BOOM! Studios Announces Tom Fassbender new VP of Publishing Comic and Book Publishing Veteran Brings Firm Hand to Explosive Growth
September 18th, 2007
Los Angeles -BOOM! Studios announced today that Tom Fassbender has taken the role of VP of Publishing for the company. Fassbender will
provide a steady hand and a veteran’s expertise to all aspects of the comic book publishing concern.
Coming on the heels of the appointment of Mark Waid as Editor-in-Chief and Chip Mosher as Marketing and Sales Director, the
addition of Fassbender completes a round of expansion in personnel catapulting BOOM! Studios into its next phase of growth. Fassbender
began work at BOOM! Studios this past August.
“Tom is a multi-hyphenate. He’s published comics. He’s written comics. He’s published books. He’s written books. He’s worked in
comic distribution. He’s managed a retail comic store. Hell, he’s even been an Eisner judge. You just can’t find experience this in one
place. And now he’s working at BOOM!” said Ross Richie.
“Tom’s a great guy, with gut-level business instincts that are as good as any I’ve seen. He’s got the nuts and bolts of this industry
down. I love working with him. We make a great team. He’s got his eye on the clock and is making sure the trains make it out of the station
on time,” said Mark Waid.
Fassbender started his career in comics as manager of the retail store Capital City Comics in Madison, Wisconsin. Later, he quickly
earned the status of Product Management Specialist for Capital City Distribution (no relation to the retail operation) in the early
nineties. In charge of solicited materials in Advanced Comics, Tom was the final arbiter over what Capital City Distribution offered to
stores, and he built a reputation for championing works by such talents as Paul Pope, David Lapham, Rick Veitch and many, many others.
During his time at Capital City Distribution, Fassbender was chosen as a judge for the 1995 Eisner Awards and Heroes Illustrated named
him on of the top 100 most influential people in comics.
Subsequently, Fassbender did a brief stint at the short-lived Motown Comics before starting UglyTown, a mystery-novel publisher he
co-founded with Jim Pascoe. UglyTown rapidly gained a reputation for dynamic packaging and cutting-edge fiction from authors like Victor
Gischler, Sean Doolittle, Eddie Muller, and Gary Phillips.
Fassbender has also worked on such hit comics like BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, HELLBOY, and STAR WARS with co-writer Jim Pascoe. His
creative work experience on licensed properties will serve him ingood stead at BOOM! as the company expands into its licensed comics,
having most recently announced the acquisition of THE GODFATHER license at San Diego Comic-Con International this summer. THE
GODFATHER will be one of the many titles Fassbender will shepherd in his new position when it launches early in 2008.
BOOM! has gone through a growth spurt like no other publisher this past year. At the 2007 Book Expo in New York, BOOM! announced its new
mass-market book distribution deal via Perseus, a unique relationship for a comic book publisher that positions BOOM! alongside one of the
market leaders in book retailing. Perseus recently acquired Publisher’s Group West and continues to grow and expand its reach
into the mass market. By the end of this summer, BOOM! will be offering through Perseus a line of trade paperback graphic novels
collecting their popular series, including TALENT, HERO SQUARED, TAG, DEATH VALLEY, and X ISLE.
In the last twelve months, BOOM! has sold three of its comic book series to Hollywood: THE FOUNDATION was purchased in a preemptive
pre-publication bid by Paramount Pictures, while Universal Studios bought TALENT and TAG last year.
Last December’s launch of WARHAMMER 40,000: DAMNATION CRUSADE initiated a new, successful series of comic books and graphic novels
followed up with the summer’s launch of WARHAMMER: FORGE OF WAR. BOOM! enjoys the unique position of being one of only four licensors
of Games Workshop material and will continue to grow and expand its line of WARHAMMER 40,000 and WARHAMMER series.
Capitalizing on that success, BOOM! announced a comic book andgraphic novels license with Epic Games’ mega-selling GEARS OF WAR
video game. This fall will see a huge launch for this exciting new property.

NASCAR.COM - Earnhardt to be in No. 88 with Pepsi, National Guard - Sep 19, 2007
I am so glad the wait is over!
NASCAR.COM - Earnhardt to be in No. 88 with Pepsi, National Guard - Sep 19, 2007
Earnhardt to be in No. 88 with Pepsi, National
Guard
DALLAS — Dale Earnhardt Jr. will have two 8s on his new car.
NASCAR’s
most popular driver will be in the No. 88 Chevrolet when he moves to
Hendrick Motorsports next season, the team announced Wednesday.
Earnhardt’s car will be sponsored by Pepsi, with the company’s Mountain
Dew soft drink and Amp Energy drink featured on the car. The National
Guard will also be involved in the sponsorship. The new number
and sponsor are another step in the rebranding of Earnhardt from party
boy to serious corporate pitchman, one that now can be heavily marketed
to the under-21 crowd.“I never thought a car number would create this much excitement,” said car owner Rick Hendrick,
who has won seven Nextel Cup titles. “Trying to do it and keep it quiet
from the rest of the world until you have it all together, it was
probably the toughest thing I’ve ever done in motorsports.”Earnhardt
has driven the No. 8 Chevrolet for DEI since 2000 with Budweiser’s
sponsorship. He tried to take the No. 8 with him to Hendrick, but
stepmother Teresa Earnhardt refused to give up her rights to it. Mark Martin and Aric Almirola will co-drive that car next year and it will be sponsored by the U.S. Army.Budweiser will become the primary sponsor next season for the No. 9 Dodge driven by Kasey Kahne.
“It’s
important that we work hard and make a good statement as we close this
out and start a new chapter next year,” Earnhardt said. “The
anticipation is at a boiling point. I’m ready to get over to Rick’s and
start racing.”The No. 88 was retired by Robert Yates Racing, which asked NASCAR to transfer the number to Hendrick for Earnhardt.
“Ralph
Earnhardt drove the No. 88 Oldsmobile in 1957 and because of this
number’s history with the Earnhardt family, I felt car No. 88 should
continue with Dale Earnhardt Jr.,” Robert Yates said in a statement.
“Younger fans don’t realize I built cars and raced against Ralph. I
also had a very close relationship with Dale Earnhardt Sr. I’m proud to
transfer this number to Dale Jr.”The driver unveiled his line of candy bars, “Dale Jr.’s Big Mo’,” at a candy expo in Chicago on Tuesday.
Earnhardt
had already signed personal services contracts with Adidas and Sony. He
became the fourth athlete to receive a clothing line from Adidas,
joining soccer’s David Beckham, football’s Reggie Bush and basketball’s
Tracy McGrady. The car sponsorship was announced in Dallas, where
1,500 Pepsi bottlers were holding their annual meeting. Earnhardt
appeared before that group before publicly announcing the deal.

KEVIN MURPHY ON RIFF TRAX & FILM CREW
by Steve Fritz
Admit it. Hadn’t there been a time, whether munching on popcorn in a
theater or bathed in the cool blue light of your home system, when you
just cut a comment on what you’re watching? Even better, you end up
causing more laughter than the film itself? Best yet, the film is
trying to be serious?Admit it. You know you have. If not, you know someone who did. It’s a
common movie experience. It’s as ingrained into the cinematic
experience as rooting for the hero, throwing something at the screen or
just making out. It happens in old grindhouses, movie palaces, cookie
cutter complexes and now even IMAX theaters.Bill Corbett, Kevin Murphy
and Mike Nelson, now known as The Film Crew, have made such commentary
part of their collective life work. We first met them on TV, when they
were Mystery Science Theatre 3000, where their commentary literally took films like Plan 9, Bloody Mama or some rubber suit monster hoot and gave them entirely new meaning with their side comments. Now, thanks in part to Shout Factory! they’re doing it again under the
name of The Film Crew. So far they’ve skewered an incredibly awful
sci-fi chiller starring a young Peter Graves called Killers From Space, a not-quite ancient noir featuring not-really-that young Rue McClanahan in her skivvies, and The Wild Women of Wongo which stars a very buxom Adrienne Bourbeau (no, not THAT Adrienne Barbeau). A fourth film, a sword-and-sandals effort entitled Giant of Marathon, starring a heavily greased Steve Reeves, is slated for October.Yet to paraphrase a certain fave animated porcine pal, that ain’t all
folks. Mssrs. Corbett, Murphy and Nelson have also set up an online
facility where they take on any film they want to, including those not
in the public domain, under the name of RiffTrax. Their renting and
rendering of comic book classics such as The Batman, any of the Superman films and now Frank Miller’s 300
compelled us at Newsarama to suss them out and pop a few cherry cokes
and Ju Ju Bes with them. Fortunately, the Crew’s eldest member, Kevin
Murphy, complied. For those who don’t know. Murphy is the veteran member of the team, having done MST3K
for nine years (he was the voice of Tom Servo). From there he went on
to author an absolutely fabulous book about going to a different movie
theater every day for a year. Naturally, he’s done a lot, lot more, but
we’ll let you find that out on your own.In the meantime, here’s what he had to say. So turn down the lights, make yourself comfortable, and get the projector rolling.
