Review: Superman Returns (Spoiler Free!!)
Posted by Chris Mosby on 7th July 2006
I watched Superman Returns last weekend, and I have to tell you, I really enjoyed it. Brian Singer did a really good job with this movie.
The special effects were really good, even though some were pretty obvious that they were CGI effects at some points in the film. Even with that in mind, they were still well done and you can tell that a lot of thought went into them.
I also liked all the homages through out the film to the original film, and the comics, and they were tastefully done. It was really nice to see that, it made me realize that Singer really did want to respect what came before. This is something you don’t always see in movies based on comic book characters.
I was skeptical on how they were going to make the plot work by ignoring events that happened in the third and fourth movies (with Christopher Reeve), but they did a great job of it. They did it in such a way that people that have seen the first two films would pick up on little nuances that refer to those films, but not so much that someone that has never seen the original films would be totally lost.
As far as the actors go, Brandon Routh is absolutely perfect for the role of Clark Kent\Superman. Routh was just a good as choice for the role as Christopher Reeve was back in the ’70’s. In fact, there was more than scene where Routh reminded me of Reeve, it was kind of eerie. Great choice all around.
I have had great respect of Kevin Spacey as an actor for a long time. I can’t recall one movie of his that I didn’t enjoy his performance. As Luthor, he was really able to make the character as dark and dangerous as he needed to be. This was different than when Gene Hackman played Luthor, but I feel that they wrote that character a little lighter on purpose back then.
Kate Bosworth I felt, didn’t bring enough fire and intensity to Lois Lane as I thought should have been there. Whether that is because of her, or the way it was written I am not sure. Lois Lane, to me anyway, has always been like a force of nature when shown in the comics, and I felt that Bosworth didn’t show that in this film. This of course could have been because of the situation she was in, and the return of Superman after all those years.
Even though I liked the movie overall, I had a lot of problems with the plot. It was kind of confusing in some places, and there was not enough character development in spots, but maybe too much in others. Luthor’s “evil scheme” in the movie, seemed really silly to me. It just didn’t make sense to me, even when hatched by an evil criminal mastermind. I thought that could have been done a lot better in my opinion.
