ALEX ROSS & ED BRUBAKER ON CAP’S NEW LOOK - NEWSARAMA
ALEX ROSS & ED BRUBAKER ON CAP’S NEW LOOK
Yesterday’s announcement
that a new Captain America was on the way in January – wearing a new
costume designed by Alex Ross – clearly made the impact Marvel was
looking for. Within an hour of the announcement, comic fans the
internet over were buzzing, weighing in on the new look, the shininess,
the knife and gun, and more. We spoke with Ross and Captain America writer Ed Brubaker for their takes on the new look, as well as some hints as to why things changed.First up, Alex Ross:
Over the past decade, many publishers have tapped a specific source
when a new costume or redesign is needed, and when Marvel needed a new
look for Captain America, they went to that same source: Alex Ross.Ross, a student of Golden Age design and Silver Age sensibilities (he
often describes himself as “the youngest 60 year old in comics” – he’s
37) has an ability, according to many editors and creators, to hit the
nail on the head when it comes to evoking the essence of a character
through their costume. In this particular case, that challenge was a sizable one – as Ross told us when discussing his upcoming Avengers/Invaders
project with Marvel, he feels the Captain America costume is one of the
most iconic in comics today. And he has a point – it’s remained largely
unchanged for over sixty years, since first envisioned by Joe Simon. So
how did he attack the prospect of creating something new out of
something old?We asked him.

[Edit]This blog has been named one of the “Blogs to visit when attackers target Microsoft Windows”
I have to thank Rod Trent for bring this to my attention this morning.
Bill Brenner over on TechTarget had this to say in a recent blog post.
“In times like these, when IT administrators are trying to determine which flaws to deal with first, it helps to have an array of security blogs
to visit where the vulnerability details are sliced and diced and fellow IT pros can explain how they are addressing a threat in their
environments.I visit many of these blogs when trying to figure out which security issues need to be written about on any given day, and would like to devote this week’s
column to sharing them. And so here’s my list:”Not only am I on the list, but I am second in line
![]()
Not bad for a blog with no content huh?
In any case I am really glad to see that there are people out there that appreciate my meager attempts at trying to keep the community informed on various security issues. This and all of the people that have come up to me at MMS to give thanks for what I do really make it all worth while.
Thanks again!

New Poll: What do you think of Captain America’s new design?
Filed under: In case you missed it, Marvel Comics, Polls, Pop Culture
I saw that Newsarama has a poll up on Captain America’s new look, but I think they missed a question so check out the new poll I have on the left sidebar. If you think I left out a question, let me know!
NEWSARAMA.COM: MARVEL REVEALS “NEW” CAPTAIN AMERICA
Filed under: Comic Book News, In case you missed it, Marvel Comics
I can’t say I like Cap carrying a gun, but I guess we should all be suprised they went this long without it.
Having Alex Ross help with the design was a good idea, having is work be how you see the new design for the first time is a good idea.
NEWSARAMA.COM: MARVEL REVEALS “NEW” CAPTAIN AMERICA
MARVEL REVEALS “NEW” CAPTAIN AMERICA
Marvel promised a reveal of…something today at noon – something to do with Alex Ross. Their only news announcement of the week.
Speculation has ranged from something involving Captain America (Ross is one of the creative forces behind Avengers/Invaders coming next year from Marvel) to possibly Marvels 2 and…well, really back to Captain America.
As for the reveal? Looks like those betting on Captain America were right.
But what…or who is it? One thing that Marvel makes clear - it’s not Steve Rogers. He’s still dead.
The top image is a 50/50 variant cover for Captain America #34,
due in January. As for what the costume is all about? It’s the return
of Captain America - or “a” Captain America. Writer Ed Brubaker reveals
that he’d long had the idea of a new Cap debuting in January of the
year following his death, and just mentioned that Marvel should get
Alex Ross to design the new look.Desires and wishes have become reality, apparently. And yes - this Cap
has a knife and a gun. And a chest emblem that’s reminiscent of Cap’s
original triangular shield. As for who’s in it…well, that one
secret’s not being revealed. Until January. One interesting aspect of this new design will be the public’s reaction
to this iconic symbol of America - a character who in the past fought
symbolically armed only with a shield and his fists and who famously
was depicted punching out Adolph Hitler with his bare knuckles - now
arming himself with a handgun and hunting knife. The gun is a throwback
to the movie serial days of Cap, when he did pack heat to take out bad
guys, but in regards to the weapons - will they be regarded as a sign
of the times or just another superhero story?Looking for more on the outfit and where it came from - and why it’s shiny? Check back at Newsarama tomorrow at 10:00 am EST for an in-depth interview with both Ed Brubaker and Alex Ross.
