MEGA-CON ’08: BILLY TUCCI TALKS SGT. ROCK

Report by Steve Ekstrom

Friday at MegaCon in Orlando, Florida, creator Billy Tucci hosted his first ever, non-Shi related panel — discussing his work on a future Sgt. Rock limited series from DC, Sgt. Rock: The Lost Battalion. Tucci’s work on this mini was originally announced last year at the Baltimore Comic-Con.
The limited series will take place in October, 1944 in and around the
Vosges Mountains in France during the historic rescue mission of a lost
battalion including Sgt. Rock and Easy Company. The story opens at
Omaha Beach on D-Day.

Only days after returning from Normandy, an emotional Tucci engaged an
intimate audience with pictures and stories of his research of those
areas. Also, he has participated in World War II reenactments—acting as
a field reporter for both Allied and German forces. Tucci took over
1000 photos for reference material for his future project.

When asked about the inspiration involving this new project, Tucci
said, “I was inclined to tell the story of the American dream—and how
it is bigger than the government.” Not only does this story include the
trials and tribulations of the Nazi-encircled ‘Lost Battalion’ but
their rescuers as well. Tucci explained, “It gets a reader into a story
to see fiction laid over history.”

It
is common knowledge that Tucci himself is a retired member of the U.S.
Army and the New York and Rhode Island National Guard. He added, “I
love the opportunity to do justice to the American Armed Forces.”

During the panel, a number of fans personally thanked Tucci for his
efforts to represent soldiers who, like their family, served during
World War II. In response, Tucci said, “I want to move people,” and
that he had no intentions of being preachy or one-sided in regards to
the portrayal of American military heroism. When asked who he hoped his
primary audience would be, Tucci stated, “I want this to be for the
American people—so they can know both what Allied forces did and how
thankful the people of France truly are.”

In his closing, he stated, “I hope that this book will make people thank at least one veteran.”

An announcement regarding the release date of Sgt. Rock: The Lost Battalion is still pending from DC Comics.

In the coming weeks, Steve will be talking with Billy Tucci about
his experiences abroad as he researched for the upcoming Sgt. Rock
project.
