LYING IN THE GUTTERS - EVERYBODY’S TALKING ABOUT COUNTDOWN
Filed under: Comic Book News, Coming Soon, DC Comics
Looks like a new thing to sink my money in…
Comic Book Resources - Comic Book News, Reviews and Commentary - Updated Daily!
EVERYBODY’S TALKING ABOUT COUNTDOWN
Well, DC kept the solicitations for previously LITG’d “Countdown” issues 51,50,49 and 48 out of the solicitation listings they sent to the press, but they remained in the online catalogue and can be seen here, priced at $2.99 each, with a poster, as
well as a signed version of #51 from Dynamic Forces.
What hasn’t beenseen yet are the solicitation details. Well, I can tell you that each issue will have a different creative team, with Paul Dini acting as
“showrunner,” “52″’s Keith Giffen providing breakdowns and Andy Kubert and Tim Townsend providing covers.
Looking at May’s issues, the first issue, #51, is written by Paul Dini and drawn by Jesus Saiz. “Hawkman” team Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray write the
next issue, drawn by Jim Califiore. Then Tony Bedard writes, with Carlos Magno on art and finally Adam Beecham writes #48 with art from David Lopez.
This seems like a perfect way for DC to carry over the large audience that “52″ carved out for itself and for lots of happy retailers. Expect lots of early
incentives to keep them on board as as well.
Also expect to hear plenty more details about this from DC at NYCC and in this week’s Previews. It’s notable that on the Diamond website, there is no
available “back cover” image file for Previews. Yet. I understand that will update on Thursday.
It’s okay, that’s what I’m here for.
I’ll have a consonant please, Carol.

OVER AND DONE: TWST, McFARLANE SETTLE - NEWSARAMA
Interesting stuff…
OVER AND DONE: TWST, McFARLANE SETTLE - NEWSARAMA
OVER AND DONE: TWST, McFARLANE SETTLE
At one time, the verdict was up to $24.5 million, but in the end, Tony Twist and Todd McFarlane’s insurance companies settled their case for a
$5 million payout to the former hockey player, this according to the St. Louis post-Dispatch. The settlement has been approved by an Arizona bankruptcy court. The case, tried initially in 2000 was brought forward by Twist who alleged that McFarlane’s naming a mob boss “Antonio Twistelli” who went
by the moniker “Tony Twist” in Spawn was done with malevolent intent and as a result, damaged his reputation and resulted in financial damages. In hockey, Twist was an “enforcer” for the St. Louis Blues, a player who fans love to hate, and was known for his rough playing style. While the character was introduced in Spawn in 1993, Twist didn’t file suit until 1997, claiming that having the character named
after him damaged his ability to obtain lucrative endorsement deals, that is, he suffered financial damages from what he saw as McFarlane’s
unauthorized use of this name. Image Comics, which publishes Spawn, as well as Wizard Magazine, which published a Spawn Special were among other defendants named in the case, but they were all dropped, with the end result of Twist suing TMP alone. The jury found for Twist in 2000, awarding him $24.5 million in damages. That decision was tossed out on appeal, but then in 2004, a second trial ordered by the Missouri Supreme Court saw a $15 million award go to Twist, which was also appealed, but upheld in June of 2006. In December of 2004, with the $15 million verdict looming, McFarlane Productions (the only arm of the McFarlane businesses named in the Twist complaint) declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy to protect the company, and allow it to continue operation.

GHOST RIDER TAKES THE BOX OFFICE - NEWSARAMA
This kind of surprises me, but I guess it shouldn’t. Check out my review of this movie here.
GHOST RIDER TAKES THE BOX OFFICE - NEWSARAMA
GHOST RIDER TAKES THE BOX OFFICE
The Nic Cage vehicle (no pun intended) Ghost Rider, based on the Marvel character, took the #1 spot in this weekend’s
domestic box office race, totaling an estimated $44.5 million over the first three days of this four-day President’s Day Weekend’s holiday.
The Sony release should total around $51m through the extended Friday-Monday period, according to boxofficeguru.com.Ghost Rider performed nearly identically as the last Mark Steven Johnson-directed film based on a Marvel property released on President Day’s Weekend - 2003’s Daredevil. That film grossed $40.3m over its first three days and $45m over its first four, which adjusted for today’s ticket prices would be very
similar to Ghost Rider’s take.Ghost Rider doubled the performance of the #2 film Bridge to Terabithia, set a new President’s Day weekend opening weekend record, besting the $45.1m four-day launch of 2004’s 50 First Dates, and help set a new record for the Top 10 grossing films over any weekend in
the January-to-April span, all this despite delays in the film’s original release that took it from a summer 2006 debut to this weekend,
less-than-stellar reviews, and a decision by Sony not to screen thefilm for critics prior to its release.According to boxofficeguru.com, Sony’s own research indicated that 62% of the film’s audience as male, while 55% was under the age of 25, and
the movie accounted for one-third of all ticket sales within the top ten and posted the largest opening of any film over the last six months. This was just the opening salvo for what looks like a big year for comic book based films, particularly Marvel-based films, with both Spider-Man 3 and the sequel to Fantastic Four due this summer.
