downey Jr. will play Tony Stark/Iron Man in the upcoming film version
    of the Marvel comic series.

At his MySpace Iron Man Movie Group, director Jon Favreau wrote as the news was breaking:

“It is true. Robert Downey Jr. is Tony Stark. I am about as excited as
I can be. I saw what he can do and he is extremely enthusiastic about
playing Stark. I can say with absolute certainty that there is no
better choice. The humor and emotional dimension he brings truly raises
the bar on this project. Get ready.”

As reported previously, the film will be the first feature to be
produced independently by Marvel Entertainment and distributed by
Paramount. As The Hollywood Reporter describes the plot:

Downey will portray Tony Stark, a billionaire industrialist and
genius inventor who is kidnapped and forced to build a devastating
weapon. Using his intelligence and ingenuity, Stark instead builds a
high-tech suit of armor and escapes captivity. Upon his return to the
U.S., he uncovers a plot with global implications and must don his
    armor and protect the world.

The screenplay is written by Art Marcum & Matt Holloway and Mark
Fergus & Hawk Ostby. Filming is slated to begin in February, and
the movie is scheduled for a May 2, 2008 opening.

Marvel’s press release for the casting reads:

Academy Award(R) Nominee Robert Downey Jr. will take on the role of one
of Marvel’s greatest Super Heroes, signing on as the title character
for Marvel Studios’ highly-anticipated IRON MAN. This project, the
first feature film to be produced independently by Marvel
Entertainment, will launch into theaters May 2, 2008. The film is being
directed by Jon Favreau and will be distributed by Paramount Pictures.

Downey is widely recognized as one of Hollywood’s most versatile
actors. Nominated for an Oscar(R) for his extraordinary portrayal of
Charlie Chaplin in Chaplin, Downey has been featured in more than 50
films. His upcoming credits include Fur (co-starring Nicole Kidman), A
Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, and the David Fincher film Zodiac. He
has also recently been seen in such films as: A Scanner Darkly, The
Shaggy Dog, Good Night, and Good Luck, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Gothika,
The Singing Detective and Wonder Boys.

Based upon Marvel’s iconic Super Hero, IRON MAN tells the story of
Tony Stark, a billionaire industrialist and genius inventor who is
kidnapped and forced to build a devastating weapon. Instead, using his
intelligence and ingenuity, Tony builds a high-tech suit of armor and
escapes captivity. Upon his return to America, Tony must come to terms
with his past. When he uncovers a nefarious plot with global
implications, he dons his powerful armor and vows to protect the world
    as Iron Man.

“Robert Downey Jr. is one of the most talented and acclaimed
actors of this generation. His versatility sets him apart and makes him
an ideal fit to play such a complex character as Iron Man. We could not
think of another actor better suited to bring one of Marvel’s crown
jewels to the big screen and be the centerpiece of our first
independently produced feature,” said Kevin Feige, President of
    Production, Marvel Studios.

Marvel Studios is currently casting all supporting roles. Filming is slated to begin in Los Angeles in February 2007.

IRON MAN will be produced by Mr. Feige and Avi Arad. Executive
Producers are Michael Helfant, Ari Arad, Mr. Favreau, Louis D’Esposito
and Peter Billingsley. Mr. Downey is represented by CAA.

    Well this should be interesting…

Robert Downey Jr.: I am ‘Iron Man’

    LOS ANGELES, California
(Hollywood Reporter) — Robert Downey, Jr. is suiting up to star in
“Iron Man,” a superhero movie based on the Marvel Comics character.

Jon Favreau is directing the Paramount Pictures release. Filming is slated to begin in February in Los Angeles.

    Downey
will portray Tony Stark, a billionaire industrialist and genius
inventor who is kidnapped and forced to build a devastating weapon.
Using his intelligence and ingenuity, Stark instead builds a high-tech
suit of armor and escapes captivity. Upon his return to the U.S., he
uncovers a plot with global implications and must don his armor and
    protect the world.

The comic debuted in the 1960s, and Iron Man’s
origin involved Stark being a prisoner of the Viet Cong. The movie
version will be set in today’s geopolitical climate.

    Budgeted at
more than $100 million, it marks the first feature film to be produced
independently by Marvel Entertainment, which previously licensed its
characters, such as “Spider-Man” and “X-Men,” to other studios.

Marvel president of production Kevin Feige said the filmmakers looked for the best actor to embody the character.

    “The
Marvel characters are not just about how high they jump or how fast
they fly, they’re about their character flaws,” Feige said. “They’re
about their inner demons. They’re about the struggles that they go
through between being a man and being a hero.”

    Downey, who has
battled his fair share of inner demons, worked hard to get the role,
getting in shape and even growing a goatee like the one Stark sports in
    the comic books.

“In every casting announcement we’ve done,
people in their mind’s eye have their own view of it and let us know
about it. We’re used to it,” Feige said. “The point is, we looked at
everybody, and we found the best person for the role. It’s as confident
a casting move as we’ve ever done. The proof will be in the pudding,
    but he is Tony Stark.”

Downey returns to theaters on November 10 in the Diane Arbus bipic “Fur” opposite Nicole Kidman.

    OCCULT CRIMES TASKFORCEVariety is reporting
(subscription required) that Dimension Films has acquired movie rights
to “O.C.T.: Occult Crimes Taskforce,” an Image Comics series that
launched in July. Creator Rosario Dawson will produce as well as star
    in the film.
    SPIDER-MAN 3

Reader Bruce Kitun wrote in to note that a trailer playing on On Demand in Queens, NY has an interesting spoiler for the film (stop reading now if you don’t wanna know).
He writes, “I happened to read the description of the movie and was
surprised to read something along the lines of: “After working with a
specimen from the moon, Peter Parker realizes his new costume has a
    life of its own…’” Interesting.

    300

Frank Miller sat down for a chat
with Comics2FIlm, where he talked about bringing another project to the
silver screen. “It’s really hard to tell,” Miller said about what was
most satisfying to see translated. “The darker part of me would be when
they start to push the dead soldiers on the immortals. It’s so
perfectly realized, but the combat stuff is pretty stunning. There are
hundreds of images that I just looked at and, if I have to pick an
ultimate favorite it’s the shot of the boy stabbing the spear and
seeing the shadow of the wolf with the spear going through his mouth.
That was one of my favorite panels that I drew and he captured it to
    perfection.”

    INVINCIBLE

    Right here at CBR,
creator Robert Kirkman noted a movie version of his teen hero is in
development. “I’ve turned in the first draft of the screenplay and
people seem to like it. Other than that, nothing to report.” Thanks to
Mike Dano for reminding us of that one.

    30 DAYS OF NIGHT

Ghost House Pictures has posted a seventh behind the scenes clip from the Steve Niles adaptation, this time discussing having “Hard Candy” editor Art Jones on board.

    HEROES

According to the Hollywood Reporter, “Melrose Place” veteran Rena Sofer has landed a recurring role on the NBC superhuman drama, playing the wife of an aspiring politician.

    IRON MAN

Director Jon Favreau was interviewed on KCRW, and audio versions are available in multiple formats.

    HELLBOY

There’s an article at IESB which has some looks at the animated Hellboy and discusses the differences in the depiction.

    SMALLVILLE

MSN has an inside look at the series, while Kryptonsite has a new promotional gallery showing Aaron Ashmore as Jimmy Olsen. Nice sweater vest. Meanwhile, Devoted to Smallville has captured a new promotional banner ad for the show (and “Supernatural”), as well as an MP3 of a radio ad for the season premiere.
