PolitiFact | “Tea party” photo shows huge crowd — at different event
“Tea party” photo shows huge crowd — at different eventBy Catharine Richert
Published on Monday, September 14th, 2009 at 11:34 a.m.Bloggers, Saturday, September 12th, 2009.
Bloggers said this photo showed a gargantuan crowd at Saturday’s “tea party” protest. But this photo was taken years earlier, at a different event.
Over the weekend, conservatives enthusiastically passed around a photo they said showed a huge crowd protesting President Barack Obama’s policies during the “tea party” protest on Sept. 12, 2009.
With headlines that said the rally organized by the conservative group FreedomWorks drew as many as 2 million people, the photo showed a sea of protesters that stretched more than a mile from the Capitol to the Washington Monument. Conservative blog postings and Facebook updates said the media was unfairly reporting much smaller numbers.
The meme went viral on Twitter and pictures of huge crowds were posted widely on conservative blogs.
“I have no doubt that Washington Democrats are well aware of how many people turned out, even as their media outlets try to downplay the event,” said Power Line, a conservative blog that linked to the photograph from Say Anything, another conservative Web site.
“‘Media’ estimates range from 60,000 to 500,000 to around 2 million (yes, 2,000,000),” wrote John G. Winder for the conservative blog Cypress Times. “Those estimates, the language employed, and the visuals chosen for use in reporting the rally and representing the people gathered, vary greatly based solely on bias.”
In the mainstream media, crowd estimates varied.
The New York Times reported that “thousands” of protesters “filled the west lawn of the Capitol and spilled onto the National Mall,” while Fox News wrote that “tens of thousands” marched on Washington.
And from CNN: “The march leading to the Capitol stretched for blocks on the final day of the Tea Party Express’ cross-country bus tour, which began August 28 in Sacramento, Calif. En route, the group hosted rallies in about 30 cities. An official crowd estimate was not available, but reporters at the scene described the massive crowd as reaching the tens of thousands.”
We spoke with Pete Piringer, public affairs officer for the D.C. Fire and Emergency Department, who said that the local government no longer provides official crowd estimates because they can become politicized. That said, on the morning of Sept. 12, Piringer unofficially told one reporter that he thought between 60,000 and 75,000 people had shown up.
“It was in no way an official estimate,” he said.
We asked Piringer whether there were enough protesters to fill the National Mall, as depicted in the photograph.
“It was an impressive crowd,” he said. But after marching down Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capitol the crowd “only filled the Capitol grounds, maybe up to Third Street,” he said.
Yet the photo showed the crowd sprawling far beyond that to the Washington Monument, which is bordered by 15th and and 17th Streets.
There’s another big problem with the photograph: it doesn’t include the National Museum of the American Indian, a building located at the corner of Fourth St. and Independence Ave. that opened on Sept. 14, 2004. (Looking at the photograph, the building should be in the upper right hand corner of the National Mall, next to the Air and Space Museum.) That means the picture was taken before the museum opened exactly five years ago. So clearly the photo doesn’t show the “tea party” crowd from the Sept. 12 protest.
Also worth noting are the cranes in front of the Natural History Museum (the second building from the lower left of the National Mall). According to Randall Kremer, the museum’s Director of Public Affairs, “The last time cranes were in front was in the 1990s when the IMAX theater was being built.”
That makes the picture at least a decade old. (We’ll update this item if we find out when exactly it was taken.)
Now, the conservative bloggers who originally posted the picture have backed down.
Say Anything updated its original post to say that the picture was “of the wrong rally.” An accurate photo “clearly shows that [the rally] didn’t take place on the mall nearly as extensively as the image I mistakenly posted does.”
Power Line took the picture down all together. We decided to still rate it on the Truth-O-Meter because so many people saw the photo on Facebook or other sites over the weekend and probably were unaware it was not from the Saturday protest.
It may be a real photograph, but it does not depict the much smaller crowd that showed up for the protest. We rate it Pants on Fire!

[Press] Hospice to Host Comic Book Show

Hospice to Host Comic Book Show
West Orange, NJ – Superheroes For Hospice is hosting their 2nd Comic Book Show on Saturday, October 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Saint Barnabas Health Care System Corporate Building, located at 95 Old Short Hills Road, West Orange. All proceeds will support the patients and families of the Saint Barnabas Hospice and Palliative
Care Center (SBHPCC).
This project started in December 2008 by Volunteer Coordinator, Spiro Ballas. “I’m reliving my youth for a good cause,” says Ballas. SBHPCC relies heavily on donations and fundraising projects to bridge the gap between the cost of care and the insufficient reimbursement received from insurance companies.
Over 25,000 comic books have been donated to the project, some of which have been converted into over $800 for SBHPCC.
“It is a win/win situation for all involved,” thinks Ballas, explaining, “1st, comic book donors get a tax write-off for their
generosity—which can be more valuable than what they would get in today’s market if they tried selling them on Ebay—2nd, comic book fans will pick-up books at the show at a very strong discount, and, 3rd, hospice receives extra revenue to support their special kind of care.”
Comic books are still being collected for this and future shows. Area artists and writers are welcome to showcase their material at the show, as long as a percentage of sales at the show is donated to SBHPCC.
For more information about the show, or to make a comic book donation, please contact Spiro Ballas at SBallas@SBHCS.com or 973-322-4866.
Established in 1981, the Saint Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center, located at 95 Old Short Hills Road in West Orange, provides comprehensive care for patients with advanced illness, and their families, throughout ten counties in the State of New Jersey. The Saint Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center supports inpatient units at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, and Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, NJ, as well as Van Dyke Hospice at
Community Medical Center in Toms River. It also provides home care and services for individuals in long-term care and assisted living facilities.

The Ten Questions DC Entertainment Must Answer
Submitted by Rich Johnston on September 12, 2009 – 12:00 pm (22) comments
nelsonOkay, okay, as I said before, no one actually has to answer anything. Why would they? Diane Nelson doesn’t know I exist and it’s probably better that way. It just makes for a better headline. But if they were to answer, what would they say?
1. The Location Question. Will any of DC Comics operations be relocating to Warner Bros headquarters in Burbank, California any time soon? This move, closer to Warner Bros HQ has been speculated about a number of times, but Paul Levitz kept the company firmly on the East Coast. With the new Publisher likely to be a West Coaster, is everyone going to up sticks in the next few years? And will we see DC publishing and editorial move to other Warner East Coast offices?
2. The Jim Lee Question. Yes, what of Jim Lee? With his contract up and with Warner worried that he might leave, just what will they offer him to stay? Is there any possibility he may team up with the much-favoured-by-Warner Hank Kanalz at Wildstorm in some kind of dream team partnership within DC Entertainment? Or will Marvel Disney step up with the biggest offer in the world and bring him back to X-Men? And actually on that point… Hank Kanalz? What’s the story there?
3. The Comic Shop Question. What are DC Entertainment’s plans for serving the direct market? Will they maintain their leadership role with retailers? Are there to be any changes in general policy regarding the specialised comic shop outlet? Will DC continue to exclusively distribute comics through Diamond?
4. The Internet Controversy Question. Paul Levitz had tastes and concerns that, on occasion, saw certain items pulled back from publication. Could The Boys come back to DC now? Can Art Adams work on The Authority be restored now? Can Wildstorm put out the League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen Black Dossier vinyl record now and can Titan Book publish the graphic novel now? Will we see Lobo: The Hand To Hand Job published now? Will Vertigo publish The Sex Detectives Preacher spinoff now? What about Milligan and Morrison’s Bizarre Boys? And also can be have that Bendis Batman/Daredevil crossover now please? Pretty please?
5. The Film/Comic Relationship Question. Will the publishing division still have the ability to kill a potential film deal now, if its believed to harm the brand? This has happened before. Could it be allowed again?
6. The Dan DiDio Question. Is Dan DiDio back from Hawaii yet? Is there any reason he hasn’t been mentioned during all this restructuring? What’s his future with the company?
7. The Wildstorm Question. We’ve heard about exploiting the DC Universe characters, and Vertigo has been pinpointed for having a better look at, but what does this mean for the wide array of material in the WildStorm library? One WildCATS TV cartoon from years ago isn’t exactly deep cross-media penetration.
8. The Long Tail Question. On that point, will DC Entertainment continue to allow let lower income producing lines like Vertigo or Zuda continue, in anticipation of greater profits down the road?
9. The Harry Potter Question. Has Diane Nelson asked JK Rowling if she’d ever like to write a comic book?
10. The Ambush Bug #6 Question. Will we ever see Ambush Bug #6?
