This really makes me sad.  When I was a kid, he was my hero.  They don’t make people like him anymore.

He will be missed.

  • Evel Knievel dead at 69, according to his Web site
  • Knievel a famous motorcycle daredevil, tried to jump Snake River Canyon
  • Knievel image spawned toys, merchandise, appeared on magazine covers

(CNN) — Evel Knievel, the motorcycle daredevil
whose stunts — including an attempted leap over Idaho’s Snake River
Canyon — made him a popular cultural figure, is dead, according to his
Web site, evelknievel.com. He was 69.

Over his career, Knievel
was said to have broken practically every bone in his body — some
multiple times. With his red-white-and-blue jumpsuits, shock of hair
and stone-faced mein, he was a fixture on ABC’s program “Wide World of
Sports” in the 1970s, his stunts perennial ratings-grabbers.

Knievel’s
most famous stunt was probably an attempt to jump the quarter-mile wide
Snake River Canyon in 1974 on his rocket-powered “Sky-Cycle.” (He had
hoped to jump the Grand Canyon, but couldn’t get permission.) The
attempt failed, but the publicity was priceless. PhotoSee photos of the motorcycle daredevil »

His fame even spawned a movie, “Viva Knievel!” in 1977.

Robert Craig Knievel was born October 17, 1938, in Butte, Montana.

Earlier
this week, Knievel amicably settled a lawsuit with rap star Kanye West
over West’s use of a persona called “Evel Kanyevel” in his video for
“Touch the Sky.”

“I was very satisfied and so was he,” Knievel told The Associated Press.

DC Comics legends Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman are all featured in the film as well as Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter and The Flash ¬ as they band together to form the legendary super team. Strangers at first, these very different heroes must overcome fear and suspicion to forge an alliance against a monster so formidable, even the mighty Superman cannot stop it alone. If they fail, the entire planet will be “cleansed” of humanity.

Justice League: The New Frontier DVD will feature incredible extras including:

“Super Heroes United!: The Complete Justice League History”- The documentary is a comprehensive forty seven year Justice League chronology from the inception in the comics to vivid animated renditions. The story is told with a myriad of interviews tracing back the early days of DC Super Hero team ups during the Golden Age, to the Silver Age rendition where the established heroes emerged and beyond. “Audio Commentary I” (featuring the talented filmmakers of New Frontier)

“Audio Commentary II” (featuring Comic Book Writer and Artist Darwyn Cooke)

• Widescreen (1.78:1)

• 5.1 Dolby Digital

The 2 disc Special Edition DVD will feature even more incredible extras
including:

“The Legion of Doom: The Pathology of the Super Villain”- This documentary will examine the early mythological archetypes of nemesis characters from a historical perspective, and see how the tenants of this rich history were adapted and woven into the Justice League stories. The bonus feature includes many of the talent included in Super Heroes United! As well as Jim Kreuger (Writer of “Justice”).

“Comic Book Commentary: Homage to the New Frontier” – This documentary is a nod to the fans of the New Frontier comic book. This featurette further expands the themes contained in the source material, and how these elements were truncated or evolved for the inclusion in the film. Featuring vivid imagery culled from the pages of the New Frontier comic, mixed with the commentary of Writer and Artist Darwyn Cooke, this featurette is a treat for both fans and scholars of the medium.

“Justice League Unlimited Bonus Episodes” – Bruce Timm selects three of his favorite episodes from the Justice League Unlimited animated series:

1. Dark Heart ¬ Alien invaders attempt to thwart the Justice League. The fate of the world rests on the shoulders of Ray Palmer, AKA The Atom.

2. To Another Shore – Wonder Woman learns of a plot to steal the powers of the 3,000 year-old corpse of The Viking Prince. It is up to the Justice League to make things right.

3. Task Force X – Four incarcerated villains are released from prison by Cadmus to undertake an impossible mission: steal a powerful mystic artifact from the JLU Watchtower under the noses of the League.

“Having the opportunity to take the unique work of such a legendary comic talent as Darwyn Cooke and create a small screen faithful adaptation of that style is one of the cornerstones in what we hope to develop for core and new fans alike as part of the DC Universe initiative on the Warner Premiere slate”, said Matt Bierman, Vice President Production, Warner Premiere.

“Darwyn Cooke’s New Frontier is justifiably considered a modern classic, and we at DC comics are excited to share this thrilling adaptation with the book’s legions of loyal fans. On Feb. 26, DC Universe Animated Movies will lead everyone across the New Frontier,” said Gregory Novek, Senior Vice President of Creative Affairs, DC Comics.

“Following the huge success of Superman Doomsday, we are delighted to be releasing the second DC Universe PG-13 animated movie,” said Amit Desai, WHV Vice President, Family, Animation and Sports Marketing. “Justice League: The New Frontier will certainly not disappoint fans who have been eagerly awaiting this next action-packed DC Universe installment.”

Justice League: New Frontier Marketing Support

DABEL BROTHERS OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCE DRESDEN FILES, BUTCHER TO WRITE MINISERIES – NEWSARAMA

Still can’t believe this show was canceled, it was great!!

DABEL BROTHERS OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCE DRESDEN FILES, BUTCHER TO WRITE MINISERIES – NEWSARAMA

DABEL BROTHERS OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCE DRESDEN FILES, BUTCHER TO WRITE MINISERIES

Early last month, we told you about author Jim Butcher’s announcement that his Dresden Files novels would be adapted into comic book form by the Dabel Brothers. Today, the company confirmed the news, adding that Butcher himself will write one of the upcoming miniseries.

The novel series, which was adapted for television and saw life as a
short-lived series on Sci Fi, follows Harry Blackstone Copperfield
Dresden, an investigator of the supernatural. A wizard himself, Dresden
aids the Chicago police in their investigations of cases that stretch
past their reach and into the supernatural. Dresden is no angel either,
as he is constantly watched by the White Council due to a misadventure
in his past which resulted in the death of his uncle.

The comic versions of the Dresden Files (Butcher has
written nine novels, with a tenth due in February of 2008) will be
direct adaptations of the novels, and will begin with Storm Front in mid 2008. Prior to the debut of Storm Front, Dabel Brothers will release in April, an original four-part Harry Dresden miniseries written by Butcher.

“I couldn’t be happier to see the Dresden Files
hopping the gulf to a new medium–and to one where I think they’ll have
the chance to really shine,” Butcher said. “I’ve spent considerable
portions of my life obsessed with comics. I like them, and they helped
shape my imagination as I was growing up. The action in the Dresden Files
has always been inspired by my favorite superhero titles–Spidey and
the X-men–and several facets of Dresden himself were modeled on some
of the same foundations as Peter Parker. For heaven’s sake, my online
handle has been ‘Longshot,’ after the sometime X-man, since my very
first email account.”

Adaptations of Butcher’s Dresden Files will join at least two other Dabel Brothers’ adaptations in 2008 – Dean Koontz’s Frankenstein: Prodigal Son, and George R. R. Martin’s Wild Cards. The titles will be published in conjunction with Del Rey Books, an imprint of Ballantine Books.

JOURNEY INTO COMICS: GIT’S CHANGING FORTUNES & SCHULZ – NEWSARAMA

JOURNEY INTO COMICS: GIT’S CHANGING FORTUNES & SCHULZ – NEWSARAMA

JOURNEY INTO COMICS: GIT’S CHANGING FORTUNES & SCHULZ

by Michael San Giacomo

Just when it looked possible that someday most of Marvel Comics would be available on DVD, Marvel pulled the plug.

Ray Pelosi, of the GIT Corp. which has been producing DVD’s of whole
catalogues of Marvel Comics, said they will sell off their current
stock by the end of February. That’s it, that’s the end,” he said.
“After that we are no longer permitted to sell Marvel DVDs.”

GIT’s Marvel pipeline was cut
shortly after Marvel announced Digital Comics Unlimited, which offers
more than 2,500 back issues to customers at Marvel’s website.
Subscribers pay an annual $59.88 subscription fee, or $9.99 a month for
all the comics they can view. The catch is, they can only view them as
long as they subscribe.

In addition to DVD collections of X-Men, Avengers, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four and others, Pelosi said the final Marvel products coming out in December would be Civil War — The Complete Collection and House of M — The Complete Collection.

Pelosi said though he has lost Marvel, he gained Archie. He announced
the Spring production of DVDs of Archie Comics, but was still trying to
decide how to package them.

“We may go for smaller sets, like all the Valentine’s Day issues and
specials,” he said. “Archie has been around since the 1940s and there
are too many books for one set.”

He said he would try to convince Archie to let him collect the Golden
Age Archie Comics superheroes, (then called MLJ Comics) including
titles like Zip, Blue Ribbon and Pep with characters like The Shield, Steel Sterling, The Comet, The Hangman, Black Hood and Mr. Justice.

He is also interested in releasing a DVD of the Silver Age Archie superheroes, starting with Joe Simon and Jack Kirby’s The Fly and Private Strong and including the various incarnations of The Mighty Crusaders.

Personally, I’d love to have all those comics on DVD since they are not
only horribly expensive, but very hard to find. Not as many people
saved Steel Sterling compared with those who horded Superman and
Batman. I have a few of the MLJ comics and all of the Silver Age
books…somewhere. It would be great to read them again for those Jerry
Siegel stories and art by Rich Buckler, Gray Morrow, Dick Ayers, Steve
Ditko, Carmine Infantino and dozens of others.

I plan to drop a line to Archie Comics at http://www.archiecomics.com/talkback.html begging them to release the books. If you agree, let ‘em know.

Pelosi said he has so far been unsuccessful in convincing DC to open
their massive vaults for reproduction, but is always looking for
suggestions.

Marvel’s decision might put a slight crimp in the plans for Fred
Wright, Ph.D., of the English Department of Ursuline College a bit east
of Cleveland.

Wright is conducting a survey, via Cleveland area comic shops, to determine if anybody is reading the things.

“I am conducting research on how the entire runs of comic book titles on DVD-ROM (such as The Amazing Spider-Man
from GIT) might affect the hobby of comic collecting,” he said in his
survey. “As a comic book collector/reader, you might be able to assist
me in the research by answering the following questions.”

The survey is a simple set of six questions like: have you ever read a
comic in electronic format? How does it compare to reading a comic
book? If you have purchased a collection, would you buy another?

And the pithy question, “Would you consider a comic book collection in electronic format to be truly a comic book collection?”

Hmmmm. Good question.

( Wright said anyone interested in filling out the survey, or who has thoughts on DVD comics, can contact him at wredfright@yahoo.com)

This boils down to what comic collections actually are and why we have them. As I said, I have all the Mighty Crusaders
comics somewhere among my tens of thousands of unsorted comics in
boxes. At least I think I do. Suppose I needed them for some reference,
or just wanted to read them, it could take me weeks to find it. But if
I had the Archie Silver Age DVD, I could see the books in minutes.

Now that Marvel offers this service, we can even more easily track down
a single story even if it not among the DVD sets, assuming it’s among
the 2,500 offered.

PEANUTS

I just finished Charles Schulz and Peanuts by David Michaelis (slow reader, I know) and it has given me a greater appreciation for the man and his work.

It also made me dig out the wonderful Fantagraphics collections of the strips.

For those of us who grew up reading Peanuts, and that’s just about everyone born since 1950, the strip was an important part of our lives.

The life of Charles Schulz reminds me of a line from an old Lou Reed
song in which he told his ever-struggling father, “You’re not a poor
man anymore. I hope you realize that before you die.”

Michaelis’ book depicts Schulz as forever unsatisfied, a man always
striving for something better, a man as sad as Charlie Brown. One of
the more touching passages in the book comes after Schulz was diagnosed
with terminal cancer and after he has retired from the strip. He says
wistfully that “The little guy never got to kick the football.”

Schulz was one of the most successful cartoonists in history, parlaying
his strip into a billion dollar industry that continues long after his
death on Feb. 12, 2000, the day before his final Sunday cartoon
announcing his retirement was published.

Schulz’s son, Monte, has criticized the book as inaccurate, but it’s
impossible to know if he’s correct or just a beloved son reacting to a
sometimes uncomplimentary book about his father.

If Monte believes anyone would think less of his father because of his
depiction as sometimes depressed and always unfulfilled, he’s wrong.
The fact that Schulz was able to chain himself to his drawing table for
five decades and produce all those amazing cartoons in spite of those
emotional issues, makes him even more impressive.

Virgin Comics gets new Perspective on multimedia

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Virgin Comics will partner with
CGI-house Perspective Studios to create new intellectual properties for
comics, mobile, games platforms and movies.

Virgin Comics, which is part of Richard Branson’s global empire,
recently scored a cross-media success when its popular “Ramayan 3392
A.D.” comic book series was licensed by Sony Online Entertainment for a
new massively multiplayer online (MMO) role-playing game.

Perspective comes to the partnership after developing a solid
reputation in gaming, providing animation for popular franchises such
as Rockstar Games’ “Grand Theft Auto” and Ubisoft’s “Ghost Recon.”
Perspective operates one of the East Coast’s largest and most
sophisticated motion-capture facilities, in Glen Cove, N.Y., and will
soon open a new studio in Santa Monica, Calif.

THE KNOWN WORLD(S) – THE LIST OF DC UNIVERSES – NEWSARAMA

Duh, Earth-31 has to be the Dark Knight Returns universe, hence the jellybean comment and the worry that Brainiac was still alive.

THE KNOWN WORLD(S) – THE LIST OF DC UNIVERSES – NEWSARAMA

THE KNOWN WORLD(S) – THE LIST OF DC UNIVERSES

The end of DC’s 52 series left the DC Universe a multiverse again. Thanks to the flappingof a butterfly’s wings (or something like it) the single DC Universe
left after Crisis on Infinite Earths and fractured slightly in Infinite Crisis was once again split into many. Well, not exactly “many” – exactly 52.

Previously numbering in the hundreds (and added to whenever a Silver Age writer needed a new one, generally speaking), the multiverse of DC has been winnowed down to a more manageable number.

But what are they for sure? DC Executive Editor Dan DiDio has said that a full list resides in his office, or at least as full as list as possible, as not all of the universes have been named or described, and as DiDio has said, he and the rest of DC Editorial are slow to name them all, but rather slowly explore the worlds in Countdown to Final Crisis, its associated spinoffs, and later projects.

So – what are they? DC Comics has provided Newsarama with the current listing of the earths that currently make up the DC Multiverse. “First appearance” means first appearance post-creation in 52 #52.
And yes, many of the worlds are very familiar to previous, Pre-Crisis multiple earths, or Elseworlds stories, but DC has maintained that these worlds are not perfect recreations of those worlds. These are new
worlds that share the same characteristics.

The known earths are:

Earth-2: Home of the original Justice Society (first appearance 52 #52 – this earth’s Superman and Power Girl are missing)
Earth-3: The Crime Society’s world (first appearance 52 #52)
Earth-4: Home of the Charlton characters (a.k.a. – the Watchmen-esque world) (first appearance 52 #52)
Earth-5: Home of the Fawcett (Shazam) characters (first appearance 52 #52)
Earth-8: World of Lord Havok and the Extremists – called Angor by its natives (Countdown #29)
Earth-9: Tangent Universe (upcoming in Tangent: Superman’s Reign #1)
Earth-10: Home of the Quality (Freedom Fighters, Uncle Sam, the original Ray, etc) characters (first appearance 52 #52)
Earth-11: World of reversed genders ( Arena #1 and The Search For Ray
Palmer: Superwoman/ Batwoman #1
)
Earth-12: The Next Generation, beyond Batman (i.e., Batman Beyond?) (Arena #1)
Earth-13: World of dark and arcane heroes ( Arena #1)
Earth-15: World of heroes realized (Donna Troy as Wonder Woman; Jason Todd as Batman) (Countdown #30 – the earth of this universe was destroyed in Countdown #24)
Earth-16: Home of the Super-Sons ( Arena #1)
Earth-17: A post WWIII, apocalyptic universe (first appearance 52 #52)
Earth-18: World of the Elseworld’s Justice Riders ( Arena #1)
Earth-19: World of Elseworld’s Gotham by Gaslight (The Search For Ray
Palmer: Gotham By Gaslight #1
)
Earth-21: World of Elseworld’s New Frontier ( Arena #1)
Earth-22: Elseworld’s Kingdom Come Universe (first appearance 52 #52)
Earth-26: Universe of Captain Carrot and the Amazing Zoo Crew (Captain Carrot
And The Final Ark #1
)
Earth-30: World of Elseworld’s Superman: Red Son (Countdown #32)
Earth-32: World of Elseworld’s Batman: Darkest Knight (Arena #1)
Earth-34: World of Elseworld’s Amazonia ( Arena #1)
Earth-37: World of Elseworld’s Thrillkiller ( Arena #1)
Earth-40: World of Elseworld’s Liberty Files ( Arena #1)
Earth-43: World of Elseworld’s Batman: Red Rain (The Search For Ray Palmer:
Red Rain #1
)
Earth-48: Forerunner’s world (Countdown #46)
Earth-50: Wildstorm Universe (first seen 52 #52)

To date, it’s unclear as to what the difference between “Earth-1” and “New Earth” is, as Rip Hunter mentioned in 52 #52 that were separate realities. Also, the world of the Atomic Knights (classic Silver Age) was shown to be Earth-17 in the same issue.

Oh, and Earth-31? It’s shown in the preview to Arena #1.

Okay – so what’s not been listed yet? A few that caught our eye…

Vertigo. Yeah, yeah – it’s not part of the DC Universe proper. That line’s been used at cons by DC staffers, and you know what? Forget it. It is. It may be Earth-13, but come on…let’s see that as official.

Over in Action Comics, there’s a Legion of Super-Heroes running around that’s a continuation of the original, Adventure Comics #247 Legion. If the Legion that Supergirl is currently hanging with is the future of “New Earth,” where is this other Legion from? Sure, there will be claims of an alternate timeline within the “New Earth” Universe, but then we have to call in the theoretical physicists (or Grant Morrison) to tell us the difference between an alternate timeline contained within a universe and a wholly “different universe”
that was created by Mr. Mind altering time over and over again to create new universes.

And hey – as this list is very reliant on DC’s Elseworlds stories over the years to build entire universes on, where’s the All-Star universe, and the Dark Knight Returns/Strikes Again universe (although that might be Earth-31, given Superman’s haircut…)?

Is there an America’s Best Comics universe?

The Amalgam universe?

Milestone?

Which future is Kamadi a part of? Lady Quark? Dark Angel?

Is there a new Earth-Prime, where DC superheroes only exist as comic book stories?

Superman & Batman: Generations? JLA: The Nail?

And jillions more.

So many questions – 52 answers.

Superman & Batman: Generations? JLA: The Nail?

And jillions more.

So many questions – 52 answers.

THE Z-CULT FM SAGA: TALKING TO SERJ & ZOG – UPDATED
Updated 11.26.07 – 4:30 pm EST

In an updated post on Z-Cult FM, it appears that the site will shortly take down all Marvel trackers on their site. “Serj” posted:

Every day I seem to have to announce some news here but here is a new news item for our site.

First Marvel News:
Yesterday Marvel contacted us further in response to our email to them. They provided a direct phone number to we could contact them directly and continue on our communication. We phone them up today first thing (US Time) and enjoyed a chat with them.

They have now followed our removal process kinda but Z-Cult FM and Marvel have decided the following:
* We will remove all Marvel comics from our trackers.
* We asked for 7 days to remove the books from our trackers (due to time it takes to delete them all) and they agreed.

So we would like to thank Marvel for following our removal policy (like all other publishers have done in past) and not going down the legal route once again.

So 7 days from now there will be no Marvel comics on our website.

We asked marvel if they wanted to say anything as the reason for the removal to our users and they mentioned they are doing it because of their new download site.

We won’t be providing links back to Marvel’s new download service like we have down for SLG etc because I feel what Marvel is offering is NOT a download service but more like a preview site. The users who purchase to read the books can only read them, they can not store them for a later date. So I do not class this as a download service for digital comics so will not be linking to it. If in future Marvel add a download feature to it we will link to it and support the site 100%.

Marvel have also stated their site is a work in progress so if anyone has any comments or suggestions be sure to contact them or start a thread on this site and they will read them.

New 30 Day Policy on DC Comics
DC Comics have not contacted us further about the issues over the last few days, but the staff of Z-Cult FM have agreed among ourselves we find it best if we start a new 30 day policy on all new DC comics.

So as of today no DC Comic publications will be allowed on our site until least 30 days after they have been available in the shops. Any comics uploaded before this ban can remain but any comics that are uploaded since this ban was posted will be removed and the uploader reminded of our new policy.

I must stress the following points before any people read this or news sites pick it up:
* This 30 day ban is only for DC Comic books for time being.
* DC Comics has not replied to our response that we made on Friday.
* Z-Cult FM Staff have come up with this ban.
* This does not come from DC Comics or any other publishers.

I just wanted to clear that up so no confusion is started like the SLG issue that news sites picked up on.

More proof of Comcast port blocking

How to play the Comcast word game

Clearly, there is something going on (see: wrong) with Comcast’s definition of unrestricted Internet access (see: Comcast/BitTorrent interference lawsuit). They say they are not blocking anything, and in fact, they are telling the truth. So if you call Comcast to complain about a service problem; do not use that verbiage. If you do, and you are persistent, they can and will will deem you a disgruntled or uncooperative caller and ignore you.

What you need to do is play their word game.

Their word game is not to call the teakettle black – but to say that it is less reflective to light due to its dark color. I.e.,
they aren’t blocking ports outright – they are hindering normal
communication or doing something to affect it in a way that causes it
to fail.

By using this type of wording and phrasing, I was able to get
Comcast to admit that they block ports – something they are currently
denying in court and normally never admit to. See below for the quote I
got from a tech support representative.

However, in case you were wondering, I was not calling to complain about BitTorrent. I
was calling to complain about their interference with other protocols;
in my case, it was RDP for use with Windows Remote Desktop, as well as
DameWare. These protocols/services have begun to be
“interfered with” for me in the past couple of months, although they
used to work flawlessly. Now they do not work across the
Comcast network at all. Being a network administrator and having
knowledge that nothing has changed on my home or work networks, I knew
the problem had to be with the man in the middle: Comcast.

Kevin Kanarski, working as a Lotus Notes messaging engineer,
observed that Comcast is indeed interfering with other network
applications. In the case of Lotus Notes, Comcast is
sending a RST (reset) packet to both the client and server in the
connection intentionally killed emails with large attachments.

So, in this case, Comcast is sending false packets to the client
and/or server in order to reset the connection (TCP packet with an RST
flag). RST-reset connections are immediately closed without without any
acknowledgment/confirmation handshake regarding the request between the
client and server. My knowledge of TCP/IP protocol operation is
limited, but this is my understanding of the condition that the RST
packets cause.

Unbelievably, this is the crux of a man-in-the-middle_attack, and it’s being perpetrated by my own ISP!

However, as you can see: this is “interfering”, not blocking. And this is how Comcast is playing their game.

If you do have a complaint about connectivity issues
with Comcast, their regular support cannot (or will not) help you.
First, they won’t help you if it involves any technology that they
don’t support or have an obligation to support. Second,
they will declare that “Comcast does not block ports”. However, they
can (if you are lucky enough and they do not simply stonewall you)
refer you to contact abuse@comcast.net. Yep, that’s right; the abuse department: The Comcast abuse department is in control of port blocking. To support this, here is a quote I finagled out of a tech support rep:

That department does not only deal with abuse, they
deal with any blocking of port numbers, or any problems with connection
or email port number blocking.

Wait a second here – So, Comcast has a department that deals with port blocking – ergo Comcast is port blocking! Oh my stars and garters…

But this is just a start, and it’s where your and my fun begins, because abuse@comcast.net
doesn’t get read by humans. If you send an email to that address,
you’ll receive a boilerplate auto-reply e-mail response with links to
common Comcast customer issue – although none of them will involve
anything relating to port blocking/interference problems.
