TAPPING IN TO EVIL: ETHAN VAN SCIVER ON SINESTRO CORPS

by Vaneta Rogers

Ethan Van Sciver is no stranger to ground-breaking Green Lantern stories.

In the 2005 mini-series Green Lantern: Rebirth, Van Sciver
and writer Geoff Johns redefined the Green Lantern Corps. From bringing
back fan-favorite Guy Gardner to reintroducing the Guardians of Oa to
explaining the downfall and resurrection of Hal Jordan to establishing
a whole new Corps, Rebirth became the new bible for fans of the Green Lantern universe.

Now Van Sciver and Johns are reuniting for a 64-page one-shot in June
that promises to take the Green Lantern universe to yet another level.
Called Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps Special #1, the comic will explore and explain what has been teased for months within the pages of the ongoing Green Lantern series. Evil villain Sinestro, who hasn’t been seen much since the pages of Rebirth,
is gathering together an army of frightening characters and giving them
yellow rings, then transporting them to the Sinestro Corps home base on
the planet Qward. Why this is happening and what happens next will be
revealed within the pages of the one-shot.

And as fans have seen in a new series of back-up stories in the Green Lantern
title, called “Tales of the Sinestro Corps,” readers are going to have
a slew of new baddies and origin stories to feast upon as a result of
this story.

As Van Sciver took a break for lunch between drawing pages for the
comic and running to Kinkos to copy and overnight them to DC, he sat
down to briefly talk to Newsarama about the series and all the
characters he’s designing. And although he was understandably
tight-lipped about the story’s details, one thing became abundantly
clear as he talked: Van Sciver’s pretty excited about this one.

SWEEEEET!!

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #8 – TURNER COVER – NEWSARAMA

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #8 – TURNER COVER

At both his MySpace page and blog Brad Meltzer has posted the fully revealed version of Michael Turner’s full cover to Justice League of America #8
which kicks off the JLA/JSA/Legion of Super-Heroes crossover (the guy
with the high collar is Karate Kid – no, not Ralph Macchio – he still
works as an editor at Marvel(*)).

Meltzer wrote:

“Seven days until JLA/JSA kicks off, so here’s a peek at Michael
Turner’s actual cover. Also, just got the new covers for all the novel
covers (publisher is redoing them all (from Tenth Justice to Zero Game)
for when The Book of Fate comes out in paperback in 2 weeks). As I get
the final images, I’ll post them here next week as well.

Plus, wait till you see who’s doing the intro for the JLA hardcover collecting The Tornado’s Path…”

But back to that Karate Kid thing – while Karate Kid is a long-time
member of the Legion of Super-Heroes in all its iterations over the
years, this outfit is…retro. That is, the outfit isn’t what the Karate Kid has been most recently seen wearing in Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes, but rather what he used to wear a reboot or two back. Circa the ’70s, when he was drawn by Mike Grell or Dave Cockrum.

And someone who seemed to be Dream Girl was in Justice Society of America #4. Oh, and Starman over in JSA seems to be from the Legion’s timeline as well, but…older…

Yeah, yeah – color us confused too.

The solicitation for the issue reads:

Written by Brad Meltzer; Art by Ed Benes and Sandra Hope; Cover by Michael Turner; Variant cover by Phil Jimenez

Beginning the long awaited, epic crossover between the new Justice
League and the new Justice Society, uniting the combined writing
talents of best-selling author Brad Meltzer and comics mega-star Geoff
Johns for the ultimate team-up! “The Lightning Saga” 5-parter begins
with the mystery of who Trident is, and how his identity crisis will
change everything!
