SOURCE SPECIAL: GEOFF JOHNS TALKS THE FLASH, PART 1

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

By Alex Segura

He didn’t have to come back.

I’m not talking about Barry Allen – readers have seen his rebirth and will learn more about his role in the DCU and Central City with the launch of THE FLASH #1 in April.

No, I’m talking about superstar writer Geoff Johns, who will be pairing with superstar artist Francis Manapul to put the Flash through the ringer on a monthly basis.

But as most fans know, Geoff left his mark on the Flash character and his universe not that long ago. So what is it that brings him back to the world of the Scarlet Speedster and his dastardly Rogues gallery after such a definitive and classic run?

Well, short answer: There’s a lot of story to be told when it comes to the Flash. Especially when we’re talking about the newly returned Barry Allen: A lot of surprises, a lot of villains and a lot of high-speed, high-stakes action.

Long answer? Well, that’s something special. As most of you may have noticed, it’s been a pretty FLASH-heavy week here at The Source, but we’ve saved the best bit for last. We sat down with Geoff for a lengthy, two-part discussion about all things FLASH, where we talk Barry, the Rogues, the new series and just why the character remains as vital today as he was when he first burst out of that film reel in SHOWCASE #4.

So, sit back and enjoy part one, and swing back to The Source tomorrow morning for the conclusion.

THE FLASH

As announced late last night, Geoff Johns has been hired on as a producer on a feature film based on “The Flash.” The lengthy Hollywood Reporter article which revealed Johns’s involvement also details a reorganization of DC properties in development at Warner Bros and the involvement of writers Grant Morrison and Marv Wolfman in other projects. Johns has also worked up a new treatment for “The Flash.”

Release date: TBA

IRON MAN 2

Marvel Studios announced the film has wrapped principle photography on Saturday. “The next step for us is beginning the post production process which is extensive and filled with its own set of challenges,” said producer Kevin Feige. Meanwhile, Superhero Hype found an New York Post interview with actress Leslie Bibb from a month back where she mentioned her reporter character from the first film,

THE GREEN HORNET

Seth Rogen is confident in the film, according to Sci Fi Wire. “To me we haven’t had a Kato since April, and we’re looking [for a new Kato],” Rogen told reportes on Saturday. Despite this, he believes the film will deliver something new. “We’re not trying to make what they would probably consider to be a 100 percent safe version of a movie like this,” he said.

Starring Seth Rogen, release date: July 9, 2010

RED

That same Hollywood Reporter article on DC Comics film projects also notes the Warren Ellis miniseries has been optioned as a feature outside the Warner Bros. Gates. “In a rare example of a film project that has ventured off the Warners reservation, DC has set up ‘Red,’ a spy thriller to star Bruce Willis, at Summit,” states the article.

Release date: TBA

LOBO

Sci Fi Wire spoke with producer Joel Silver about the long gestating project. “”I think we can do it. We’ve got a script we like,” said Silver. Currently, Sci Fi Wire notes, the project is aiming at a PG-13 rating. “I think we’ve done it that way, but I love it. I’ve just wanted to make it for a long time, and I think it’s a great character, a great guy,” the producer explained.

Release date: TBA

[Press] DC brings back 80s icon Vibe following Flash:Rebirth

April 1, 2009 by Chris Mosby · 2 Comments
Filed under: Comic Book News

Someone PLEASE tell me this is a joke!

Responding to pre-release buzz on Flash: Rebirth, DC has already announced the
next character getting the Rebirth treatment: Vibe from the 1980s “Detroit-
era” Justice League.

Geoff Johns and Ethan van Sciver will pick up the project as soon as they’ve
finished Flash. Dan Didio explains the genesis of the project:

> It was really a melding of events. First of all, with Superman, Batman,
> Wonder Woman, Flash and Green Lantern all leaving the Justice League,
> Dwayne McDuffie wanted to try and bring back some of the feel of the
> Detroit-era League. And what character is most associated with that League?
> Vibe! Plus we had some very positive fan response to his appearances in
> Trinity. And orders for Flash: Rebirth have been phenomenal. We want to
> strike while the iron is hot, so I asked Ethan if he’d be interested, and
> he just jumped at the opportunity. Literally, he jumped. I could hear the
> thump on the other end of the phone.

The writer and artist explain some of their motivation in an extensive
interview.

>GJ: He’s one of DC’s great untapped characters. He was the first Justice
> Leaguer to be killed in the line of duty. He was only around for few years
> and didn’t really get a chance to explore his full potential.
>
>EVS: To me, he’s DC’s #1 under-utilized character.
