The Question #37 (DC Comics)

The Question (1987) - #37

I have really been enjoying the Blackest Night event in the main books, but the tie-ins like this are really starting to get old.  Luckily, with Blackest Night coming to an end soon, there won’t be too many more to get through. This issue is the last(?) of the “dead” titles that were “resurrected” for the Blackest Night event skip month, and I would have to say that I am glad.  While some of the “dead” titles that were brought back had good stories in them, it really is time to let the concept “rest in peace” once and for all.

Overall I like the story in this issue, but going in I felt like I had really missed the start of the book and was coming into it two thirds late.  I have never been very versed in The Question lore, so that is more than likely why.  I have only really followed the character since Renee Montoya took up the mantle in “52”.

O’Neil’s and Rucka’s talent as writers however, sill made this an interesting story; and they were able to shed some light as to who the old man is that has been helping Renee in the backup stories (yes, I said it) in Detective Comics.

I had a little trouble with the art, since I have never really been a fan of Bill Sienkiewicz’s style (even though he just inked it) and have always found it to be a little too rough for my taste.  With that aside, the art did have a gritty quality that seemed to fit the tone of the story even if I didn’t really didn’t care for it.

Fill Your Fingers – The ‘Free’ Lantern Ring Collection Set To Boost DC’s Sales
Submitted by Rich Johnston on August 19, 2009 – 2:15 am (7) comments

black-lantern-ringExpect sales on Booster Gold #26, Doom Patrol #4, Adventure Comics #4, R.E.B.E.L.S. #10 and Outsiders #24 to rocket in the months to come. Seriously, each issue could top 100,000 orders or more and see DC dominate the charts with a number of titles that never normally getting the top fifty.

Why? Because sales on these comics, and on Justice League Of America #39 and Blackest Night #5, are tied in to the amount of Lantern Promotion Rings your local comic shop retailer is allowed to order.

The Black Lantern ring giveaway to kick off the Blackest Night event was an immense hit, with demand booming for these chunky stylish collectable black plastic fingerwear, and a call for similar rings to match the different Lantern colours seen in the series went out. And DC listened.

So for every 25 copies of Doom Patrol #4, Booster Gold #26, R.E.B.E.L.S. #10, Outsiders ‘24 and your retailer orders, they can order a bag of fifty Sinestro rings, Agent Orange rings, Indigo Tribe rings and Star Sapphire rings respectively.

And for every 50 copies of Justice League of America#39, Blackest Night #5 and Adventure Comics #4 sees you with a bag of fifty Red Lantern rings, Green Lantern rings and Blue Lantern rings, also respectively.

Each ring will ship every two weeks, Yellow on November 4th, Orange on November 18th, Red on December 2nd, Green on December 16th, Blue on December 30th (well, January 6th now I guess), Indigo on January 13th and Violet on January 27th.

Expect some kind of charge however. While the Black Lantern ring was very much a giveaway, in this case, not only do retailers have to pay more for the bags of rings, but they have to order large numbers of comic books, often ones that usually don’t sell too well, in order to qualify. Some retailers may pass that cost on, or ask you to buy the comic in question. Which will probably be a Blackest Night tie in anyway. So it’s not really a hardship…

Just don’t go in expecting some kind of Free Comic Ring Day. And expect some very odd looking chart statistics in the months to come. R.E.B.E.L.S. in the Top Ten? Could happen. People love these rings. Almost as if they were all Agent Orange operatives…

THE FLASH

As announced late last night, Geoff Johns has been hired on as a producer on a feature film based on “The Flash.” The lengthy Hollywood Reporter article which revealed Johns’s involvement also details a reorganization of DC properties in development at Warner Bros and the involvement of writers Grant Morrison and Marv Wolfman in other projects. Johns has also worked up a new treatment for “The Flash.”

Release date: TBA

IRON MAN 2

Marvel Studios announced the film has wrapped principle photography on Saturday. “The next step for us is beginning the post production process which is extensive and filled with its own set of challenges,” said producer Kevin Feige. Meanwhile, Superhero Hype found an New York Post interview with actress Leslie Bibb from a month back where she mentioned her reporter character from the first film,

Directed by Jon Favreau, release date: May 7, 2010

THE GREEN HORNET

Seth Rogen is confident in the film, according to Sci Fi Wire. “To me we haven’t had a Kato since April, and we’re looking [for a new Kato],” Rogen told reportes on Saturday. Despite this, he believes the film will deliver something new. “We’re not trying to make what they would probably consider to be a 100 percent safe version of a movie like this,” he said.

Starring Seth Rogen, release date: July 9, 2010

RED

That same Hollywood Reporter article on DC Comics film projects also notes the Warren Ellis miniseries has been optioned as a feature outside the Warner Bros. Gates. “In a rare example of a film project that has ventured off the Warners reservation, DC has set up ‘Red,’ a spy thriller to star Bruce Willis, at Summit,” states the article.

Release date: TBA

LOBO

Sci Fi Wire spoke with producer Joel Silver about the long gestating project. “”I think we can do it. We’ve got a script we like,” said Silver. Currently, Sci Fi Wire notes, the project is aiming at a PG-13 rating. “I think we’ve done it that way, but I love it. I’ve just wanted to make it for a long time, and I think it’s a great character, a great guy,” the producer explained.

Release date: TBA

‘Green Lantern’ to shoot in Sydney

‘Green Lantern’ to shoot in Sydney
Warners, DC drawn to Oz by federal, state incentives

By Pip Bulbeck

April 16, 2009, 01:51 AM ET
SYDNEY — Warner Bros. and DC Comics’ next big-budget feature, “Green Lantern,” will be made at Fox Studios Australia in Sydney, New South Wales premier Nathan Rees said Thursday.

Director Martin Campbell (“Casino Royale”) will be at the helm of the comic book’s big-screen adaptation, working from a script by Greg Berlanti and Michael Green. Donald Deline will produce with a reported budget of $150 million.

Rees said the film would create about 500 jobs and include a “substantial investment” in digital effects work in Australia.

“Green Lantern” should be eligible to receive the Australian federal government’s 15% location rebate on top of the incentives supplied by the New South Wales government to bring the project to Fox. New South Wales outbid interstate rivals Victoria and Queensland for the work.

“The decision by Warner Bros. to locate the production in New South Wales is tangible evidence that having a competitive incentive scheme in place returns positive results,” Fox Studios Australia CEO Nancy Romano said.

The project is the latest film also to be attracted by the decline in the value of the Australian dollar.

“Green Lantern” is the third Warner Bros.-backed feature being made in New South Wales. “Happy Feet 2″ is in development there, and “Guardians of Ga’Hoole” is in production by Animal Logic.

Preproduction on “Green Lantern” is set to begin in July, and filming is scheduled to start in November. Warners is aiming to release the film in December 2010.

The Quick and the Read #9 – Final Crisis Edition

November 19, 2008 by Chris Mosby · 1 Comment
Filed under: Comic Book Reviews, The Quick and The Read

Its been a while since I have done one of these, I have just been busy working on the book.? I decided to take a break and clean my writing “pallet” and write some reviews focused around Final Crisis and its tie-ins.

Final Crisis #4 – Up until this issue, this series has been practically impossible to figure out what was going on.? I know I am not alone on this.? After reading this issue, I think I finally understand what is going on now.? I have to say that this has been the best issue of this series so far, with some good scenes (even if some where a little cliché) that are just the kind of thing that reminds me of why I love comics. Overall the whole series has been a big disappointment when compared to the hype that followed it.? So far I have enjoyed all the “tie-in” series\one-shots with the “Final Crisis” banner a lot more.? Hopefully this will get better by the end, but somehow I doubt it, considering the drama that seems to be going on behind the scenes on this book.

FC: Submit #1 – I liked this issue, and I think it was a mistake not to convey somehow that it takes place before Final Crisis #4.? I read Submit after that issue, not knowing any better, and it would have made my reading of Final Crisis #4 a lot more enjoyable.? Even though this was a good story, some of the dialogue seemed a little cheesy at times and I think Morrison made Black Lightning sound a little bit too preachy. The only other thing that kind of bugs me is the idea of the newspapers, and heroes running around delivering them.? Having someone like the Ray do that I can understand, he can travel pretty fast, but having BL running around on foot with Justifiers everywhere is just kind of silly.? A little bit of a plot hole if you asked me.

FC: Revelations #3 of 5 – I really have been enjoying Greg Rucka’s work on this series, and I think the art really fits the overall tone of the book perfectly.? I am glad to see more being done with the new Question, I enjoyed what Rucka did with the Crime Bible series and I was happy to see that story continued here.? It was also good to see a new character like Radiant be introduced last issue.? It makes more sense to have another entity like the Spectre around but be sort of his opposite number.? I am looking forward to the next issue of this and see how things turn out.

FC: Rouges’ Revenge #3 of 3 – What can I say?? Johns delivered an excellent end to another awesome story. I am so glad things ended the way they did (trying to stay spoiler free here), but I don’t see how they could have ended any other way.? Regular readers of my blog know I love John’s work, so no need to go on about it here.? I will however say I would like to see more of Scott Kolins work, I didn’t appreciate it enough until I saw it again in this title.? He has a very gritty style that fit perfectly for this book.? This was one of the Final Crisis tie-ins that was definitely worth every penny.

FC: Legion of 3 Worlds #2 of 5 – Holy shit, this is the greatest comic I have read in a while.? Which is pretty much a given for me considering its 1) Johns writing, 2) Perez doing the penciling, and 3) its about the Legion.? This is like Christmas and my birthday all rolled into one.? The obvious care and hard work that was put in this title just pours off the page.? I LOVE IT!!? I hate it when books are late, but if they need time on the next one, then so be it.? I am willing to wait for this kind of quality in this one case.

FC: Resist #1 – Here is another book I liked better than the series that it is tied to.? Rucka did a good job with this one, I really like the interaction with Mr. Terrific and the rest of the characters.? I have to admit I was beginning to wonder how the heroes were going to pull their asses out of the fire up until this issue, and I am actually looking forward to seeing one hell of a battle come out of this.

FC: Rage of the Red Lanterns #1 – Wow this comic is really something.? There is a lot of going on here, some of it might be lost on you if haven’t been reading the Secret Origins arc in Green Lantern, but it might not be too bad if you are picking this up cold.? Once again, Johns delevers a great Green Lantern story that I really enjoyed.? I am really looking forward to watching this play out in the GL titles, it should be a lot of fun.

Well that is it for now.? Next time I will either cover the New Krypton or Batman R.I.P. stuff I have read so far.
