[Press] BLUEWATER INKS DEAL WITH LIONSGATE FOR COMIC SERIES
BLUEWATER INKS DEAL WITH LIONSGATE FOR COMIC SERIES
BELLINGHAM, WA— October 27, 2008— in 2009, Bluewater and Lionsgate will be developing a line of comic books based on the cult/ horror favorite films “Leprechaun” and “Warlock”. After their successful series “Vincent Price Presents” Bluewater delivers more horror to comics.
“Working with Lionsgate on this end is like coming back full circle for me. I worked on the marketing for “Leprechaun 4: In Space”, said Bluewater publisher Darren G. Davis. “I loved this little character and have always wanted to do something with him. As for “Warlock”, this was another cult film that I enjoyed, so having this opportunity to partner with Lionsgate again is going to great”.
The “Warlock comic series is described as, The Warlock is on a mission to destroy a book that contains a spell which imprisoned six other Warlocks. If the book manages to be destroyed, the dangerous Warlocks would be released back into the world free to cause chaos and destruction. It’s up to a rag-tag group of people to prevent the Warlock from carrying out his plan.
“Warlock will appeal to both fans of the franchise and readers who know nothing about the horror series”, said writer Nick Lyons. The book will be drawn by Jacob Bear and colored by John Hunt. Matt Bellisle will be doing all the alternate covers to this title.
“Leprechaun” will be written by another Lionsgate alum Zach Hunchar, who just finished writing Insane Jane for Bluewater. “Leprechaun” is an immensely popular horror franchise and I’m excited about expanding the mythos. It takes two of my favorite things … Ireland and horror. I’m extremely excited to continue to explore the things that scare me and entertain me. I’m very happy Bluewater chose me for this task.”
“Leprechaun” the comic series is a tale of revenge and mayhem. This is the tale of Lubdan, the king and sole survivor of the Leprechaun. The last of the Leprechauns! A treasure dealer stumbles across his pot of gold and steals it. In this modern age, he finds buyers all over the planet through on-line auctions. Iubdan finds the thief after the gold is shipped to humans across the globe. Unbeknownst to Iubdan, the Cluracan, a war-like race intent on genocide, helped the human find the gold. A new curse is discovered that weakens Iubdan while he is not in possession of the gold and will eventually kill him if he does not recover them all in enough time. He quickly realizes he cannot locate the gold without help. The treasure dealer’s last sale was to a computer expert, who agrees to help Lubdan, in exchange for his life. Together, they race against time to learn of the gold’s locations. Lubdan’s quest takes him all over the planet, across time and space. Battling greed, the genocidal Cluracan and new mystical adversaries, Lubdan must save all life to save himself.
Kris Carter will draw “Leprechaun”. And Micheal Kingston will be writing the 2nd story arch.

Alan Martin: Tank Girl Resurrected
By Nicole Powers
Oct 24, 2008Hollywood nearly killed Tank Girl. Dodgy movies have a way of doing that to people. Tank Girl’s creators, writer Alan Martin and artist Jamie Hewlett, would be the first to say the 1995 big screen incarnation of the cult comic strip character, which they had zero control over, wasn’t all that it should have been. Indeed they might even say it was a “shit sandwich” (well, actually, Martin did). Fortunately, Tank Girl’s superhuman, and her fuck you spirit would never allow a bunch of scummy film execs and industry cheese weasels to have the last word. Down but not out, after a hiatus of over a decade, she put her Tank Boots back on, and kicked, screamed and farted her way back from near oblivion, with a little help from Martin.
In the process of documenting Tank Girl’s past for a best-of book called The Cream of Tank Girl (out October 2008), Martin found a renewed passion for his foul-mouthed, mutant kangaroo-humping friend. Original draftsman Jamie Hewlett may have moved on to pastures new with Damon Albarn and their virtual Gorillaz band, but Tank Girl has found new pen pals to roughhouse with.
With a slew of fresh Tank Girl adventures already in print, in the bag, and on the horizon, Martin and his badly behaved progeny are smashing (”Sleesh! Plock! Glump!”) their way into one of their most prolific periods ever. We sat down for a long distance chat with Martin, and took a gander at what the future holds for Tank Girl.

Star Wars: The Old Republic, being developed and published by BioWare and LucasArts, represents an innovative approach to interactive entertainment, featuring immersive storytelling, dynamic combat and intelligent companion characters.
In Star Wars: The Old Republic, players will explore an age thousands of years before the rise of Darth Vader when war between the Old Republic and the Sith Empire divides the galaxy. Players can choose to play as Jedi, Sith, or a variety of other classic Star Wars roles, defining their personal story and determining their path down the light or dark side of the Force. Along the way, players will befriend courageous companions who will fight at their side or possibly betray them, based on the players’ actions. We knew that the developer capable of working with us to deliver an engrossing story with a fully-realized online world was BioWare.”
“Traditionally, massively multiplayer online games have been about three basic gameplay pillars - combat, exploration and character progression,” said Dr. Ray Muzyka, Co-Founder and General Manager/CEO of BioWare and General Manager/Vice President of Electronic Arts Inc., “In Star Wars: The Old Republic, we’re fusing BioWare’s heritage of critically-acclaimed storytelling with the amazing pedigree of Lucasfilm and LucasArts, and adding a brand-new fourth pillar to the equation – story. At the same time, we will still deliver all the fun features and activities that fans have come to expect in a AAA massively multiplayer online game. To top it all off, Star Wars: The Old Republic is set in a very exciting, dynamic period in the Star Wars universe.”

Our goal is to offer players an emotionally rewarding experience that combines the traditional elements of MMO gameplay with innovations in story and character development.”
Additional details on Star Wars: The Old Republic features, gameplay and release date will be announced at a later time. For more information about Star Wars: The Old Republic and to sign up for future product updates, please visit www.StarWarsTheOldRepublic.com.

[Press] ComicBase and Atomic Avenue are Back Up!
We’re back!
For the past hundred hours or so, things have been mighty rocky in ComicBase and Atomic Avenue land. The good news (and it’s very good news!) is that we’re fully back in business now, and should be pushing this week’s update to ComicBase shortly.
The trouble began when our main web server suffered a terrible and agonizing death shortly before noon on Thursday (just as Pete, on his big family vacation, was in Florida getting ready to board Space Mountain in Disney World). It was like Supermani> #75 all over again, including the part where a number of clones (backups) and heroes stepped forward to try to fill the big guy’s shoes.
After a 43-part “Crisis on Infinite Servers” story arc with twists and turns too numerous and convoluted to mention (but in which no chief characters died, and where even the special Platinum Edition of the final issue seems doomed to barely fetch cover price) we finally got things back to normal this morning.
Thanks very much for bearing with us during this time, and if you need any additional help with weird events that occurred during the unfortunate, “Crisis” storyline, please call or email support at 408/266-6883 or support@comicbase.com.
Excelsior!
-The ComicBase and Atomic Avenue teams.
All the best!
-Pete

N.B. artists race to complete 24-page comic books in 24 hours
The Canadian PressFREDERICTON — It was an exercise in discipline and creativity, but for the local comic book artists participating in this year’s 24-Hour Comics Day, it was more about reconnecting with a timeless art form.
The event, known as 24-Hour Comics Day, is an annual challenge for cartoonists from around the world to create a 24-page comic book from scratch in 24 hours.
In New Brunswick, the event ran from 2 p.m. Saturday to 2 p.m. Sunday at the Delta Fredericton Hotel.Co-organizer Mike Campbell said that despite some tense clock-watching, each of the 15 participants managed to beat the deadline.
He said the event is a fun way for artists and enthusiasts to test their limits under pressure.
‘‘We had what I consider our best turnout yet,’’ said Campbell.‘‘This year, we had a lot of people finish their 24 pages early, which has honestly never happened before; usually it’s right down to the wire, but I guess people were on their game this year.’’
Campbell said he’s pleased with how much the event has grown since signing on in 2005.
‘‘We fully expect the event to be even larger next year,’’ he said.He said returning participants have developed some savvy methods for saving time.
‘‘For the story that I worked on, there were a few pages that were just completely black with an alarm clock being the only image that you can see,’’ said Campbell.‘‘It’s almost like a puzzle, rather than creating something that’s Pulitzer prize-winning. It’s more about meeting the challenge of getting those 24 pages done on time.’’
Monique MacNaughton, who has been illustrating comic books for almost 20 years, said this was her second year involved with 24-Hour Comics Day.
‘‘The main thing that I love about this art form is that you can fill in with pictures what you can’t with words,’’ she said.

McG For Terminator Salvation
By Fred Topel
Sep 1, 2008McG still has some childhood issues to work out. The director is a successful Hollywood mogul with several TV series currently on-air and a diverse resume of films. Yet he still gets sensitive when people make fun of his name.
He got a bit of reassurance when he showed footage of his latest work, Terminator Salvation, at San Diego’s Comic Con this summer. Scenes of future war zones with new Skynet robots battling the human resistance got cheers from the fans and showed him he was on the right track. Still, he brought up the name thing randomly.
“I mean, I remember when I was on Superman and people were kicking the shit out of me and saying, ‘What kind of guy calls himself McG?’” McG said to a press conference after his Comic Con session. “It’s the privilege of the public to just do that, not know that McG is short for McGinty and I’ve been called that since the day I was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan. There’s nothing Hollywood about it. It’s the function of being poor and having three Joes in one household so they didn’t call me Joe, they called me McG, short for McGinty, my mother’s maiden name. But of course, as I say we live in a shorthand society, people do what they got to do.”
Such defensiveness may be unwarranted as people seem eager for his take on the Terminator franchise. Salvation picks up John Connor (Christian Bale) fighting the machines in the post-war future, but the focus is on a new character, Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington). We will also come across familiar faces like Kyle Reese (Anton Yelchin) in the story.

Comic Collector Live To Begin Charging A Software Subscription Fee
Well this will kill this app I bet. I tired it a while back and didn’t really like the interface, plus I already had too much invested in ComicBase (who look to be having issues with their website at the moment).

Zachary Quinto’s Trek To Fame
By Fred Topel
Oct 8, 2008Often when an actor does press for one project, there’s really another big project that people really want to hear about. Harrison Ford’s last several movies were sort of excuses to get scoops on Indy IV. Zachary Quinto is in the rare position to have two equally anticipated projects. Trekkies and general sci-fi fans want to see his take on the young Spock in J.J. Abrams’ new Star Trek, but also want to know what’s up with Sylar in the new season of Heroes.
Spock is an icon dating back to the ’60s and Sylar has certainly earned a place in modern pop culture. Quinto could have two defining roles on his hands, one hero and one villain.
“I think there are elements of the characters that echo each other but I think they echo each other from very different, opposite ends of the spectrum,” notes Quinto. “Each of the characters employs a stillness and a rich internal point of view that informs the way that they behave and the way that they relate to people around them. It’s great fun to have characters that are rich and that are full of challenges and full of rewards. Both of these characters are clearly that. So as an actor, I don’t really approach a character as to whether or not it’s good or bad. I just approach a character as to where it lives in me. I think for numerous reasons both of these very different characters both find life in me.”
Both Heroes and Star Trek plotlines are closely guarded secrets, yet Quinto found ways to analyze each without giving away spoilers, though fans will have to wait until May 2009 to find out exactly how Spock met Kirk and beamed aboard the Enterprise.

Paul Pope: Hope Beyond Comics
By Jay Hathaway
Oct 12, 2008Paul Pope has built a reputation as a visionary artist and writer on the strength of some of the most acclaimed graphic novels of the past decade, including Heavy Liquid and 100%. His multiple-Eisner-winning story, Batman: Year 100, immersed the dark knight in the same kind of near-future dystopia that makes his creator-owned work so thrilling. If you saw The Dark Knight this summer, you saw a motorcycle that looks remarkably similar to the one Paul designed for Year 100.
That’s not the only place Paul’s work has come to life outside of the printed page. Earlier this year, he was picked by DKNY Jeans to design a line of men’s clothes for their fall collection. His original characters are also entering the third dimension as vinyl toys from Kidrobot. As if all of this isn’t enough, we still haven’t seen the main event. THB, the self-published sci-fi epic that launched Paul’s career, is drawing to a close after more than a decade. Both the faithful and the uninitiated are in for a treat in 2010, when THB will finally be widely available — and greatly expanded — in a multi-volume series (Total THB). And we’re not done yet: just before he releases Total THB, Paul is kicking the door in with a new story called Battling Boy, about a kid hero who takes on a gang of mythical monsters.
Suicide Girls chatted with Paul about all of this and more.
