CATCHING UP WITH ROBERT KIRKMAN – NEWSARAMA
CATCHING UP WITH ROBERT KIRKMAN
by Vaneta RogersRobert Kirkman’s manipulating a lot of worlds right now. The guy’s got
his fingers in everything from the Ultimate Universe to the “616″ to
the Image-verse to a couple different zombie-verses.Fans of his work know that he’s introducing new characters and killing others off so fast it’s hard to keep up. In Ultimate X-Men,
Kirkman’s finishing up a story arc that introduced Ultimate Cable and a
slew of other characters and promises to end with the death of a major
character and big changes for the series. In Walking Dead, his
new “Governor” character became one of the most villainous new
characters introduced in 2006, but the guy was served a brutal cup of
comeuppance in the series’ last issue. As if that weren’t enough, his new Irredeemable Ant-Man
series for Marvel has brought a new list of characters into the fold as
it plays with the idea of a hero that not only doesn’t fit the ideal
for superheroes, but is turning out to be a complete jerk, using the
costume more as a scam than for any honorable reasons. Then there’s his Invincible series for Image, where the
lead character has a brand new half-brother and is constantly juggling
threats as large as a race of aliens who want to take over the world
and as small as his girlfriend hanging out with some other guy. And the
success of the comic has given Kirkman another role to play as he
writes the script for an Invincible movie for Paramount Pictures.Add to this his upcoming work on more Marvel Zombies and a
rumored project with Todd McFarlane, and Kirkman’s image as a
mild-mannered writer starts looking like the disguise of a closet comic
book mogul. In an attempt to get a handle on what’s happening in all these “verses”
he controls and where they’re all going next, Newsarama sat down with
Kirkman to play a little catch up and find out if all the power’s gone
to his head yet.

JOURNEY INTO COMICS: TALKING TO JOANNE – NEWSARAMA

JOURNEY INTO COMICS: TALKING TO JOANNE – NEWSARAMA
JOURNEY INTO COMICS: TALKING TO JOANNE
by Michael San GiacomoOne of the people I wanted to read my story about my recent visit to Jerry Siegel’s old house was Jerry’s widow, Joanne.
She saw it, even before I had a chance to mail it to her, and responded with a nice letter.
She said it was okay to share parts of it with everyone, so here you go. (The stuff in parenthesis is mine.)
“I just read your article regarding your latest adventure together with Brad Meltzer in Jerry’s former house.
It was so delightful I read it twice. I could picture the whole thing -
going up those stairs to Jerry’s bedroom which Jerry told me he shared
with his next-in-age brother, Leo. Then up to the attic, that magic
place, where Jerry could have stored a mysterious treasure. As time passes, Jerry’s house gains more mystery and a more noticeable
vibration, an almost holy feeling that something happened there.
Something that has influenced many young people around the world for
good.My only visit there was after Jerry and I were married. His eldest
sister, Roslyn, was living there and invited us for the afternoon.Roslyn served cake and coffee while (her daughter) Marlene sang for us
while Isabel (Roslyn’s sister) played the piano. It was a happy visit. While Jerry lived in the house, Joe (Shuster) lived in the family’s
rented upstairs apartment on Amor Street, which was in a small and
pretty old building even then. The building is long gone now, leaving a
vacant lot.)The neighborhood where I was born and grew up is all gone. Every house
I lived in has been torn down, only a street sign remains. Buckeye
Road, that was a busy thriving business area is all boarded up I’ve
been told. It gives me a strange feeling.”Joanne Siegel, always a lady.
I told her that during the visit with Meltzer, the current owners of
Jerry Siegel’s house showed me something in a frame – the note she left
on their door when she and I visited the house almost 10 years ago. The
family had saved it. She warmed at the memory.I know Joanne might be pissed about me bringing up the complicated
legal situation between her family and DC over the rights to Superman
and Superboy, so I won’t get into all that. But I wish DC/Warner/AOL etc. would just settle the damn thing.
I mean, come on, figure it out so Joanne can enjoy a piece of what her husband created in that little house in Cleveland.
Yeah, yeah, I know all the legal arguments and previous settlements and
copyrights running out, yada-yada, but come on, figure it out.And then DC can actually call Superboy “Superboy” in the Legion of Superheroes cartoon show instead of the weirdly incongruous “Superman.”
And we can all feel good about Superman.
After all, it’s Christmas.

“FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER” TEASER RELEASED
Press Release One of the most popular products released this year by Dark
Horse Deluxe, the merchandise division of Dark Horse Comics, Inc., was
the sculpted reproduction of the spaceship Serenity, from the Universal
Studios film directed by Joss Whedon. An instant sell-out, the detailed ornament features two ways to display it: a traditional hook-and-eye device and a small base with a dowel that allows it to be placed on a flat surface.Because of strong demand from collectors, Dark Horse now is planning a
limited release of a variant ornament. This version will be titled
“Serenity In Disguise”, and depicts the ship as it looks when the crew finds it necessary to alter its appearance in order to pass as one of the evil Reavers’ ships. This will be a limited edition release with a production run based on advance orders. No further manufacturing will take place after the initial edition size is set. The cut-off date for these advance orders is March 1, 2007, to be released in May. No reorders will be honored, so Dark Horse advises retailers and consumers to order in a timely fashion, and to anticipate their long-term needs when doing so.
Additionally, the coming year will see the release of the first set of PVC features based on three of the movie’s prominent characters. This set has been beautifully sculpted by Gentle Giant Studios, and includes the heroic and handsome Captain Malcolm Reynolds, the rough, but loveable Jane, and the mysterious River Tam.
The Serenity PVC set arrives on sale May 16, 2007 carrying $17.99 price tag.
The limited edition Serenity variant ornament arrives on sale in May for $19.99.
Look for more exciting Serenity products in the coming year, as well as a new comic series to be released in the fall.

Romita Spider-Man #94 Cover at Comiclink
Auctions/Prices, Scoop, Friday, December 22, 2006
In January, ComicLink Auctions will offer the only Amazing Spider-Man cover art depicting the classic Spider-Man origin scene where Peter Parker is bitten
by the radioactive spider which gives him his super powers. This famous image is skillfully rendered by John Romita who also worked a lot of other detail into
this dynamic cover. The action cover has Spidey fighting the blood thirsty Beetle who is flying through the air with Aunt May in his clutches. There is
also a montage at the bottom with the important people in Peter’s early life as Spider-Man; J. Jonah Jameson, Betty Brant, Aunt May, Uncle Ben and the thief
that murdered Uncle Ben and led to Peter’s adopting the maxim of “with great power comes great responsibility” and to his becoming a superhero.
ComicLink is continuing to take consignments for this auction but this item, and a bevy of other key Original Comic Art, Golden Age, Silver, Bronze Age
and other items, can now be viewed in ComicLink’s initial auction preview at:

JAY FAERBER’S DYNAMO 5 LAUNCHES IN MARCH @ IMAGE
Press Release
Captain Dynamo was the world’s greatest super-hero. His
adventures inspired millions, who stand in shock at the news of his
death. But as he’s being set to rest, his family learns that with great
power came great infidelity. Now, as Captain Dynamo’s ememies descend
upon his city, his widow must round up his five illegitimate children –
each with one of their father’s spectacular powers – to fill the void
he left in their world, and to start filling the one he left in their
lives. Image proudly announces the mind-blowing debut of Jay Faerber’s
new ongoing series, DYNAMO 5!“Dynamo 5 is about the human aspect of being superhuman,” says series
creator Jay Faerber. “Most super-hero teams are made up of strangers
