DC’s Countdown: What we know so far…

OK, I have read through the articles\interviews that have come out about Countdown so far, and here is a summary. Let me know if I missed anything.

  1. Series will start one week after 52 ends, on 5/9/2007. (But it will be $2.99 instead of $2.50)
  2. This series will be “where s–t blows up” (An obvious attempt to bring in Marvel Comics fans)
  3. Main characters will be Jimmy Olsen and Mary Marvel. Kyle Rayner, Donna Troy, and Jason Todd playing some role; but to what extent wasn’t given.
  4. One Dan Didio’s goals is to revive/redo/modernize (depends on how it turns out) Kirby’s Fourth World characters, who have been absent from DC Comics for a while.
  5. Head writer is Paul Dini (big picture) and editor is going to be Mike Mart, with other writers brought in to write individual issues. First up is Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray (ewww), Adam Beechem (Nice!), Sean McKeever, and Tony Bedard (way cool!).
  6. Series will be set in present time, but not day-to-day\week-to-week like 52
  7. What is the series counting down to? Dan Didio: “It’s pretty simple – we’re counting down to the next big event at DC ComicsPaul Dini: “It’s counting down to me going insane. And it’s counting down to one of the biggest events that could ever conceivably be part of the DC Universe. I’m going to leave it vague on that.

It is going to be interesting to see how this turns out.

WordPress › Blog » New Releases: 2.1.1 and 2.0.9

By Matt. Filed under Releases.

We’ve got a new bugfix and security release for both of our actively maintained branches of WordPress. Version 2.1.1 includes about 30 bug fixes, mostly minor things around encoding, XML-RPC, the object cache, and HTML code. It’s available for immediate download on our download page.

Version 2.0.9 only includes the security update, which was around the code we use to prevent XSS. You can download it from our release archive. As a reminder, we’ve committed to proving security updates to 2.0 through 2010, but all new features and development are going into the newer branch, which is at this time 2.1.

This is a low-to-medium priority update recommended for all WordPress users. After the break is a list of changed files.

[UPDATED] COUNTDOWN
DC unleashes its next weekly comic event, and head writer Paul Dini gives Wizard the exclusive scoop!

Toss out your stopwatches, people—DC Comics takes control of counting down from now on.

Beginning May 9, the week after the final issue of 52 hits shelves, DC unleashes Countdown,
a massive, yearlong weekly series with writer Paul Dini sitting at the
steering wheel. The series literally counts down as it starts with
issue #51 and screeches to a deafening halt with issue #0. Along for
the rip-roaring ride will be a slew of backup writers, the entire DCU
and enough action to melt your face.

“This is the ‘sh– blows up’ book,” deadpans the series’ Associate Editor Jeanine Schaefer about Countdown’s mammoth tone. And Senior VP-Executive Editor Dan DiDio couldn’t agree more.

“[Countdown] takes the best of Infinite Crisis and best of 52
and gives an even broader look at the DCU,” says DiDio. “It is going to
be a fast-paced action story that really ties in and plays through all
of the DC Universe on multiple levels. Paul Dini is the head writer,
and he’ll be bringing consistency in tone and voice to all the
characters. [It’s] something he did so well on ‘Batman: the Animated
Series’ and all the TV shows he’s worked on.”

We tackled the Countdown
chief, Dini himself, to tell us why he’s doing the book, how much
“Lost” influences the title and what surprising characters will find
themselves in the spotlight.

COUNTING DOWN: DAN DIDIO AND MIKE MARTS ON DC’S NEW WEEKLY SERIES - NEWSARAMA

COUNTING DOWN: DAN DIDIO AND MIKE MARTS ON DC’S NEW WEEKLY SERIES

So – DC’s 52 ends on May 2nd (yeah, 5/2 – clever, no?). What are you going to pick up the following week to fill that weekly comics hole?

Countdown - DC’s new year-long weekly series that sees Paul Dini
take the chair as head writer, orchestrating a story that will span
several other writers, artists and a universe.

We sat down with DC Senior VP-Executive Editor Dan Didio and Senior Editor Mike Marts (who’ll be editing Countdown) to talk about the project in depth.

Newsarama: Since we’re starting from the ground up here, the first question is probably the most basic: What is Countdown?

Dan Didio: Countdown is the next weekly comic book series coming from DC that starts the week following the conclusion of 52. So – we’ve got 52 #52 coming out on 5/2 – an amazing coincidence in and of itself, and then on 5/9, we start with the beginning of Countdown.

It’s a weekly comic, and that’s probably where most of the similarities begin and end between Countdown and 52. 52
existed in its own timeslot, meaning that it was occurring in a “year
out of time,” meaning that it was occurring in a period when we
weren’t, or didn’t tell any other stories at the same time, so as a
result, it didn’t interact much with what was going on in the
concurrent comics. Countdown, however, will act as a spine for
the DC Universe, and will be reflective of the events taking place
across the DCU, month by month as the series progresses.
