PeterDavid.net: Trying to be sensitive to the Bush Administration

OK, I am not going to try to hide it anymore, Mr. David just hits the nail on the head every time.  Welcome to the new Politics category.

PeterDavid.net: Trying to be sensitive to the Bush Administration

Trying to be sensitive to the Bush Administration

Imagine the chagrin of the Bush Administration that that darned
uncontrollable liberal media has gone and started calling the civil war
in Iraq a civil war. Hilarious was Tony Snow’s attempting to define
exactly what a civil war was and, in doing so, described exactly what
was happening in Iraq…only to try and backpedal moments later and
explain why, no, no, that’s not it at all.

Ostensibly the administration is concerned that referring to it as a
Civil War could further voter discontent and objection to the war. It’s
hard to believe that discontent could be more profound than approval
ratings in the 30s and an election that turned the government back over
to the Democrats, so clearly the major worry is that the GOP candidate
for president in 2008 is going to suffer from his predecessor’s actions
having launched a civil war in another country.

Indeed, the only thing we’re waiting for now is assassination of the
current Iraqi leaders and a military overthrow of the current Iraqi
government, which seems to be on the very close horizon. Indeed, the
*only* thing that may be preventing that is the presence of our troops,
and I suspect even that isn’t going to hold matters in check forever.

In any event, with the current battering the Bush Administration is
taking, this blog will try to display some sensitivity. We here will
NOT be referring to the Iraqi situation as Civil War. Instead we will
refer to the overall situation as the CW, and events that transpire
there as CW Programming. That sonds a lot friendlier.

NEWSARAMA.COM: PREVIEW: GEORGE PEREZ: STORYTELLER, CHAPTER 4

PREVIEW: GEORGE PEREZ: STORYTELLER, CHAPTER 4

Okay, it was due
out last December, but, with something like George Perez
Storyteller
, it’s hard to get too annoyed about the year wait.
The book is due to hit stores tomorrow, and we’ve got a 25 page preview.

The volume
– a retrospective on the artist who’s shaped much of the modern
look of comics, is being published by Dynamic Forces, runs over
200 full color pages, and carries a $29.99 price tag. The material,
presented as a biography, is written by Christopher Lawrence, with
art – of course, by Perez.

As for that
title? It’s found at least one fan…

“I
think the title Nick [Barrucci, DF President] chose for the book
is very apt – Storyteller,” Perez told
Newsarama last year
. “That’s what I do, that’s what I want to
do,” Perez said. “I’m not here to do storyboards for movies, I’m
not here to make proposals for things that can be spun off into
movies, I do comics.”

X-Men illustrator dies in Superman pajamas – CNN.com

Now this is interesting.

The writer didn’t do their research completely, as Mr. Cockrum did get some royalties in 2004 after a campaign to help him with his medical bills.

X-Men illustrator dies in Superman pajamas
POSTED: 7:37 p.m. EST, November 28, 2006

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (AP) — Wearing Superman pajamas and covered with his Batman blanket, comic book illustrator Dave Cockrum died Sunday.

The
63-year-old overhauled the X-Men comic and helped popularize the
relatively obscure Marvel Comics in the 1970s. He helped turn the title
into a publishing sensation and major film franchise.

Cockrum
died in his favorite chair at his home in Belton, South Carolina, after
a long battle with diabetes and related complications, his wife Paty
Cockrum said Tuesday.

At Cockrum’s request, there will be no
public services and his body will be cremated, according to Cox Funeral
Home. His ashes will be spread on his property. A family friend said he
will be cremated in a Green Lantern shirt.

At Marvel Comics,
Cockrum and writer Len Wein were handed the X-Men. The comic had been
created in 1963 as a group of young outcasts enrolled in an academy for
mutants. The premise had failed to capture fans.

Cockrum and Wein
added their own heroes to the comic and published “Giant-Size X-Men No.
1″ in 1975. Many signature characters Cockrum designed and co-created
– such as Storm, Mystique, Nightcrawler and Colossus — went on to
become part of the “X-Men” films starring Hugh Jackman and Halle Berry.

Cockrum
received no movie royalties, said family friend Clifford Meth, who
organized efforts to help Cockrum and his family during his protracted
medical care.

“Dave saw the movie and he cried — not because he
was bitter,” Meth said. “He cried because his characters were on screen
and they were living.”

Cockrum was born in Pendleton, Oregon, the
son of an Air Force officer. He set aside his interest in art while
serving in Vietnam for the U.S. Navy.

He moved to New York
after leaving the service and got his big break in the early 1970s,
drawing the Legion of Super-Heroes for DC Comics before moving to
Marvel.

In January 2004, Cockrum moved to South Carolina after
being hospitalized for bacterial pneumonia. As his diabetes progressed,
his drawings became limited.

His last drawing was a sketch for a fan, who attended a small comic book convention in Greenville, Paty Cockrum said.

Meth said Cockrum will be remembered as “a comic incarnate.”

“He had a genuine love for comics and for science fiction and for fantasy, and he lived in it,” Meth said. “He loved his work.”
