Blue Beetle is just one of the many DCU characters being cast – or re-cast – in plastic by Mattel in 2010
With the 2010 New York Toy Fair kicking off with several collector showcases this weekend, action figure fans are ready for the flood of new images and information coming from all their favorite lines. No slouch in this particular department, Mattel came out swinging with several reveals sure to get comic and cartoon fans jazzed for the rest of 2010 as they continue to celebrate the 75th anniversary of DC Comics with all new packaging, as well as pins included with select figures for an added bonus. From the animated stylings of the popular Justice League Unlimited line to the modern Super Powers-inspired DC Universe Classic, fans of the DCU were well served.
Beyond that, Mattel showcased new waves of heroic figures that should strike a chord with toy fans of all stripes including new versions of their now mail-in specific Masters of the Universe line (including in-store crossover packs featuring both MOTU heroes and DC superheroes) and a revival of superhero toys inspired by the classic Mego dolls of the 1970s. Read on for a full rundown of the most powerful figures from the DCU from big names like Superboy and Darkseid to fan favorites like Blue Beetle and…Cyclotron?

First Marvel, Then DC, Now Library Binding…
Submitted by Rich Johnston on September 17, 2009 – 8:00 am (15) commentsbound-comics-examples_smA sad day for archivists of comics – the company Library Binding has been sold to a new owner.
And unlike other, more major comics industry changes recently, the new owners are saying that things will change. And that the company will not offer a binding process for comic books.
Over the last decade, Library Binding has offered affordable quality hardcover binding of people’s comics in a form often superior to the eventual collection of such comics by publishers for as little as $15 a book, as well as special publisher/title-specific embossed images, “comics book dies” for the cover and spine.
While they will complete any existing orders, Library Binding have told people they are not taking on any more. Alternative providers charge from $50 to $90 for a similar process and those hoping to bind their entire comics collection are tearing their hair out at the news. Especially those with half a collection bound, and the other half still unbound.
As an alternative, rival Capitol Bindery is looking at reducing its prices in return for increased orders from ex-Library Binding customers.

Fill Your Fingers – The ‘Free’ Lantern Ring Collection Set To Boost DC’s Sales
Submitted by Rich Johnston on August 19, 2009 – 2:15 am (7) commentsblack-lantern-ringExpect sales on Booster Gold #26, Doom Patrol #4, Adventure Comics #4, R.E.B.E.L.S. #10 and Outsiders #24 to rocket in the months to come. Seriously, each issue could top 100,000 orders or more and see DC dominate the charts with a number of titles that never normally getting the top fifty.
Why? Because sales on these comics, and on Justice League Of America #39 and Blackest Night #5, are tied in to the amount of Lantern Promotion Rings your local comic shop retailer is allowed to order.
The Black Lantern ring giveaway to kick off the Blackest Night event was an immense hit, with demand booming for these chunky stylish collectable black plastic fingerwear, and a call for similar rings to match the different Lantern colours seen in the series went out. And DC listened.
So for every 25 copies of Doom Patrol #4, Booster Gold #26, R.E.B.E.L.S. #10, Outsiders ‘24 and your retailer orders, they can order a bag of fifty Sinestro rings, Agent Orange rings, Indigo Tribe rings and Star Sapphire rings respectively.
And for every 50 copies of Justice League of America#39, Blackest Night #5 and Adventure Comics #4 sees you with a bag of fifty Red Lantern rings, Green Lantern rings and Blue Lantern rings, also respectively.
Each ring will ship every two weeks, Yellow on November 4th, Orange on November 18th, Red on December 2nd, Green on December 16th, Blue on December 30th (well, January 6th now I guess), Indigo on January 13th and Violet on January 27th.
Expect some kind of charge however. While the Black Lantern ring was very much a giveaway, in this case, not only do retailers have to pay more for the bags of rings, but they have to order large numbers of comic books, often ones that usually don’t sell too well, in order to qualify. Some retailers may pass that cost on, or ask you to buy the comic in question. Which will probably be a Blackest Night tie in anyway. So it’s not really a hardship…
Just don’t go in expecting some kind of Free Comic Ring Day. And expect some very odd looking chart statistics in the months to come. R.E.B.E.L.S. in the Top Ten? Could happen. People love these rings. Almost as if they were all Agent Orange operatives…

Comic Collector Live To Begin Charging A Software Subscription Fee
Well this will kill this app I bet. I tired it a while back and didn’t really like the interface, plus I already had too much invested in ComicBase (who look to be having issues with their website at the moment).

Comic Book Writers Without the Comics – Bookgasm: Reading Material to Get Excited About » Blog Archive » CAPES, COWLS & COSTUMES >>

Here is a very interesting article from Paul Kupperberg about comic book writers that have gone into writing novels.? Read the rest of the article at the link above.
CAPES, COWLS & COSTUMES >> Comic Book Writers Without the Comics
Author: Paul KupperbergBooks with no pictures in them? What would comic book writers know about those? More than you might think, at least in the last quarter century or so. Sure, there’s always been the occasional comic book writer who broke out of the funny book ghetto and made the move to writing prose (Mickey Spillane, William Woolfolk, Gardner Fox, Alvin Schwartz, to name a few), but for the most part, comic book writers stuck with the medium what brung ‘em. If they did write prose, it was likely to be a novelization or adaptation of some comic book or other media property.
These days, those boundaries have pretty much disappeared. Successful novelists such as Greg Rucka, Brad Meltzer and Jodi Picoult routinely make the switch between prose and comics. And comic book writers such as Neil Gaiman and Warren Ellis are doing work that gets them shelved in the literature section instead of graphic novels or science fiction. With the advent of respectability for the art form (THE NEW YORK TIMES says we’re art, so there!), comic book writers are finally being taken seriously as writers.

Book Review: The Last Days of Krypton by Kevin J. Anderson

Read 153 times.Hi all…
Wow. It’s been a long time since I’ve been drawn into a story where I already knew the ending, let alone a science fiction story straight from the comic book universe. Kevin J Anderson has written a compelling tale of the end of days on Krypton and the birth of a comic book legend… Kal-El, also known as Superman.
It’s strange reading or watching a story where you know what’s going to happen. We’ve seen the end of the planet Krypton on the big screen and in comic books over the years, but never to this kind of detail. I now feel like I know Superman’s parents — Jor-El and Lara — and some of his extended family, and how bits and pieces from Superman lore fit into his past. And I was sad when it all ended.
The Last Days of Krypton, Paperback CoverLike watching the Titanic sink in the movie, you knew it was coming. It wasn’t a secret. In this case, we knew Krypton was going to explode into a bazillion pieces killing nearly everyone. Kal-El was the sole survivor (well, sort of), sent in a small spaceship to earth to survive his destroyed world.
We knew of General Zod, Aethyr, and Namek, the three Kryptonian super-villains who tormented the Earth in Superman II. Clark gave up a normal, happy life to stop these foes from doing to Earth what they did to Krypton. But we never knew why they were really locked in the Phantom Zone all those years. They were criminals of the highest order, but how did they become those criminals?
All of these questions are answered in spectacular fashion by Anderson’s prose.
This should be required reading for all Superman fans. How else can you come to understand the underpinnings of all Kal-El stands for? Truth and justice? Yes, but why? Because he was raised by John and Martha Kent? Well, yes, but it goes back much farther than that to his biological father.
I am still amazed at how much of the DC Superman lore was worked into this book, and how seamlessly it all flows together. How did Krypton die? Read the book. You won’t be disappointed.
Learn amazing things like…
* Kal-El had an Aunt and Uncle! And a Grandmother and Grandfather!
* Lara (Kal-El’s Mother) was much more than just a pretty face in Superman The Movie!
* Aethyr and Namek actually had back stories!
* Jonn J’onzz (the Martian Manhunter) sent a signal from Mars actually received by Jor-El on Krypton!
* And much much more! The paperback version of the book that I read has a beautifully rendered lenticular cover with the Superman logo. It’s now on sale in bookstores everywhere and retails for $7.99.
Kevin J. Anderson, the author, has written and published more than 90 novels, and been nominated for several awards including the Nebula Award, the Bram Stoker Award, and teh SFX Reader’s Choice Award. He’s not only written several novels himself, but collaborated on a number of novel series, including Star Wars, the X-Files, and Dune. And he also writes comic books in his spare time.
Plus, it’s always nice to find a Colorado connection… He lives in Monument, Colorado, which is just north of Colorado Springs, Colorado where I live.
Check out his website at http://www.wordfire.com.
This is a great book and a “must read” for any true Superman fan!

Fix for ComicBase 12 install problem on Vista
Filed under: Comic Book Related Merchandise, In case you missed it, Tech Stuff
I just got my ComicBase 12 CD in the mail for my birthday and I was having trouble installing it on my Vista laptop.
Everything would go fine until I hit next to start the install right before (I would find out) is the accept the license agreement screen. The install would just error out and close. I looked in the Application Log and found this:
Log Name: Application Source: MsiInstaller Date: 1/11/2008 6:28:41 PM Event ID: 1033 Task Category: None Level: Information Keywords: Classic User: HANFORDMAN\Chris Computer: HanfordMan Description: Windows Installer installed the product. Product Name: ComicBase 12. Product Version: 12.0.3. Product Language: 1033. Installation success or error status: 1603.
After doing some research, I found that this is a common thing with Vista and has happened with other products.
With out getting to techinical, you can fix things by running this command at a command line:
regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\system32\vbscript.dll
After you do that, everything works fine.
