KEITH GIFFEN/DC AGREE TO EXCLUSIVE CONTRACT – NEWSARAMA
UPDATED: KEITH GIFFEN/DC AGREE TO EXCLUSIVE CONTRACT
Solidifying
their relationship with a creator they’ve relied on heavily to
contribute a consistent visual tone to their last two weekly-shipping,
multi-creative team series 52 and Countdown to Final Crisis, DC Comics has signed writer/artist Keith Giffen to an exclusive contract, the publisher has confirmed for Newsarama.Although DC does not disclose details of creator contracts, the deal appears to be for two years.
The relationship seems natural fit for both the creator and publisher.
Giffen has been a long-time creative voice for DC, creating the
characters Lobo and Ambush Bug for them and contributing to seminal
runs of Legion of Superheroes and Justice League as both a writer and artist in the 80’s and 90’s. Recent projects have included creating/writing the current Blue Beetle series, and writing the Wildstorm series Midnighter and the DCU limited series 52 Aftermath: The Four Horseman. While the majority of his work the last several years has been with DC,
the prolific Giffen has worked with numerous other publishers during
that time, including Boom! Studios, Tokyopop, Desperado/Image, and of
course Marvel Comics. Giffen was the lead writer on last year’s Annihilation event, credited with injecting new life to Marvel’s cosmic characters, and now the subject of a current follow-up event. While it’s assumed this DC contract will preclude any new Marvel work
during its terms, many DC and Marvel exclusive contracts in recent
years have allowed creators to pursue projects at smaller and/or
independent publishers. This may be a moot point in this case, however,
as Giffen has indicated to Newsarama his work with DC will keep him so
busy over the terms of the new contract he won’t have time to pursue
other projects.Asked to comment on the new exclusive deal, DC Universe Executive
Editor Dan DiDio told Newsarama (tongue planted firmly in-cheek), “We
wanted to do the comic book industry a favor and limit Keith’s
craziness to just one company.”
