Apologies to readers of Tales from the Longbox and the Weblog Updates

Posted by Chris Mosby on 7th October 2007

I woke up this morning and found that advertisements for adult webcomics had made their way on to my sidebar ads, and on the banner ad of the New Comic Weblog Updates Page.

I don’t know if anyone actually saw those ads, but they have been removed and I have taken step to hopefully make sure that this doesn’t happen again.

If anyone was offended, I apologize. That isn’t the kind of content I want to be represented here.

If anyone finds any of the other ads on this site offensive, please let me know and I will take steps to fix the problem.

    Thanks,
    Chris Mosby

Re: DreamHost Status » Blog Archive » More DNS Issues

Posted by Chris Mosby on 24th May 2007

    UPDATE– Thu May 24 10:42:09 PDT 2007

Things certainly seem better. We’re leaving this post as “unresolved” for now while we troubleshoot the outage but as of this moment, DNS resolution appears to be working fine.

    RESOLVED —
The problems regarding dns and our load balancer have been resolved. It was a combination of problems that caused the outage. The main problem was that the default udp settings on the load balancer did not have any timeout values set (BAD!!!). This was causing any udp connections that didn’t complete to fill up connection tables on the load balancer causing its CPU to spike and stop serving new requests. We sincerely apologize for this outage and are working on new plans that would prevent a similar outage in the future.

    More DNS Issues

Our DNS issues from earlier are back. The solution the load balancer vendor gave us worked for only a short time. We are working right now to find a solution until we can contact support again and resolve this for good. Until then reaching our network will have slower response times than normal.

    We apologize for the inconvenience.

    New forums!

Posted by Chris Mosby on 23rd May 2007

Well I installed PHBB 3 RC1 last night so we have new forums.

From what I have seen so far this new version has a lot of the features that we were wanting before, without me having to add mods to it. This includes forum watching (haven’t tested it yet), and more security features.

The old forums were getting swamped with spammers and the like, and the old version was very hard to manage.  I actually broke the old forums trying to add mods to add features like the above.

So anyway, I am still learning all the features, but check out the new forums here: http://www.talesfromthelongbox.com/forums2

Possible site downtime for the next few days

Posted by Chris Mosby on 19th April 2007

The site has been having some trouble with DNS issues lately and it seems it takes a long time for the main page to come up. I have contacted my web host, and they have agreed to move me over to a new server to help with the problem.

All in all it might take up to 72 hours for the new DNS settings to fully propagate. Thanks for your patience.

WordPress › Blog » WordPress 2.1.1 dangerous, Upgrade to 2.1.2

WordPress 2.1.1 dangerous, Upgrade to 2.1.2

    By Matt. Filed under Releases.

    Long
story short: If you downloaded WordPress 2.1.1 within the past 3-4
days, your files may include a security exploit that was added by a
cracker, and you should upgrade all of your files to 2.1.2 immediately.

Longer explanation: This morning we received a note to our security
mailing address about unusual and highly exploitable code in WordPress.
The issue was investigated, and it appeared that the 2.1.1 download had
been modified from its original code. We took the website down
    immediately to investigate what happened.

It was determined that a cracker had gained user-level access to one
of the servers that powers wordpress.org, and had used that access to
modify the download file. We have locked down that server for further
forensics, but at this time it appears that the 2.1.1 download was the
only thing touched by the attack. They modified two files in WP to
include code that would allow for remote PHP execution.

This is the kind of thing you pray never happens, but it did and now
we’re dealing with it as best we can. Although not all downloads of
2.1.1 were affected, we’re declaring the entire version dangerous and
have released a new version 2.1.2
that includes minor updates and entirely verified files. We are also
taking lots of measures to ensure something like this can’t happen
again, not the least of which is minutely external verification of the
download package so we’ll know immediately if something goes wrong for
    any reason.

Finally, we reset passwords for a number of users with SVN and other access, so you may need to reset your password on the forums before you can login again.

What You Can Do to Help

If your blog is running 2.1.1, please upgrade immediately and do a
full overwrite of your old files, especially those in wp-includes.
Check out your friends blogs and if any of them are running 2.1.1 drop
them a note and, if you can, pitch in and help them with the upgrade.

If you are a web host or network administrator, block access to
“theme.php” and “feed.php”, and any query string with “ix=” or “iz=” in
it. If you’re a customer at a web host, you may want to send them a
note to let them know about this release and the above information.

Thanks to Ryan, Barry, Donncha, Mark, Michael, and Dougal for
working through the night to figure out and address this problem, and
thanks to Ivan Fratric for reporting it in the first place.

    Questions and Answers

Because of the highly unusual nature of this event and release, we’ve set up an email address 21securityfaq@wordpress.org that you can email questions to, and we’ll be updating this entry with more information throughout the day.

    Is version 2.0 affected?

No downloads were altered except 2.1.1, so if you’ve downloaded any version of 2.0 you should be fine.

What if we update from SVN?

Nothing in the Subversion repository was touched, so if you upgrade
and maintain your blog via SVN there is no chance you downloaded the
    corrupted release file.
