Wizard World/Chicago Comic Con On The Way!

Posted By Mike on July 23, 2009

Though we know everyone’s mind is currently on SDCC, the ForceCast’s Jimmy Mac offers up an alternative for those convention fans not able to hit the west coast:

“Wizard World Chicago is only 2 weeks away. It all takes place at The Donald E Stephens Convention Center by Chicago’s O’Hare Airport Aug 6-9. This is a nice alternative for midwesterners who could not attend SDCC. There will be several Star Wars panels.

FRIDAY 8/6
-Jack Kirby Room 5p-6p – Clone Wars Roundtable

SATURDAY 8/7
- Wil Eisner Room 2p-3p – Ray Park Q&A
- Jack Kirby Room 3p-4p – Billy Dee Williams Q&A
- Jack Kirby Room 4p-5p – Star Wars Panel

PLUS, there will be plenty of autograph opportunities with a dozen Star Wars actors in attendance:

Ray Park, Billy Dee Williams, Orli Shoshan, Daniel Logan, Peter Mayhew, Jeremy Bulloch, Maria de Aragon, Dave Barclay, Tom Kane, Jerome Blake, Richard LeParmentier, and Doug Wangler

AND, Steve Sansweet will be a Special Guest and Tom Hodges will be taking his usual spot in the Artist Alley

Steve Sansweet will be doing a Star Wars presentation (it could be the Sat 4pm panel) – I will confirm when soon!

They are apparently transitioning the name of the event from Wizard World Chicago (which is what they always called it) to Chicago Comic Con.”

Thanks to Jimmy for the heads up! Click here for more details at the convention’s site.

AICN Exclusive Confirmed: Sam Raimi is going to direct WORLD OF WARCRAFT!!!

Hey folks, Harry here for one last night in Austin before flying down to Geek Mecca aka Comic Con. The great thing about Comic Con is it shakes a lot of juicy fruit from the tree of movie coolness – and we get tons of material, but not much of it is exclusive. As it is a pretty intense rat race there of all us online types chasing the same stories. Well…

This is one of those exclusives that untold geek hours have been spent trying to get to the truth of the matter. I first heard this 3 weeks ago, and spent a lot of time trying to nail this story down. And we finally have.

The last major update that we had on AICN on the WORLD OF WARCRAFT came from Moriarty here, back in 2007 The last major bit I heard was a rumor that Uwe Boll was offering Blizzard untold tonnages of gold left crowns of undetermined origin to direct – and that allegedly BLIZZARD laughed his ass out of the place. In Mori’s piece we were supposed to get this movie in 2009 with a $100 million budget. With LEGENDARY’s main man telling BLIZZCON that it’d be over that figure. And there was some concept art.

Well, I don’t have concept art. I don’t have the firm release date, but I do know who is directing the WORLD OF WARCRAFT film and that is Sam Raimi. It will come out in trades later this week or next. But you can take this one to the bank. Sam is going to make a huge budget fantasy bit of unfuckingimaginable coolness – and it will be yanked from the WORLD OF WARCRAFT.

Now – isn’t that the sort of Awesome we’re supposed to get to kick start Comic Con with? I think so.

I really think this is going to be amazing. How about you?

Looks like Legendary rushed out their Press Release – as Variety posted this story by Michael Fleming about an hour and a half after mine. It is planned to shoot after SPIDER-MAN 4

THE FLASH

As announced late last night, Geoff Johns has been hired on as a producer on a feature film based on “The Flash.” The lengthy Hollywood Reporter article which revealed Johns’s involvement also details a reorganization of DC properties in development at Warner Bros and the involvement of writers Grant Morrison and Marv Wolfman in other projects. Johns has also worked up a new treatment for “The Flash.”

IRON MAN 2

Marvel Studios announced the film has wrapped principle photography on Saturday. “The next step for us is beginning the post production process which is extensive and filled with its own set of challenges,” said producer Kevin Feige. Meanwhile, Superhero Hype found an New York Post interview with actress Leslie Bibb from a month back where she mentioned her reporter character from the first film,

THE GREEN HORNET

Seth Rogen is confident in the film, according to Sci Fi Wire. “To me we haven’t had a Kato since April, and we’re looking [for a new Kato],” Rogen told reportes on Saturday. Despite this, he believes the film will deliver something new. “We’re not trying to make what they would probably consider to be a 100 percent safe version of a movie like this,” he said.

Starring Seth Rogen, release date: July 9, 2010

RED

That same Hollywood Reporter article on DC Comics film projects also notes the Warren Ellis miniseries has been optioned as a feature outside the Warner Bros. Gates. “In a rare example of a film project that has ventured off the Warners reservation, DC has set up ‘Red,’ a spy thriller to star Bruce Willis, at Summit,” states the article.

Release date: TBA

LOBO

Sci Fi Wire spoke with producer Joel Silver about the long gestating project. “”I think we can do it. We’ve got a script we like,” said Silver. Currently, Sci Fi Wire notes, the project is aiming at a PG-13 rating. “I think we’ve done it that way, but I love it. I’ve just wanted to make it for a long time, and I think it’s a great character, a great guy,” the producer explained.

Lantern

Ryan Reynolds has landed the coveted role of “Green Lantern,” getting the starring role in Warner Bros.’ live-action film based on the DC Comics hero.

Martin Campbell will direct. The studio is still working on the picture’s budget, but production is expected to begin in January.

The news caps off a memorable summer for Reynolds, who played Deadpool in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” a performance that prompted Fox to begin development on a spinoff film. Reynolds followed that by starring opposite Sandra Bullock in the romantic comedy “The Proposal,” which crossed the $100 million mark this week.

Warners and Campbell chose Reynolds, who vied for the superhero role along with “The Hangover” star Bradley Cooper and Jared Leto. The momentum built for Reynolds in the last week, as he was the only actor whose option was extended.

Greg Berlanti wrote the script with Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green. Donald DeLine will produce with Berlanti. Reynolds’ reps at UTA are working out his deal.

The actor will next star in “Buried,” a dark indie drama that will begin filming shortly in Barcelona with Spanish director Rodrigo Cortes. Reynolds will play a civilian contractor who is kidnapped in Iraq and awakes in a coffin, struggling against time to coordinate a rescue even though he doesn’t know where he’s buried in the desert.

A week later, Busch still upset about Daytona crash
Busch said he got “dumped”, punishments are needed

JOLIET, Ill. — Tony Stewart said he and Kyle Busch are on the same page regarding the last lap crash at Daytona, but to hear Busch’s comments Thursday at Chicagoland Speedway, they aren’t even reading the same book.

Busch managed to stifle much of any harbored anger left over from the wreck, but declared he was “dumped” by Stewart and that NASCAR should implement a rule to deter such actions; actions that he said are becoming all too common in restrictor plate racing at tracks such as Daytona International Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway.

Busch was leading the Coke Zero 400 and tried to block Stewart twice but on the second attempt Busch made contact with the front of Stewart’s No. 14 machine sending the No. 18 hard into the wall allowing Stewart to take the win.

A week later, Busch attempted to take an apathetic position on the matter; initially at least.

“I really don’t have feelings, so it really doesn’t mean a whole lot. I thank him for I guess checking on me to see if I was alive,” Busch said.

Stewart, who openly regretted how Saturday night’s race ended, called Busch on Tuesday and said the two drivers shared, what he thought to be, an amicable 30-minute phone conversation.

From his words Friday, Busch’s feelings may have changed since their conversation.

“If I’m ever second I normally finish second,” he said. “If I’m leading I guess I’m getting wrecked. It seems to me like I don’t know how to win restrictor plate races.”

Busch went further to say that NASCAR should take action. (Continued)

“NASCAR can take a step in looking at it and if the second place driver dumps — quote unquote — the leader, then black flag his ass,” he said. “He doesn’t get the win, you know. If he’s on him from behind and moves him out of the way and there’s no wreck then fine he can win the race but if you’re up along side the guy and you dump him then I say black flag him and give the win the third-place driver.”

If he could have the last lap to do over, Busch said he wouldn’t change anything he did.

“I don’t have it back, so it doesn’t matter, it’s over with, it’s done,” Busch said. “I did everything I could do to try to win the race and I didn’t.”

As for Stewart, he was made aware of Busch’s comments Friday but contends he is sticking to the exchange the drivers shared Tuesday.

Meanwhile, several other Cup drivers were asked to address the last-lap incident in Daytona and whether or not they felt it should be a shared concern between NASCAR and the Cup teams.

Greg Biffle said restrictor plate racing is its own animal and that sometimes, NASCAR drivers need to be protected from themselves. Still, Biffle had no tangible solution.

“The thing is we’re crashing on the straightaway and the crashes are two cars. It’s not multiple cars. It’s not one guy cutting one guy off. It’s two cars involved in these wrecks at the end of these races and it’s the first- and second-place guy trying to get the trophy,” he said. “There’s no way to fix that, for sure.”

Bottom line, the safety of the drivers needs to be paramount, Biffle added. The fact that Busch was hit by more than one car crossing the finish line at the end of Saturday night’s race is a major concern and maybe cars aren’t getting slowed down quick enough or maybe they are still racing hard to the finish line.

“When you can see the checkered flag from here to there, it’s tough to just roll over and play dead, but at the same time, you don’t want to get turned around on the frontstretch in front of the whole field,” Biffle said.

Juan Montoya simplified matters and said drivers just need to be aware because restrictor plate racing is what it is.

“I’ve been to Daytona now six times and I think all of them have been like that, so I don’t know why all of a sudden it’s an issue,” Montoya said. “At Talladega there are always wrecks. At Daytona there are always wrecks. People pay to go and see that, I guess. And it’s fun; I don’t mind. It sucks when you’re in the middle of it but it is what it is, you know? It is restrictor plate at its best.

“There is always somebody going to walk out of there mad and ticked off that they should have or could have and when the caution came out why some people raced to the flag and some people didn’t. It is what it is. You’ve got to be aware. You’ve got to learn to ride a little and be lucky.”

JT to get a charge from the GREEN LANTERN?

Hey folks, Harry here… Got an unconfirmed rumor that at Leavesden Studios – there’s been some Warner Bros. screen testing on GREEN LANTERN and that Justin Timberlake was suiting up for the test. That does not mean that JT is going to be Hal Jordan, but just that he’s one of the guys that they’ve been seriously considering for the role of our Emerald Knight. At least that’s the latest from our source, Alphonse.

I know my general instant reaction to Pop Star casting is to curl in the corner shivering from the hives it gives me, but Justin has done some solid film work thus far – plus that sipping commercial where he gets dragged through all sorts of locales. It makes me giggle. What do you folks think of the possibility? Better or worse than Jack Black?
